Grace and I are leaving on the 20th of Jan. out of San Juan for a 7 day cruise to the southern Caribbean. We love going on cruises. The Dr. at the hospital gave me the 8 glasses for 8 oz. and I was following it. I was diagnosed with Shograns Syndrome and Stage 3 Kidney Failure. The Kidney Specialst ask me to drink about 90 oz a day. Shograns Syndrome was developed because of blood transfusions for heart and my Gleevec. The kidney diease is from to much statins (I was on 80 mg daily for 19 years and Gleevec for 5 years. I do have to be very careful about balancing my fluid intake. Richard H.. Re: [CMLHope] Depression
Hey Millie,I know it sounds crazy but yes you have to drink more water when you take water pills. It's a question of the wet stuff being where it needs to be while trying to get rid of it where we don't want it.And yes Prednisone can certainly cause fluid retention. That's probably the biggest reason not to use it (vs. reasons to use it!)I know it's not an option for many people for a lot of reasons but sweating really made the difference for me. (Actually sweating vs. sweating the whole ordeal.) If that's sort of an option you don't have to get overheated to make it work. In fact as you know that's why we sweat - to keep cool. So just sitting in a warm enough environment to make you need a shower while using a fan to keep cool might be an idea.My thought it that there are only four ways I can think of to shed fluid. Your kidneys are doing all they can, helped along by the water pills. Only supermodels are dumb enough to loose fluid out of the wrong end on purpose. And although it seems like it might be sufficient, hopefully no one reading this sheds enough tears to dry their bodies out. So I decided to try gold old-fashioned, pre-air-conditioned perspiration. I really was opposed to the idea and very used to staying cool all the time but once I got started I was surprised how good it felt. Almost like we were meant to operate that way. My apologies to Mr. Carrier.I have another half-baked theory that our national explosion of obesity is tied to A/C. I digress.Patrick --- On Wed, 12/19/12, C.M. Houtz wrote: From: C.M. [CMLHope] Depression
When someone has CML or any other type of cancer, then they also have a certain amount of depression as well. Some more then others but it is just an emotion that we as humans all share when we are ill. It doesn't necessarily have to be from the Gleevec or any other type of TKI's, but the fact that we have cancer. I don't take any TKI's because I had a bone marrow transplant about 23 years ago this coming May. In all of this time I have learned there are several kinds of emotions that we go through when we have cancer. The first is disbelief, then we go through, let me get another opinion because this can't be happening to me. Most, but not all go through, why is GOD punising me. Then some sort of acceptance, but hope that they will get up the next morning and find that it was all a big mistake. Then finally once they realize that they in fact do have cancer, they go into a depression. Now this may not necessarily happen in this order, but for the most part, all or most of these emotions are just our way of trying to deal with this. Your mind is a powerful "tool" and the way you use it can make a big difference. I always say that your mind can try to help your body. I'm not saying that having a good outlook on life will be able to cure you of this or any other disease but your mind can work in ways that can help you. If you are depressed most of the time your body will react as if your disease is just eating away at you. If your attitude is such that you feel good about yourself in spite of what you may be going through then you will become less depressed, and maybe not even feeling any depression at all. Believe me I know all about this, When I had my bone marrow transplant I had to live in a six by nine plastic bubble in a hospital for just about seven months. However, I learned to control my depression and you can't imagin how much my mind helped my body heal in all of that time. Depression can really hurt you if you let it, while having less can actually help you. It has to deal with some hormones that are produced in your brain. One being Endorphine. If you know anything about marathon races when the runners are finished with their run they actually feel a natural high. This is because of the production of Endorphines in their brain. I knew the president of a group in New York City called the Road Runners. His name was Fred Lebow and he developed brain cancer. It was a very agressive cancer with a longevity of only a few months at best. Every time Fred received a radiation treatment he would go up to the roof of the hospital and run around it. Fred lived for about seven years, and when he died they found that all of his brain tumors were not even there anymore. They said that he died of all the radiation treatments. It is a sad story but it did show how someones attitude, and in Fred's case how he was able to sustain himself for so long. Everyone may be different but cancer doesn't care who you are, so in that sense we are all the same. I always end any of my posts with two numbers 18. I'm sure that you have already seen me do this. These two numbers symbolize life. 18's Marty -- [CMLHope] A support group of http://cmlhope.com - You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "CMLHope" group. Thank you Jeanie for your advice. Actually, I am going into my second good week and feel more positive and hopeful. I have been writing poetry to get through the rough spots and that seems to help. I do need to get back on the fish oil. I bought flowers to plant yesterday and my husband rototilled the garden so I can get started on that (garden is imperative with the rising cost of gas and subsequent cost of food). I also have a rock garden with a waterfall that I need to get up and running - that area of the yard provides me with a lot of peace and serenity. I put that in when they thought my granddaughter had melanoma - I was just sick with worry and putting that garden in made a huge difference. It is now my "memory" garden and family/ friends have given me "special" rocks and seashells to add to it - as well as plants from their yards. My religious belief is that all religions are "right." Hence, I have a wide range of belief systems and do not subscribe to any one specific religion. I have studied many and found "truth" in every one and also things I do not agree with - so, I pick out what feels "right" to me and ignore the things that don't feel "right." To each his own. I do read "Daily Word" and feel that positive affirmations are important. Too bad those affirmations do little for me when I'm in the pit. But, I am trending upwards! I hope to maintain that trend by doing the things I love. Thank you so much for your blessings, prayers and love, Kelly --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ [CMLHope] A support group of http://cmlhope.com - You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "CMLHope" group.
