Hi Jeanie, welcome back.

Yes Jeanie, GOD has given you these past nine years, as he has also given
me the past twenty three years, but GOD helps those that help themselves.
It is also you that helps you have these past nine years, and your going to
help yourself have many more.

Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year.

You end with the word Blessings I end with those two numbers 18

Syndrome was developed because of blood transfusions for heart and my
Gleevec. The kidney diease is from to much statins (I was on 80 mg daily

Unless you have a problem with one or more of the ingredients like sodium
or potassium I'd say throw in a Gatorade if you get above the 8 glasses a
day level. And of course - talk to your doctor!

And everyone should know the signs of dehydration -

It can happen even in the hospital. Maybe I can detail what we went through

[CMLHope] Depression

2012-12-19 Thread Marty Gartenberg
When someone has CML or any other type of cancer, then they also have a
certain amount of depression as well. Some more then others but it is just
an emotion that we as humans all share when we are ill. It doesn't
necessarily have to be from the Gleevec or any other type of TKI's, but the
fact that we have cancer.

I don't take any TKI's because I had a bone marrow transplant about 23
years ago this coming May. In all of this time I have learned there are
several kinds of emotions that we go through when we have cancer. The first
is disbelief, then we go through, let me get another opinion because this
can't be happening to me.

Most, but not all go through, why is GOD punising me. Then some sort of
acceptance, but hope that they will get up the next morning and find that
it was all a big mistake. Then finally once they realize that they in fact
do have cancer, they go into a depression.

Now this may not necessarily happen in this order, but for the most part,
all or most of these emotions are just our way of trying to deal with this.
Your mind is a powerful tool and the way you use it can make a big
difference.

I always say that your mind can try to help your body. I'm not saying that
having a good outlook on life will be able to cure you of this or any other
disease but your mind can work in ways that can help you. If you are
depressed most of the time your body will react as if your disease is just
eating away at you. If your attitude is such that you feel good about
yourself in spite of what you may be going through then you will become
less depressed, and maybe not even feeling any depression at all.

Believe me I know all about this, When I had my bone marrow transplant I
had to live in a six by nine plastic bubble in a hospital for just about
seven months. However, I learned to control my depression and you can't
imagin how much my mind helped my body heal in all of that time.

Depression can really hurt you if you let it, while having less can
actually help you. It has to deal with some hormones that are produced in
your brain. One being Endorphine. If you know anything about marathon races
when the runners are finished with their run they actually feel a natural
high.

This is because of the production of Endorphines in their brain. I knew the
president of a group in New York City called the Road Runners. His name was
Fred Lebow and he developed brain cancer. It was a very agressive cancer
with a longevity of only a few months at best.

Every time Fred received a radiation treatment he would go up to the roof
of the hospital and run around it. Fred lived for about seven years, and
when he died they found that all of his brain tumors were not even there
anymore. They said that he died of all the radiation treatments. It is a
sad story but it did show how someones attitude, and in Fred's case how he
was able to sustain himself for so long.

Everyone may be different but cancer doesn't care who you are, so in that
sense we are all the same.

I always end any of my posts with two numbers 18. I'm sure that you have
already seen me do this. These two numbers symbolize life.

18's

Marty

2012-12-19 Thread C.M. Houtz
Hi Marty, I just read your message and am smiling as you are so right. I have
had times of depression, especially lately, but manage to laugh, smile, and get
on with things. Right now I'm under home care from the local hospital as
something happened to my left leg and I was in such pain and unable to move my
leg. My son called the ambulance, and to make a long story short, I'm
homebound right now. The leg seems to be better, but they still can't tell me
what caused it to happen. I tend to believe it was a pinched nerve. That's as
good as any of their thoughts. I missed all of my Christmas Parties with
friends, and that was depressing, but I got over it. I saw my Onc. yesterday
and was allowed to go to his office for that. My feet are so swollen that I
could barely get a sneaker on to go. I had my husband drive me, but on the
way, saw he was having difficulty seeing. It was late afternoon and getting
dark. He can't see to drive at night, so I told him that I'd drive home, and,
even with these feet was able to do that for him.

I do try to look at all of the good things in my life, and that isn't always
easy, but..some how I manage to do that. The oncologist says that the
increase in my Prednisone probably caused the swelling and I should take more
water pills. My nurse tells me that I'm slightly dehydrated and need to drink
more, so it's a laughable situation and at the moment don't know whether to
increase the water pills or not. I guess this is why they call it the practice
of medicine as they're all practicing.including me!!

You have such a wonderful attitude, and it is contagious. I'm busy working on
my quilts and doing what I can to keep my brain busy. Everything else will
take care of itself...with a little help. You take care, my friend. Life is
full of challenges, and this is just another that I have to win.

Re: [CMLHope] Depression

2012-12-19 Thread patrickemailguard-goog
Hey Millie,I know it sounds crazy but yes you have to drink more water when you
take water pills. It's a question of the wet stuff being where it needs to be
while trying to get rid of it where we don't want it.And yes Prednisone can
certainly cause fluid retention. That's probably the biggest reason not to use
it (vs. reasons to use it!)I know it's not an option for many people for a lot
of reasons but sweating really made the difference for me. (Actually sweating
vs. sweating the whole ordeal.) If that's sort of an option you don't have to
get overheated to make it work. In fact as you know that's why we  sweat  - to
keep cool.  So just sitting in a warm enough environment to make you need a
shower while using a fan to keep cool might be an idea.My thought it that there
are only four ways I can think of to shed fluid. Your kidneys are doing all
they can, helped along by the water pills. Only supermodels are dumb enough to
loose fluid out of the
wrong end on purpose. And although it seems like it might be sufficient,
hopefully no one reading this sheds enough tears to dry their bodies out. So I
decided to try gold old-fashioned, pre-air-conditioned perspiration. I really
was opposed to the idea and very used to staying cool all the time but once I
got started I was surprised how good it felt. Almost like we were meant to
operate that way. My apologies to Mr. Carrier.I have another half-baked theory
that our national explosion of obesity is tied to A/C. I digress.Patrick

[CMLHope] depression

2008-06-02 Thread kellyelise

Thank you Jeanie for your advice. Actually, I am going into my second
good week and feel more positive and hopeful. I have been writing
poetry to get through the rough spots and that seems to help. I do
need to get back on the fish oil. I bought flowers to plant yesterday
and my husband rototilled the garden so I can get started on that
(garden is imperative with the rising cost of gas and subsequent cost
of food). I also have a rock garden with a waterfall that I need to
get up and running - that area of the yard provides me with a lot of
peace and serenity. I put that in when they thought my granddaughter
had melanoma - I was just sick with worry and putting that garden in
made a huge difference. It is now my memory garden and family/
friends have given me special rocks and seashells to add to it - as
well as plants from their yards. My religious belief is that all
religions are right. Hence, I have a wide range of belief systems
and do not subscribe to any one specific religion. I have studied many
and found truth in every one and also things I do not agree with -
so, I pick out what feels right to me and ignore the things that
don't feel right. To each his own. I do read Daily Word and feel
that positive affirmations are important. Too bad those affirmations
do little for me when I'm in the pit. But, I am trending upwards! I
hope to maintain that trend by doing the things I love.

Thank you so much for your blessings, prayers and love,
Kelly
