Hi all Mac users
I have a small problem with a network that I was asked to look
at there is 6 end user machines and 1 server all connected via a switch
the problem is that when connected to the switch network transfers to
and from the server are very slow i.e. 100meg file take approx 18
minutes
Now I have swapped the cheap $100 switch out and replaced it with a
another one from the supplier still the same problem I then replaced the
switch with a hub and now everything flies along The Mac's are running
9.2 os and from what I can see without doing a network capture there is
speed and duplex conflict these settings cant be changed on this os.

So any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

I have worked on Cisco, Cabletron and Nortel switches and I had to come with
different solutions with.

I think the switch ports are set to Auto Neg. ON. Try port setting to 100
Half for G4s and 10 half for G3s and see what happens.

If you're talking about a $100 switch (like a NetGear or LinkSys) can you
even set any of the port parameters on that switch? No cheapy NetGear I've
seen allows you to do that.
If you hook up a Win2K/Linux/etc to this network do you have these same
problems?

2002-12-12 Thread Brian
I do not claim to be a mac master here, but unless these are stoneage
macs, shoudnt they be 10/100 nics? Most of the cheap switches are indeed
unmanaged, so all you can really do is plug stuff in and look at the leds
on the front to see if youre getting 10 or 100, as well as half or full
duplex. Tried lookin at mac model sites like
http://www.apple-history.com/index.html to see what features the models in
question have?
Tough to justify major expense given the office size, but going managed to
a say 2912 is an option??

If I recall correctly, G3 beige mini-towers and older hardware all came with
10MB NICs. Without checking Apple's online specs site, I don't know what
generation laptops started using 10/100 cards - somewhere in the G3
generation I'd guess. What PC hardware is running on this network?

RE: Mac network [7:58945]

2002-12-11 Thread Ted Marinich
Dwayne,

If you can check the network couters on your MAC - look for FCS error.
If you have any, then this is a classic duplex mismatch. Second thing you
can do is transfer a file to and from the workstation. I use FTP
and issue a get and then a put. Comparing the results will reveal a
mismatch as well if the transfers are considerably different.
It will also indicate which end is having the problem as well - send or
recieve. ;)

You might have to hard set the speed and duplex on the switch and Mac
stations if auto is not working for you.

Ted

What kind of server? If it's a Windows server, check out this terrific site
for cross-platform networks.

http://www.macwindows.com/

For your problem, check out the link in the list on the right regarding
cross-platform issues for Mac OS 9. It's labelled Mac OS 9 X-platform
issues. There are numerous issues with networking in Mac OS 9.2,
unfortunately

What evidence do you have that it's a duplex mismatch problem? What stats
can you get from the switch? And can you change the setting on the switch? I
guess it's a good guess considering that it works with a hub and not a
switch, but there are other possible explanations too...

There's the infamous problem of the switch nor forwarding traffic quick
enough (due to STP) upon startup, so the Mac misses the DHCP response and
perhaps AppleTalk replies too. But that would cause an immediate problem,
not a slowdown...

One thing you can do to fix networking problems on a Macintosh is delete the
Apple Share Prep, AppleTalk, File sharing, and TCP/IP files from the
Preferences folder. Reboot and let the Mac start over with fresh files. You
would need to reconfigure TCP/IP after doing this.

Sometimes it helps to zap parameter RAM (PRAM) also. PRAM stores various
preferences. You can use a tool called TechToolLite to do this.

Wish I could be more help. We haven't run into an duplex mismatch problems
on our network of Macs with OS 9.2 and switches.

Perhaps a search in Google would help?
