I don4t think OSPF v.1 ever went into production.
More like a pure authentication issue.

Could one be ospf v. 1?

Or could one be doing PT auth and the other MD5?

It could be one of a few things:
Mismatched area ID,Bad checksum,OSPF not enabled on the receiving
interface,Bad version,Invalid type,Bad link-state update advertisement
count,Bad link-state update length .
