in answer to your question ..there really isnt one...

the 3100 does layer 2 and 3 switching but doesn`t have a REAL ios ...so no
good...

then you have a choice of
2948-LG3
3550-T12
4908-LG3

ALL of these are expensive ...i was quoted 6K(US) 4.5k (UK) for the
29.the rest i don`t want to hazard a guess

anyone else???

New on the scene is the Catalyst 3550 series. 10 10/100/1000 TX
Autosensing ports and 2 GBIC ports. It does talk at Layer 3, as well.
Seems like a nice unit.

Re: low-end layer3 Catalyst [7:7093]

2001-06-05 Thread andyh

get an old 2900 (non-XL) and a 261X (or other FeE ISL/dot1q aware router) -
be aware of the differences between this and "real" MLS and you're 95% of
the way there. Worked for me.

2900s are prolly under $1000 now (bought one in the UK a couple of years
back for #1,250) - and you can resell them on this list oe ebay for cost

anyone care to speculate when the CatOS will be retired from the cets and
the "native" mode will take over? Anyone more than maybe a year off the big
certs, caveat emptor when you buy that Cat5 for your home lab.

Our Cisco Engineer said the "set" based Cat IOS was slotted to phase out
over the next 18 months (this was 6 months ago). Of course, a few months
later I took the new Switching exam & you by the questions you would'a thunk
the IOS based models were being phased out :o)

Re: low-end layer3 Catalyst [7:7093]

2001-06-05 Thread andyh

I really believe that the CatOS is pretty much done with as far as
development is concerned within Cisco. They're keeping up with the current
stuff for the time being whist the "native" mode stuff catches up - there's
PFC and other things that aren't quite there yet in the IOS-based Cats yet,
but expect to see EOL for CatOS at lot sooner than you'd think.

Not good news for home-labs, but seriously - if you know the theory
backwards and you go in a new place, maybe having blagged (UK for having
*maybe* extended your CV (resume) past the truth a bit) it a *little*, then
not really a problem.

unless you're contractor of course - in which case no problem at all - get
in work late and know nothing, par for the course - just hope your empolyer
enjoys his freebie luch
