Re: Router IOS Upgrade bug in 12.1 images [7:52489]
Ran into this one again on a router I recently purchased. In searching the archives for the methodology, I realized I had not documented the procedure anyplace last time I ran into this last September of so. The bug: with versions of IOS 12.0, upgrade is impossible. Copy TFTP flash fails The fix: 1) boot to rommon this is done using the password recovery process - hit control-break key a few times during the 1st 30 seconds of the boot process 2) this places you into the prompt 3) enter the command 0x2101 ( not 0x2142, as is done during the normal password recover process ) 4) reload. this gets you to a Router(boot) prompt 5) erase the flash 6) now the copy tftp flash command works. ( maybe you can skip step 5 ) 7) when done, enter config mode, and enter the command config-reg 0x2102 8) reload the router 9) life is good. 10) curse Cisco under your breath, but not too loudly, not in public, particularly when your lab date is close HTH Chuck -- TANSTAAFL there ain't no such thing as a free lunch Chuck's Long Road wrote in message news:[EMAIL PROTECTED] painful process. I'm more concerned that a technique that I've used successfully many times on these routers suddenly stops working. This is a by the book technique that I haven't had problems with before, and is supposed to work. Given that I have better things to do ( going to the config(boot) mode and working through is pretty time consuming ) The fact that neither RSL or the manual process works correctly tells me this might have more serious ramifications So thanks for the suggestions. this one does work. Re: Router IOS Upgrade bug in 12.1 images [7:52489]
Speaking about upgrade bugs, I've found upgrade bug in 12.2. Here is what is happening, and how to overcome it. Hardware: - 2600 with 8 MB flash, 12.2(8)T1 telco IOS loaded. Problem: There is 8MB flash, and I want to load 12.2(8)T2. show flash shows that flash is 8MB. Do erase flash to remove existing image from flash. Now show flash shows that there is 7.8MB free in flash, and 12.2(8)T2 cannot be loaded (copy tftp flash says that there is no enough space). squeeze doesn't help. Solution: - Load older IOS that fits into 7.8 MB, for example 12.0(7)T, reload router, erase flash (now it will have 8 MB free), and then load 12.2(8)T2. Re: Router IOS Upgrade bug in 12.1 images [7:52489]
This is not actually a bug. Starting with 12.2(1) IOS, the 2600 and 3600 platforms support the squeeze command. To get it to work, you have to reformat the flash using a 12.2 image, which creates a log file used in the squeeze process. That log is a few hundred K in size, and hidden. The listed flash requirements for 12.2(8)Tx images is 16MB, and this is part of the reason why ... even though technically it can fit in an 8MB flash. It's also listed that way because future versions are not going to fit in 8MB, even formatted with old flash. Interesting. Anyway, for practicing MPLS, 12.2(8)T5 telco feature set still can run on 2600 with 8MB flash and 16 MB DRAM :) Sasa Shawn Heisey wrote: This is not actually a bug. Hi Marc, this is likely to be IOS bug CSCdv65027/CSCds28168. Description: The command-line interface (CLI) does not prompt for the erase keyword when the copy [/erase] source-url destination-url EXEC command is entered. This behaviour does not allow a file system to be erased using the copy [/erase] source-url destination-url EXEC command. Resolved: Router IOS Upgrade bug in 12.1 images [7:52489]
yes indeed this is a bug. corrected in versions later, although it worked in a previous IOS version that was on my routers that supposedly contained this particular bug, so I question the accuracy of CCO in this regard. The resolution: 1) set the config register to 0x2101 and reload so that the system comes up in boot mode ( config-register 0x2101 ) Router_3(boot)# the copy tftp flash command works as it should from this mode 2) after successful copy, change the config register back to 0x2102 and reload. 3) life is good. during the course of this I discovered a number of interesting things, that might become the topic of a homily, one of these days. I have had the same porblems here - definately IOS related. All though I have to manually erase the flash first, it works fine on the routers where the flash is stored in DRAM - haven't ried it on a 2500. This is fixed is ver 12.2 IOS. Router IOS Upgrade bug in 12.1 images [7:52489]
I've done this before, and it's not like it's real tough, but. I am trying to upgrade my IOS images. Neither the Router Software Loader, not the good old copy tftp: flash: is working. RSL gives me some odd message the copy function never asks if I want to erase the current image on the flash - it just starts to copy, then stops, with a message that there is not enough rook on the destination device. sample output of my process: Router_7#copy tftp flash: NOTICE Flash load helper v1.0 This process will accept the copy options and then terminate the current system image to use the ROM based image for the copy. Routing functionality will not be available during that time. If you are logged in via telnet, this connection will terminate. Users with console access can see the results of the copy operation. Have you tried BOOT SYSTEM TFTP and then manually deleting the file? I had an old 2501 I had to do that on that had a 10.x image on it. Did you try booting directly to rommon and erasing the flash manually first? Re: Router IOS Upgrade bug in 12.1 images [7:52489]
painful process. But I think I'll make Cisco take some responsibility here. Folks will be back to work Tuesday and I'll get the inform I need to pursue this ticket.
