They have skiing in New England? :)

I'm in Copper Mountain then. Week there then week in Vail/Beaver Creek. Then
Steamboat/Winter Park 1st week in Feb.

Got gaps on either sides of those trips if anybody wants to ski Colorado. This
year I bought Rocky Mountain Super Pass for skiing at Copper, Winter Park,
Crested Butte, Steamboat. $559 buys a lot of skiing.

Stus-List C 36 centreboard refit

2015-09-16 Thread Adam Hayden via CnC-List
Hi Rino

I actually just did a full refit on a 1981 C 36. I purchased the boat after
she sank in Bedford Basin (in Halifax)last fall.

The hull is cored and is cored under the waterline as well. It seems that C
did this well as there has been no de lamination of the hull.

As you can imagine most systems had to be replaced including electrical,
plumbing and propane.

I did plumb in a propane system however, primarily because the old system was
scary with hose clamps and a number of T junctions. I had a hose company make
new hoses and attach all fittings so they are properly done. This included a
40 foot hose to the forward bulkhead for a propane furnace.

there is also HMP Marine in Ontario that sells a number of C original type
parts.

I documented the entire process with before and after pictures.
One outcome is that I now know the entire boat and every aspect of each system.

Thank you for the link to the NE Rendezvous.

I have not been able to view the cnc photo album by clicking on the “view

comes up “web page cannot be found”. I admit to having only rudimentary IT

Any hints?

Skiing yes, snow, maybe. At least we have oxygen to breathe as we slide on

Got to buy a new main so I can do the A2B, so the East coast will have to

Stus-List Interior Cushions

2015-09-16 Thread Al Serrato via CnC-List
I have a 1981 C & C '34 with original cushions. I recently got an estimate from
a local marine canvas shop for replacement of all the fabric (retaining the
original foam) using the lowest cost sunbrella material. I was surprised to see
it was over $4000 for the job, and over $6000 to replace the foam as well.

I would appreciate any suggestions for alternative ways to go on upgrading the
interior upholstery.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Stus-List Interior Cushions

2015-09-16 Thread Paul Fountain via CnC-List
We had Perception's cushions done a few years ago - had the people who have
done some home furniture recovering do the labour for us, bought the fabric ( a
nautical print microfiber) at a local fabric discount store for them. Old
Timers has removed the cost, but it was significantly less than a Marine place
- they replaced any foam that needed replacing. Still looks good. Nice part is
all the cushions are easy to remove from the boat to get the work done.

Run, don't walk, to a local Upholstry shop with your original foam and get an
estimate. This is likely to save you money but even if it doesn't you would
have an idea of the cost without a 'marine' label. You might also consider
using Ultrasuede/Ultraleather or some other fabric that is mold resistant.

I did my cushions on an old boat myself. Had foam cut by the foam shop,
bought fabric from furniture repair shop. Layed everything out in family room.
Sewed it all on an old Singer machine. My teenage daughter went to school
bragging that I had a sewing room in the house. Bought a Sailrite sail cover
kit and sewed it aboard Pegasus last winter. Had my cat Dinghy supervising.

Foam is expensive, Sunbrella is expensive. When we redid the interior of our
24' we used outdoor furniture fabric, uv stable, mildew and rot resistant,
stain resistant too. Way cheaper than sunbrella, and much nicer to sit on. Even
though we did all the work ourselves, materials were still about $1000.

Re: Stus-List boat names

2015-09-16 Thread Russ & Melody via CnC-List

Hi Danny,

Good luck in your search, do take some time with it. Good timing on
my part to be commenting after Edd.

A most important consideration... are you using the boat for cruising
or racing?

If for racing then the primary consideration is how your ego will
fare when your peers consider her name. For this situation, something
cute and witty is appropriate.

One of my favourites is Dilligaf (as in, do I look like I give a...).

If for cruising. Can she wear your wife's name (and will you be
married to her longer than you have the boat)? Years ago, when we got
the old hooker as a hull & deck project the name issue was not easy.
After some time I took a photo (this is a rectangular paper with an
image on it) of the boat and wrote my wife's name on the bow,
using shadowed letters. I showed her the mocked up photo and asked,
"What do you think of this name for the boat?" Melody Dawn, her
first and middle names. She cried. We had a name and kept that boat
for 18 years.

It's the racing types that will ask the questions about Jane.

Cheers, Russ

Re: Stus-List boat names

2015-09-16 Thread Patrick Davin via CnC-List
When we were choosing our boat name recently we had a few guidelines:
- No puns, silly names, or motor boat names ("Master Baiter")
- Relatively easy to pronounce, spell, and understand over the VHF
- Uniqueness - some names are very common (Amazing Grace, Second Wind, etc)
and it'd be unfortunate to have the same name as someone else in the marina
or sailing region. Ideally it'd even be unique in the US Coast Guard
database (which you can check online), in case you ever want to become a
documented vessel.

If you're into music, a lot of our ideas revolved around song names - High
Hopes (Pink Floyd), An Awesome Wave (Alt-J), Tessellate (Alt-J).

Although some names - like An Awesome Wave - can seem like they're tempting
the fates / sea gods. I wouldn't pick a name like Rogue Wave because for
one it might be bad luck, and if you ever do get into trouble, people will
say "I told you so."

Re: Stus-List boat names

2015-09-16 Thread David Lenehan via CnC-List
Danny,

There are lots of very innovative boat names over here in Australia.
Rather than bore you with a whole raft of them, I'll mention two that have
always stuck out in my mind.

The first is "Waikikamukau". For all the world this name looks very Kiwi
(New Zealand) or even Polynesian. The boat owner was constantly pounded
with questions about the origin of this name as you might imagine. But
stop scratching your head and try to pronounce it. Then you'll start to
realise he was having a piece of everyone. Just in case you are having
trouble, I'll break it up for you: Wai-kik-a-mu-kau

The other stand out name came from a skipper who was entering his yacht
into upcoming Australian and world championship regattas. He turned up to
register his brand new boat about an hour before the deadline. Because he
had no name for the boat they wouldn't accept his entry. He walked out of
th eyacht club and right in front of him was a road condition warning
sign. He immediately walked back in and registered his boat as "Slippery
When Wet".

Maybe that will assist your imagination,
David

I don't recall - one of the early posts on the subject. At the price of these
at pyacht I might be tempted to replace my "spare" old style tethers.

Mine does. Which one are you looking at? Ive got the Y

With any tension, you'd need to cut the tether in order to get free if you
were, say, trapped under water. ___

Stus-List New England ski rendevous?

2015-09-16 Thread Joel Aronson via CnC-List
All,

I'm starting to plan a ski trip to New England the weekend of January 23.
If there is interest I could look into a group package for lodging and lift
tickets.

Thoughts?
