To get around this I totally removed Ciscoworks and all the modules and

I tried to upgrade Ciscoworks 2000 cd one from 4th edition to 5th edition,
I
experienced a lot of problem. Also, I prefer to have fresh install rather
than upgrade. You can backup your database and restore it back after your
 Ciscoworks2000 is newly installed.

It is absolutely necessary to get a support contract for this software.
You will probably be making at least two or three calls to TAC to get
this working correctly. Save yourself a LOT of trouble by getting
software support as soon as possible. If you can successfully get this
running without a single call to TAC, I salute you. :-)

I agree with John. The best advice I know to give you would be to put as
much memory in the CW2000 station as possible and when accessing the console
from the CW2000 station itself, use the IP address of the station in the URL
instead of http://127.0.0.1 or http://localhost. Doing those two things
resolved most of my issues.

2002-01-29 Thread John Kaberna

Cisco Works for Windows is basically Whats Up Gold with Cisco View. It's
pretty much a waste of money if you ask me. It's not very reliable and your
Log viewer refreshes periodically erasing your entire screen for a couple of
seconds. There is no way to highlight an event so you can see which events
come in are new. It's a little hard to explain, but it's very annoying and
hard to manage. It's nothing like HP Openview. I only use it on my laptop
so I can quickly setup Syslog and SNMP traps at customers sites. I would
never recommend it to use on a regular basis.

I don't believe there is an eval copy, but your local reseller should be
able to hook you up with a demo at their office. But, if you want to see
99% of what it will do, download an eval copy of What's Up Gold from
www.ipswitch.com Getting a copy of CiscoWorks for Solaris is not possible
unless your organization does a LARGE amount of business with Cisco or if
your reseller does you a favor.

No for that purpose it doesn't matter if you disable console or buffer
logging, in my opinion.
Do you see the messages in the file the syslogd on the server is writing
into?
(cat syslog.file | grep name_of_the_device_you_are_looking_for)
if yes, check for filters in the CW syslog analysis setup.
if no, could be anything, do you have routing etc. ok?
firewall, access-lists ...
good luck georg

First, it uses SNMP. You can greatly simplify and say it's a GUI that helps
you use SNMP to manage your CISCO stuff.
Second, you have to read the manual (no shortcut here, sorry!). You have to
start by installing CD One, which is the main server component. Then you
can add different modules for various platforms, if you purchased them. Pay
attention to the hardware/software requirements for each module. You will
find detailed description of each step along the way in each module's
manual. Then you can use your browser to connect to the server.

add these ip addresses to Ciscoworks for discovery

Where do I insert in the Ciscoworks ?

 and also
setup syslog statements on each router/switch.

Which statements ?
On our router we have following statements:
logging trap debugging
logging facility local2
logging 192.168.X.Y (it is a syslogserver, but not the ciscoworks-server)

Thanks for your help.

 Thanks

First, it uses SNMP. You can greatly simplify and say it's a GUI that helps
you use SNMP to manage your CISCO stuff.
Second, you have to read the manual (no shortcut here, sorry!). You have to
start by installing CD One, which is the main server component. Then you
can add different modules for various platforms, if you purchased them. Pay
attention to the hardware/software requirements for each module. You will
find detailed description of each step along the way in each module's
manual. Then you can use your browser to connect to the server.

 Hi all,

I bought the CISCO Works 2000 and I want to monitoring my network
 environment
 with it.
But I have a lot of problems to understand how it works.

Do you have a short documentation or a cookbook which give me a fast
 results.

 Best regards, Holger.

Dude- Good Luck !!! The global class was canceled here in the DC area, so I
bought two course books off of Ebay ($400 each, but awesome books). I
havean NT copy of CW2000 Campus Manager running on my PC (WIN 2K Server/
512 RAM/ Gig processor), and it's still a tad sluggish. I'm slowly getting
my lab routers switches installed in the database. I bought a
Cisco/NetScout probe to run in Traffic Manager just picked up a CWSI
bundle off of Ebay, so I now have a lot of the official install notes. The
CCO is available, but you really need to have a specific question when
digging through all the information. There are no Cisco Press books, not
much of a support base if you are learning CiscoWorks solo. I can share
some advice what to
avoid, that's about it. I would estimate It will have cost me almost $1,500
for all the gathered material to study from (including the probe), but I
work for a small network design company I'll recoupe the investment back
fairly quickly (kinda makes the pursuit a little fun).

All the best !!!

Should be able to get through it while CWSI 2000 modules install.

Sorry I can't offer more than childish humour, but accurate from my

cw2k on nt
i ran it on a p3, 500mb ram, 12gig ide, and it was slugish.
from talking to others and implementing it at different sites
my experience is to not to get anything less than:

dual processor p4 or p3 with
1 gig ram
2 4+gig ultra-wide scsi-2 hdds

cw2k on solaris
this is a better solution, more stable but requires people
who know solaris.

Enterprise Ultra 10s (lower power for cw2k)
Enterprise 220r (high end for cw2k)

pain:
patches when you are installing solaris

remember a lot of people buy enterprise packages to manage
their network, but never really use it. it takes resources to run
cw2k, it will not do your job for you ;-) "just a disclaimer"

Cisco works uses the same packets as CDP, so the ciscoworks station must be able to
send CDP like packets to the switches, if you able to do so, then you are set.
