OT: config management software

2000-11-29 Thread Yip Chan Keong

Hi,

is anyone aware if there are any software that allows management of
configuration of network devices. i am looking for a software that is
capable of managing the configuration of eqpt including makes by cisco,
fore/marconi, cabletron etc. the software shld allow the configs to be
edited on a user interface, version managed, uploaded to the device via
tftp and stored on an ldap server preferably (seems too much) (don't tell
me cisco configmaker or CWSI). in the worst case which there aren't any,
we'll have to write one ourselves...

thanks in advance. best regards,
/yck

RCS? CVS? SourceSafe? Combined with iPlanet/Netscape
Directory server, Microsoft Active Directory, or OpenLDAP?

Maybe...

If you are going to write it by yourself, use C or C++ under Solaris or
FreeBSD, that way you are guaranteed happiness and scalability.

You should write a routine to get MD5 checksums on all of them, as
well ;>

Then again...

The only software you can buy that comes close to what you are trying
to do is probably Aprisma (formerly Cabletron) Spectrum 6.0.

But...

For true integration and vendor support, my suggestion is to use all
of the point products individually (get latest versions of CW2k/RME,
Spectrum, Marconi NMS solutions) and then integrate them via an
Element Management System (e.g. Cisco uses CEMF) that applies
W3C's XML and OMG's CORBA technologies to integrate NMS,
OSS, and BSS solutions. This is quickly becoming industry standard.

Thanks, my concern with developing in house is scalability...and the time
taken to develop the solution. i have monitoring products running for
systems and networks, but seems like there is no 'gel' to glue them
together. can Netcool or Concord be considered an element management
system? None of them can cover the entire spectrum of services needed for
an OSS, e.g. management config, IP, security, patch etc.
