Re: Stus-List Window Replacement

2015-04-21 Thread robert via CnC-List

Jeff:
Due to leaks in the windows, and no matter what I tried, the leaks
didn't stop until we replaced the windows. I took the old windows to
the retailer who produced new acrylic windows and we installed with Sika
295UV. I have posted the step by step process here on the list several
times so I won't subject the listers with it another time.
If you decide to go that route, contact me off list and I will take you
through the process we followed.

Take your windows out, take them to any place that deals with acrylic

out of 1/4 plywood to take in.

Let me know if you come up with a good glue solution...I'm looking to
do mine again, as I apparently didn't use enough glue or clamping and

my windows have sprung out a bit...enabling water to get in...

Does re-caulking alone solve a leaking problem?

If I need new windows where can I purchase them in the Toronto area?

Re: Stus-List Sealing deck gear

2015-04-21 Thread Peter Fell via CnC-List
Contemplating the use of flexible rubber in one situation - the acrylic top
panel on the companionway hatch of my C&C 27 is attached to the top of the
teak side and end rails with screws. No sealer I can see and the screws are
working loose so the whole thing is getting sloppy and leaks when the dodger
is not in place. I was thinking of pulling if off, filling the screw holes
with epoxy and re-drilling them and then using rubber between the teak and
the acrylic ... maybe with some butyl added to the screws with a countersink
under the rubber. Figured it might be aesthetically more pleasing than a
bunch of goo of some type. I was thinking bicycle inner tube.

But then again, Sikaflex 295UV, with the teak and acrylic properly primed
and masking in place during application would work as well I think and add
some structural 'rigidity' to the assembly, probably eliminating future
issues coming up again with the screws.

I have used both polysulfide sealer and butyl tape to keep water out of the
cabin from gear mounted on the cabin or deck. I prefer butyl tape because it
is less messy and easy to remove.

My question is why not use something like flexible rubber, plastic or cork
sheets to provide a flexible, waterproof seal?

Since these are not used, there must be some problem with them like heat,
sun exposure, etc., but with today's modern materials, it seems that butyl
tape or a goo like something out of a tube is so last century.

OTOH, maybe last century is as good as it gets with this technology.

Re: Stus-List Chartbook Question

2015-04-21 Thread LKL via CnC-List
Jack,
that is what I did. Downloaded the charts, saved them to a file and sent to a
printing company. Because they are large files, I sent them individually. The
24x36 charts are black and white but also had them printed in color on 11x17.
Maybe your printing company can print the large ones in color which would be
better. The only one that we could not print is chart 411 of the whole gulf,
different format.

I have the MapTech Chartkit for my region and really, really like it. They
aren't cheap but having all the large and smaller scale charts in one easy to
use package is great. The different scale charts are very handy for vessels
making coastal passages and then moving to ICW or inland waters. You can look
at the big picture on a small scale chart then switch to a large scale chart
when you enter a port or harbor.

Even though I've made the transit dozens of times, I keep the chartkit on the

After a looong hiatus, Maptech just came out with the 4th edition of the
Region 16 New Orleans to Panama City chartkit. I didn't waste any time buying
a copy. My old spare 3rd editions are still valuable. I've sold one already
and have one on eBay. I have yet another.

You may consider grabbing used, older editions for the regions you need from
eBay. There will be differences between editions. I've noticed some in my

has been renumbered. Some shoals may have moved slightly but not much.

Re: Stus-List Chartbook Question

2015-04-21 Thread Dennis C. via CnC-List
Lloyd,

I have the MapTech Chartkit for my region and really, really like it. They
aren't cheap but having all the large and smaller scale charts in one easy
to use package is great. The different scale charts are very handy for
vessels making coastal passages and then moving to ICW or inland waters.
You can look at the big picture on a small scale chart then switch to a
large scale chart when you enter a port or harbor.

Even though I've made the transit dozens of times, I keep the chartkit on
the dining table for quick reference.

After a looong hiatus, Maptech just came out with the 4th edition of the
Region 16 New Orleans to Panama City chartkit. I didn't waste any time
buying a copy. My old spare 3rd editions are still valuable. I've sold
one already and have one on eBay. I have yet another.

You may consider grabbing used, older editions for the regions you need
from eBay. There will be differences between editions. I've noticed some
in my area. For instance, the Marianne Channel near Cat Island in
Mississippi Sound has been renumbered. Some shoals may have moved slightly
but not much.

Stus-List Chartbook Question

2015-04-21 Thread LKL via CnC-List

Hello Listers. Thanks to so many of you for your help over the last few years
and especially Fred Street for his excellant guidance on my new electronics and
more. I am close to departing the Texas coast for the Florida Keys and eastward
onto the Bahamas and the Caribbean.

I have downloaded and printed NOAA charts from Texas to Florida but am looking
to add paper chart books eastward and would appreciate any recommendations in
that regard.

Sincerely,

John — I might be able to provide you with a home for the pole, if Doug gets
just the system itself. What pole system did you use? Edson, or…?
