RE: boot rom upgrades

2000-11-30 Thread Ole Drews Jensen

Okay, find your pen and paper, here we go.

You can get the Boot ROM's free, but you will have to pay the shipping cost
with a creditcard.

I am located in USA, so I am not sure how it works elsewhere.

Call Cisco on 1-800-553-6387 and choose option 3.
Tell them you wish to get a set of Boot ROM's for your unit.
The product number for a set for the 2500 is BOOT-2500=

You can also buy FLASH and DRAM SIMM's here, but I would suggest to get
those somewhere else. If you don't know where to look, read some of all the
replies I got on my e-mail (subject: DRAM and Boot ROM's)

I've asked this before with no reply, except that I've heard someone say
that Cisco give Boot Roms away for shipping costs.
I'm gonna turn up on Cisco's doorstep and save shipping. Anybody know where
he lives?

Sorry, replying to this just to try and keep the question alive. Can't find
info on Cisco web site either. Anybody got the info to hand?

Cheers,

Gaz

Some older rom's could not see all manufacturers. You may be able to fix
 this with a bootrom upgrade.

It could also just be an unsupported chip.

RE: boot rom upgrades

2000-11-30 Thread Jon McCoy
Title: RE: boot rom upgrades

The other thing to buy will be a PLCC extractor, to get the boot roms out of their little homes. You could probably use two small screwdrivers, but if you're as talented as me, you'll break stuff getting them out (they're in there pretty solidly). They are the two little dime-sized square chips, deeply embedded in their sockets on the 2500 mainboard.

My local Radio Shack had the tool in stock for $10, even though it wasn't a cellular phone or a remote-control monster truck. You can also buy one online from them at

http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=CTLG%5Fname=CTLG%5F005%5F005%5F020%5F000%5Fid=276%2D2101 or, since that's an ugly url, search for part number 276-2101 at www.radioshack.com. I assume folks outside North America can find their own channel for obtaining this tool.

The new Rom's will come in a package with an anti-static wrist strap (highly recommended) and directions with nice pictures to follow. It's pretty simple to do, except you will exert far more force to get the chips out, than feels comfortable.

If anyone in the Seattle area needs help, or wants to borrow the tool, lemme know.

Hi,

you would need to go to your Cisco supplier and order them. The cost I don't know.
Out here we would be different.
