I use artists acrylic paint, the stuff in the tubes. The colour match is good
and the paint sticks like poop on a baby blanket.

Stus-List Electronics at the helm

2013-05-04 Thread Robert Gallagher
I am getting ready to fully wire my Chartplotter/depth/ to power, depth
transducer, and Ais GPS that is located down below.

There is not enough room to go through the pedestal as the autopilot and
engine cables are taking up most of the space and I don't want anything to
get tangled.

The pedestal guard is the obvious choice but there are NO HOLES down there.
Only nuts on studs or bolts at the base of the guard tubes.

HELP!

A new pedestal guard seems like overkill just to run wires. And yes, I
need the chartplotter at the helm.

Thanks in advance, I know someone will come up with a solution :)

The pedestal guard should run through the deck into the bilge. You
can run a couple wires through each tube. If you are runnng NMEA 2000
devices it is a PIA but doable. The other option is to get waterproof
clamps from Blue Seas or others and drill through the deck.

Does your pedestal guard tube not have an aluminum casting with two bolts
through the deck at the foot each side? If so. Loosen up the guard at the
binnacle, lift it up and you should be able to drill holes through the cockpit
sole in the hole in the castings. You can then route cables down the guard. .

To run wires through the guard would need changing the feet from single bolt
style to the two bolt kind. The single bolt style has the bolt inside the
tubing while the two bolt style places the bolts outside, so you can run wires
up inside. Pricey but might be worth it if you want to hide the wires? Some new
pedestal guard kits include the feet, so for a few dollars more. . . Check for
Edson as well as Navpod.

Remove the Binnacle guard leaving the floor mounts in place and drill holes
through the cockpit floor for the wires. Keep insides of mounts clean so
guard fits back in. I started with a small drill then over drilled in size
and then filled with epoxy to seal any coring and then drilled the size for
the wires. Pretty thick with plywood floor etc. Then drilled hole where
wires are to come out the Binnacle guard (hardest part to do). Since I ran
many wires into an Edson pod for three instruments , I had to align holes in
each side of the Pod binnacle interface with Edson mounts so no wires are
exposed. Run the wires through before remounting the Binnacle Guard
simplifies the snaking of wires etc. Good Luck!

I had to upsize to a 1.5" guard when I put new instruments at the
helm. (Radar, plotter, wind, depth, speedo, and autopilot head).
Seemed like a big waste money at the time, but in retrospect, I'm glad
I did it.

If you plan on having the boat for a while, it's probably worth doing.
If you're not going to keep the boat for a while, don't put new
electronics on.

That is already well underway!

I already prepped the penetrations and just have to seal them with the epoxy.

The plan is to get to all of them within the next few years. i did the all the
pens at the bow last year and added backing plates to everything. This year is

Subject: Stus-List Installing teak handrails

Hello again,

As i'm getting closer to installing my new handrails, I have grown concern
regarding the bedding compound. My old handrails were lag screwed from the
bottom. I like this approach as it makes installing finished handrails a much
less time consuming job. There would be no need for plugging, sanding and
re-finishing the plugs after installation. I wanted to re-bed them using the
method described on http://www.pbase.com/mainecruising/rebedding_hardware.
However, the more I think about it, using the Butyl tape doesn't lend itself
very well to using lag screws. It seems to me you don't want the bolt/screw
turning, as it would grab the Butyl and pull it out of place. You know, that
stuff likes to stick to itself and everything else.

Wouldn't turning the lag bolt mess up the nice cone shaped blob you place for
the countersink area?

 ... Am I overthinking this?

...should I go back to jolly 'ol 5200?

...should I reconsider through bolts and plugs and then have to deal with
refinishing the plug areas. I wouldn't mind but, the need to re-coat 8 times
at 1 time per 24hrs really makes it tedious. Especially, when it takes me 40
minutes to get to the boat. Thats not much fun after work every day. 1 1/2
driving for 20 minutes of coating, not to mention the gas...LOL

As always, I appreciate any and all opinions and insights,

Re: Stus-List Flags not trailerable

2013-05-04 Thread Mike
I am looking at a Laser 28. Still reasonable headroom. PHRF about the same as
the C&C. I like the Andrews , but it is a little pricy.

If you replace with a MacGregor you wont have to worry about flags anymore (or
is that a Tattoo?)

What are you getting? Andrews 28 for sail on East Coast is a great
trailerable. New J88 trailerable but needs crane. J70/Melges 24 etc trailer
launchable and fast. S2 7.9 traditional trailerable boat. Hobie 33 a great
trailerable boat if you like being wet. The choices are endless!

Mike

PS. The flags are yours

I am in the process of selling my boat. I am looking at something smaller and
on a trailer. What is the protocol for all the racing flags Ragtime has won.
Do they go with the boat, can they be displayed on a future boat of mine, or
will they stay in a box in the basement?
