Re: Stus-List Wash Main Cover

2013-10-17 Thread Dennis C.
I apply waterproofing, either 303 or equivalent, to my canvas every year. Use a
small 0.5 gallon pump sprayer from Walmart. Helps keep the canvas clean and
waterproof. I think it extends the life of expensive canvas.

Pay now or pay later.

I've washed mine in the home washer. It's 15 ft long but cleans up fine. I
should spray it afterward with a waterproofing, but haven't yet after 10 years.

Re: Stus-List Booze on Board?

2013-10-17 Thread Andrew Burton
The rum ration was originally beer with a daily ration of 4.5 litres per sailor
until the 17th century. In 1655, rum replaced beer as the sailor's daily
alcohol ration because of the capture of Jamaica from Spain. This change was
made because beer would often spoil on long voyages. The ration of rum was half
a pint per day, and originally issued neat; sailors would "prove" its strength
by checking that gunpowder doused with rum would still burn (thus verifying
that rum was at least 57% ABV.)

I concur. Drinking on a boat, even at
anchor, is not as benign as drinking at home. In the event of any
type of emergency, you need ALL aboard to be sober, not just the
skipper.  If your hobby is drinking, stay ashore, and knock
  yourself out.

Great stuff. Having some now. So are the fruit flies.

I keep Mt Gay for regular Rum and cokes, younger crew like regular Captains.

Also keep Jose Cuervo Tequila, Triple Sec, Kettle Vodka & Tanqueray for my

Also J Lohr for my red loving friends, and Relax or Slate (Riesling) for my

I can certainly understand Jacks feeling on the state of litigation these

so, not going to dwell on it, life's too short.

No drinking during races. It's too crazy.

Re: Stus-List Booze on Board?

2013-10-17 Thread Indigo
I have two rums on board when cruising (on anchor / mooring consumption only).
Goslings for Dark and Stormies and Pussers for sipping. (Pussers is the
original British Navy rum. If it worked for them it works for me!!) (disclosure
- I am a Brit!)

I used to buy Regatta ginger beer. Small cans were ideal for Dark and Stormies.
Several developed pin holes and leaked everywhere. Contacted the company and
they were aware of the problem and were addressing it. Been a couple of years
now - maybe time to go back to that brand. Had a similar problem with diet
coke. Suspect the thin aluminum can't take the acidic contents

Stus-List Booze on Board

2013-10-17 Thread Maturo, John
Why scrimp, booze only gets better with age and the hard stuff can stand up to
the freezing winter to ease the labors off season.

We sail with handles of Rum, Vodka, and Gin, some sipping Bourbon, a full
storage bin of red and white wine in several varieties, port, a couple of
emergency black box wines, then lots of boat beer to even out the load,
Schaeffer (skippers choice for the racing hands from my lost youth and still a
nostalgic favorite that my grown kids just don't understand), PBR, Coors Light.
The usual mixers. No frozen drinks on board, just good strong simple drinks.
This summer we had some mysterious loss of liquid from our Canada Dry Gingerale
while in the stainless steel cooler. Maybe galvanic reaction, but only the
ginger ale, not the beer or soda water in similar aluminum cans. I wonder if
anyone can comment on this.

On the older PSS shaft seal versions without the vent tube; burbing may also be
needed after sailing in boisterous conditions where the boat may "surf" or
experience turbulent water near the prop shaft. Also, if a diver using SCUBA
has been under the boat, some of the vented air bubbles may get trapped in the
bellows.

If you are motoring along (several hours or more) and begin to hear a squeaking
sound from the shaft seal area, air may have been trapped prevent water from
cooling and lubricating the shaft seal to prop shaft rotor interface. Happened
on Calypso sailing/motoring between Barkley Sound and Roche Harbor (18 to 20
hours underway, fog with wind for 15 hours). It was 0dark30, rough seas owing
to the tide rip off Victoria BC, not enough wind to make decent progress
against the current so we are motor sailing. I could faintly hear a squeak
over the on deck noises and the engine. One of the Calypso crew dropped down
under the cockpit to investigate and confirmed the noise was coming from the
shaft seal. (It was also warm to the touch.) A quick burp and all was well.

On the flip side (traditional stuffing box), I had a Ericson 30+ in a timeshare
lease program back in the early 80's with a traditional stuffing box. While a
customer was motoring along the packing nut became loose. (I never determined
why and the maintenance service claimed it had been checked and the lock nut
was tight. My guess was the packing nut was over tightened and became loose
when the customer backed out of a slip.)

The boat was on its way to the bottom by

Scotch; the older and more singular malt the better.

Mixes well with Pellegrino sparkling water.

Use in moderation or you'll go broke buying the stuff and have to sell yer

Stus-List Booze on board

2013-10-17 Thread cenelson

Type: Gin (usually Tanqueray), bourbon (Wild Turkey), rum (crew dependent but
usually large quantities of bottom shelf stuff!) and (it goes without saying)
beer.

When: Nothing before races, only food and 1 beer between races and, subject to
travel involved, the 'hard stuff' (from 1 or 2 drinks if driving home to
'riding bicycles off the dock' levels if staying overnight!).

Curt,

There's almost always red wine and beer on board the Enterprise.

On any given night, people may bring something extra and we even have a
12V blender on board for iced margaritas.

We even sometimes have this on board:

Beer. But that's not really booze. It's as necessary as sails. So red wine,
as well as your list.
By the way, we never fly a "cocktail" flag. I figure if we're aboard, it's
implied that the cocktail flag is flying.

It's pretty pricey ($3K), but with all the bottom cleaning services and

Re: Stus-List [SPAM] Now on to STUFFING BOXES

2013-10-17 Thread Martin DeYoung
>>... the older version which has to be "burped" after launched to release the
>>air trapped in the shaft log. <<

The boat was on its way to the bottom by the time the customer figured out he
could screw the packing nut back on and stem the flow enough for the pumps to
keep up. Hauled the boat immediately and put on a PSS Shaft Seal.

Ditto Joe's experience. Mine is the older version which has to be "burped"
after launched to release the air trapped in the shaft log.
The more recent versions have a vent that must be led above the waterline.

The only product that Sunbrella recommends for cleaning is 303 cleaner.
http://www.303products.com/303r-fabric-and-vinyl-cleaner-32oz.html.
You can add OxiClean for soaking tough areas.
We use plastic surgical brushes for any scrubbing, Sunbrella is quite
chafe-sensitive.
