Re: Stus-List Was Wire Gauge, now Where can I get LED?
Hi Jonathan I made a similar change to a perko from Aquasignal 40 series fixture and replaced the bulb with LED.. Very simple. Look carefully at the entry of the wiring so that you don’t have a bottom entry if you have a different type. You need to make sure you have enough wire to connect the new fitting if not the same make. I redrilled a mounting hole. I think the AS25 is still available though and pretty reasonably priced. I just couldn’t find the replacement when needed so switched manufacturers. I have more than just LED replacement bulbs from marinebeam.com. Re: Stus-List New Sails for Alera
Funny little story about Butch Ulmer...the U in UK. Many many moons ago, when I was 12, I stepped aboard a 1972 C C 35 (the owner went on to buy a 38 on which I crewed and then a 40, by which time I had moved on to girls, cars and beer) as a Foredeck Ape. We had a full set of Ulmer Sails (the predecessor company to UK Sails) so naturally Butch was aboard a number of times to look over the sails. Well one day he was opining on such and such and, I, in my most know-it-all-teenager-way said he was wrong. And I kept insisting on it. Finally Butch looks at me and says Boy, I have squeezed more seawater outta my socks than you have been over... I shut up. David F. Re: Stus-List Subject: Was Wire Gauge, now Where can I get LED?
Warm white LEDs do OK behind a colored lens, but the usual cold white (5000-6000K) LEDs do NOT work for red or green running lights. The noise issue is caused by the switch-mode driver for the LEDs that produces a ton of RF. I have a bunch of FleaBay special LED light in my cabin lights and most of them are quiet on RF and one or two make a mess out of the SSB. There is a lot online you can find about various LED tricolors being noisy or not. For a replacement bulb, you might just have to go through a few and test them before you go up the mast. I have been thinking about trying to make LED red over greens, since they can used with the deck lights and the tricolor cannot. Re: Stus-List Subject: Was Wire Gauge, now Where can I get LED?
Another POV, I have heard a lot of discussion about this over the years, both ways, (White vs. Colored) but just a month ago I replaced several lites using Marinebeam. I talked to the fellow there about colors, and he told me using a white light behind a colored lens only allowed around 30% of the light through, and using, say red behind a red lens allowed 80% through. I decided to follow his advice and going back and forth between white and red was a dramatic difference, the red behind red became bright blood red. Not sure I got the Percentages right, but Now I believe this. I agree with Dennis, nice company, good stuff. Bill, Beats me how old. It came from another 35/3 owner on the list. I've put 3,000 miles on it the last 2 seasons, and it shows. Shape has not changed, but the luff is worn/has small holes. I had repairs done last year. No delamination luckily. The sail is fine on the Bay, but I would not go offshore with it. In my very limited experience, when laminate sails fail, they fail completely. The PO installed a Schaefer In Boom furler but went cheap on the mylar sails to go with it. They were ~15 years old and both sails have been in for repairs every year for the past two years. The main was actually not made correctly to the stringent Schaefer specs and the Genoa was to the point of disintegration along the leech. Aout four days into our annual three week sailing trip, the leech detached from the Genoa (again). We called ahead and pulled into the Van Isle marina in Sidney BC and right up to the dock at UK sail loft to get the genny repaired. They fixed it and even gave us an overnight berth with power and everything. I met Suart Dahlgren, the owner. He had been the tech talk presenter at the CC RDV a few years ago and was familiar with the boat. He is also very knowledgeable. What started as a discussion about possibly getting a new Genoa ultimately turned into deal for both primary sails. The Mainsail was never done right and at its end of life. Of course, the cost was a huge impediment to doing it. But Stu gave a sweet 15% discount of each sail and an additional 5% for getting both...but the real clincher was the 0.75 USD to CAD exchange rate, which amounted to an additional 25%. Lynn and I talked it over, slept on it and were unanimous on going for it! :D Since I need thin sails to fit the boom when furled we went to a set of UK Tape-Drive Cruising sales. They're due for delivery in October. I'll let you all know if they are as good as I hope. The great thing about the Internet is that scammers like this can run but they can't hide. You can find a lot about someone if you know how to look and they don't cover their tracks perfectly. In this case the weak point is his phone number, which is basically a unique search key. Tracing that it appears that