I only caught the last half but it was essentially Spark as a voice and video
call control platform integrated with all the other standard Spark features,
either as a standalone platform or in a hybrid configuration with on-prem
infrastructure via Expressway connectors, all accessed through a unified
client. Endpoints can register directly via QR code, you can move calls
seamlessly between Spark enabled endpoints and across on-prem and hosted
infrastructure, ability to use cloud based call term and origination or hybrid
model with on-prem T, native 25 way multi-party video, self-admin portal,
etc. To be sold through the partner channel. The Cisco answer to Skype for
Business, Broadsoft’s UC-One portfolio, etc.

Training materials should be coming out Q1CY2016 to coincide with NA roll-out,
ROW to follow. Additionally, I think the keynote video will be published today
at some point.

I liked it, a lot actually, but I come from a hosted/managed background so my
perspective may be a little different.

2015-12-09 Thread Heim, Dennis
Since I have been doing this for 10+ years, it seems that all the complex
telephony features become less and less important. It seems that a single line
per user is “good enough.” Lync has been pushing a good enough mantra for some
time. I think for most users the call coverage of ring my phone, and other
devices then go to voicemail.

Key point is traditional. Cisco has said on more than one occasion (officially
or unofficially) that feature parity with the pbx is no longer their focus. I
twitch a little less each time someone mentions forwarding non-primary lines
(sorry Ed and Scott, you'll need to find new entertainment) as time goes on.

Just a cell phone companies have trained us into thinking cell coverage and
clarity is "good enough", we'll find that with features going forward.

It certainly seems like they've put a lot of thought into it this time around.
Very little had me scratching my head saying why.

Well, except for the fact that I couldn't watch on my iPad! Ugh! Apple this.
Apple that. Mobile device this. Mobile device that. Look what we can do.

The price point was interesting as well.

Spot on Dennis.

Next thing to kill off is voicemail. :) would rather have a call just be
transcribed to email, a IM, or sparked instead of a wav file left. I know
speech view can do the transcription.

2015-12-08 Thread Ryan Huff
It definitely has a wow factor and looks pretty cool. I like the ease of
deployment approach for the phones; the QR code is definitely a nice touch.

I don't see it eclipsing on-premise anytime soon, even with continued
development of call features and the addition of contact center.

It would definitely put more importance on reliable and redundant internet
connections though!
