It's been some time ago but last time I went to the web and used one of the
comparison calculators for Austin and Dallas I could take a 25% pay cut to
live at same standards in Dallas. Austin is historically an overeducated,
underpaid economy. Austin promotes the hill country to our west to keep real
estate costs high and there are too many colleges and graduating students
that tend to stay in the area driving the wages down. Add to that the fact
that the IT industry is stale here and not many jobs available.

Austin sounds a lot like Madison, Wisconsin. We're moving back to that

in Madison now? Is there much demand for CCNPs and CCIEs?)

2002-07-11 Thread Jeff Harris

It's funny you should mention Madison... While I'm originally from D/FW (and
looking at Austin) I currently live in Appleton, Wisconsin and was looking
at the Madison area for jobs. I didn't find one single recruiter that would
call me back. NOT ONE. I must have sent out well over 30 resumes. I'm CCNP
certified with 7 years of experience. You would think that I would have got
one phone call/email.

I don't know what is up with the Madison area. Madison was my wifes first
school choice (and she actually got in) but damned if I didn't find any kind
of a job that would support us.

I finally got some response from a few Dallas companies so I am headed back
in that direction for now. Just looking at to the Austin area for the future
(as long as she needs to be in school. After the baby. )

Geez. It's a small world. :)

I live south of Milwaukee and have been looking for a network engineering
position anywhere in WI for about 6 months and Jeff is right. I am CCNP /
CCDP certified and have 9 years experience and the recruiters can't seem to
manage a callback. The few direct hire positions I have seen are all for
NT/mail/SQL admin jobs with a few routers on the side.

Things are thin all over it seems.

Madison is not a high tech area so don't count on getting a routing only
job. There is about a dozen companies that need a full time engineer and
once those jobs are landed they tend to stick. I too am a CCNP/CCDP and have
a couple of leads, but it's thin here too. I was stationed outside Austin
and its a great place and true to the word, a lot like Madison.

Thats why I left austin in 2000...the job market is not good,
and the pay is worse. However its a nice town, and as previously mentioned
its a university town with more labor than work, which drives the cost down.
There weren't many jobs for ccnp types when I left, and I suppose there are
none now..

Well, did you contact the hiring manager? I'd guess that the base salary is
51-75K but the description says high commissions so depending on the
company and it's presence/consistent sales history, that may be a good
opportunity - if you like sales.