he's a sailboat flipper of sorts. I found a previous ad with *identical* text in places (the ALL CAPS stuff about please be an informed bidder, 24 hours deposit required, etc). He listed this Morgan Out Island 36 earlier this year, in Florida: http://www.ebay.com/itm/INCREDIBLY-SPACIOUS-GLOBAL-CRUISER-by-famous-yacht-maker-No-Reserve-Aft-Cabin-/201335429823 Someone on cruisersforum noticed it, but there was no commentary on it (last post here): http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/f47/ebay-sailboat-scam-143861-2.html Also a Cal 34 in Virginia which sold for $6.3k: http://www.ebay.com/itm/LAPWORTH-JENSEN-WORLD-CRUISER-For-Pennies-on-The-Dollar-NO-RESERVE-Xlnt-4-Couple-/201314971076 He has a neutral ebay review from a year+ ago which said: caveat emptor. Boat was not ready to put in the water and sail for a listing of SERIOUS BLUE WATER OCEAN CRUISER No Res - New York City (#200361465706) which sold for $1425. Oh and he flips motor boats too: http://www.boats4sale.pro/detail/us/OHnFCCdmndHnCeFCPHd/Rare-Opportunity-to-Own-a-20K-to-30K-SPORTS-CRUISER-w The Morgan OI listing has surprisingly extensive dialogue from him. So at least he's a good writer and seller of the cruising dream. Lots of gems in here which make me laugh: Every boat is a project boat. However, some boats are more project than boat. Buying a boat like this Out Island is for someone who wants to get to know their vessel like a cowboy knows his horse and saddle and six gun or like a surgeon knows the tools and machines in the surgery room. We adopt stray boats. We already have our own cruising sailboat and we don't need another for ourselves, but from experience and in our early cruising days before we were spending half our year directly in boat yards and marinas and exotic ports, we know how hard it is to find truly worth blue-water cruisers that can be purchased on a normal middle-class income. We are relatively young folks ourselves, and part of our passion is helping other young couples and families and middle class retired folks afford the cruising life-style. To purchase a boat where every single thing is already as it should be, would be a dis-service to the active sailor because it prevents you from getting to know how everything on your boat is set up and how it works. I don't know if the Morgan OI sale was a scam, in the way that the LF38 listing is clearly a scam (since the salvage is not disclosed). It appears he actually knows his stuff, or at least enough to quote much of Nigel Calder and cruisersforum. Re: Stus-List 1983 38 Landfall on Ebay
It is almost impossible to leave negative feedback about any eBay purchase no matter how egregious the transaction. You simply won’t be allowed do it. Many frustrated buyers simply “plea-bargain” for Neutral so they can “move on”. I bought a How-To manual for a computer game once and only the package that it was packed in arrived. The manila envelope had been reused from a previous purchase and resealed with what appeared to be pancake syrup (or KY). The seller begged me, “in the name of Our Lord Jesus”, not to give him/her neutral feedback. BAH! Having said all that, I actually bought my CC 27 on eBay and love it. Now, if I can only stop the rain from leaking under the toe rails. The Westerbeke had to have a crack welded too. Oh, and the balsa has to be replaced where the roof was cracked; cosmetic stuff, really. But there's certainly a lot of spin and marketing in there! -Patrick On Fri, Aug 21, 2015 at 1:24 PM, cnc-list-requ...@cnc-list.commailto:cnc-list-requ...@cnc-list.com wrote: From: CnC-List [mailto:cnc-list-boun...@cnc-list.commailto:cnc-list-boun...@cnc-list.com] On Behalf Of Danny Haughey via CnC-List Sent: August-21-15 17:11 To: cnc-list@cnc-list.commailto:cnc-list@cnc-list.com Cc: Danny Haughey Subject: Re: Stus-List Stus List - 1983 38 Landfall on Ebay you know the weird thing is that the Yacht Salvage ad still seems active and this guys ebay feedback goes back to 2001 with 100% positive... … next reality show – Flip that boat That show was on some cable channel earlier this year. I watched a couple of episodes but it was mostly about fixing up / modifying trailerable boats into a unique custom flat water toy. The star guy was a country singer and the location was in SE USA. His crew of boat modifiers would not be allowed within 2 miles of Calypso. My guess is there will not be a second season. I sold it to a guy from Colorado, he drove out to Boston, fixed the hull and rudder, and was going to place it in the water….Then I think he was going to resell ? Try to call him : William 970-319-4361 I think this guy buys salvaged boats and flys out and fixes them and then sells them on a let the buyer beware format. Stus-List Sound Proofing
I recently purchased a CC 37 Plus and the pathetic sound insulation in the engine enclosure was disintegrating, so I ripped it all out. Now the question is, what to replace it with.
