2000-09-13 Thread NHK

Good day,

Just a quick question. What would you propose to customer which demand for
the following criteria.

a) 4 to 8 port asyn dial-in access router (thinking of 2509RJ, 2511 or
Shiva)
b) Call back features
c) Authentication (such as individual user are granted with a token)

Objective:
a) Access to AS/400
b) Check mail
c) In-house application (all via tcp/ip)

Thanks!
Ryan

Radius or Tacacs

2000-11-08 Thread Parris, Brian

Could somebody please explain to me why I would want a Radius Server when
authenticating a VPN client through my PIX on an NT Server network rather
than just authenticating locally on the PIX.

Also, what is the advantage of Tacacs and is there any software that can
perform these duties for less than the $4000 that the Steel-Belted Radius
and CiscoSecure ACS software cost. I'm not going to have but a few users
and can't justify these prices.

TIA,

If anyone is interested there is a TACACS server that will run on NT,95,98. There is a
30 day eval available. I downloaded it earlier today and have set up basic
authetication
to a router in the office.

When your dealing with dozen, hundreds, thousands of users, local
authentication doesn't scale. If you have a few users, no big
deal. Personally I like getting "user" level configs out of the IOS and
into a centralized server.

TACACS is cool because it can account for people going to your routers and
executing commands, going to enable, etc.

You can also get a lot more information on their connection logs if you're
using RADIUS.

There are several RADIUS vendors out there that sell for less than
$1500.00 - I can't tell you who though off the top of my head but I think I
saw one several weeks ago..

[Re: Radius or Tacacs]

2000-11-08 Thread Faisal Athar

Hi,

Actually you could use PIX to authenticate your VPN users on windows/NT
network but WHAT if you want to do accounting for users??

The RADIUS/TACACS uses AAA model mean authentication/authorization and
accounting..

SO if you wanna know how much time your users are accesing the network you
need to use RADIUS or TACACS for accounting.SO you can capture these
accounting packets in any software to find .

The RADIUs Vendor I have in mind is LIVINGSTON..I think its more cheaper then
your requirements!!
TACACS is Cisco proprietary AAA protocol server..and can be used only with
CISCO products where RADIUS is applicable for most of the Vendor devices.

Hope It solved your confusion.

Faisal Athar.

Re: Radius or Tacacs

2000-11-09 Thread Rodgers Moore

Brian,

How do you propose to configure the user id & password into the PIX?
There's no command to allow this. So you won't be doing any authentication,
except the pre-shared key which is the same for everyone. One password
between your LAN and the Internet. Feel safe?

You could install Radius for NT, it comes on the Option Pack 4 CD and is
free. It won't work without the radius/IIS service pack 6 and some other
upgrade (I forget the name). Just be forwarned, with this software you get
"exactly" what you pay for.

In the ISP industry for user accounting/authentication RADIUS wins hands
down. I have no idea in corporate though. Alot of times people will use
TACTACS to do accounting of people logging in and configuring the routers
themselves.

Keep in mind, plain TACACS will not do accounting- only TACACA+ will..
