Re: Stus-List Raymarine e-Series Chartplotters/MFDs

2016-01-12 Thread Rick Brass via CnC-List
Josh, I rely on AC for up to date hazard, shoaling, and nav aid data as well.
(BTW, I sent a message to your Eboatcard just the other day.)

I delivered a boat early last summer that had a nice Raymarine plotter aboard,
and the chart data included AC hazards notifications. The problem being that
the data was somewhat dated, since the last Raymarine chart data was something
like January 2015. Ditto the Garmin plotter on my own boat, where the Bluechart
data was last updated in June 2014.

I carry an IPad with nav software when I am aboard a boat other than my own.
(Actually I carry it on my own boat but principally for access to the Internet
and email.) The software on the IPad is called Skipper, and the AC data gets
updated automatically about once a month, provided there is a Wi-Fi connection
available for a data download. Skipper also checks for NOAA chart updates
whenever the program is started and there is a Wi-Fi connection, and updates
the chart data stored in the IPad.

There are a couple of rough edges to the Skipper app, and some things I don’t
like about using the IPad for a chart plotter. But, darn, it is nice to always
have up to date charts and hazard warnings wherever I go.

AC is particularly helpful with destination planning but the part I miss on my
chartplotter is the anchorages and hazards which include shoaling and Nav-aid
errors. Additionally, with active captain integrated into the chartplotter I
would be more likely to update those pieces of information. As it stands I can
mark the hazards with waypoints but then have to transfer that info
later...Which never happens.

Re: Stus-List Lemon oil cause mildew?

2016-01-12 Thread Rick Brass via CnC-List
I started using the stuff based on a recommendation from some cruiser friends.
Pinesol to clean the teak. Lemon oil to prevent mildew/mold. Danish teak oil
for preservation and appearance.

I always presumed that lemon oil was something made from the seeds or the peel.
And that it would be somewhat acidic to stop mildew. Guess I never realized it
was mineral oil with added scent.

I wonder if you can actually get oil made from lemons, and whether that is
what my friends had in mind with the recommendation? Guess I can rething the
process of oiling my teak this spring.

Anyway, improving the air circulation seems to have had a beneficial impact on
mildew/mold in my interior.

Just curious Rick, why lemon oil then teak oil?

FWI: I thought lemon oil was just that. Oil from a lemon. I assumed from the
peel. I even checked the bottles at the store very closely. They are labeled
very clearly and plainly as "Lemon Oil". In small print on the back the only
thing to the contrary is a statement which says something to the effect of,
"Contains a minimum of 10% petroleum distillates". I assumed that this was the
solvent which carried the lemon oil.

After researching my previous question to the list of "does lemon oil cause
mildew?" I found that most lemon oils are mineral oil with added scent and
color. In disbelief I re-read both bottles of lemon oil and then resorted to
checking the MSDS. To my dismay the MSDS confirmed that a significant portion
(>90%) of "lemon oil" is just white mineral oil. I went on to check the MSDS
of some other wood oils (teak, watco, etc) most were a mixture of mineral oil
and mineral spirits. As I understand it woods like teak are so dense that a
thinner/solvent is helpful in carrying the oil deeper into the wood pores. One
exception is Danish Oil which has polyurethane mixed in. An additional
exception is any oil which is a "drying oil" boiled linseed is one example and
I think tung oil is another.

If anybody is "into" essential oils I'm planning to make my own wood polish
from mineral oil and tea tree oil. I might try adding lemon too. The tea tree
is evidently supposed to prevent mold and mildew.

Used 3/16 black acrylic, wet sanded with 400 grit to a matte finish. Looks
good. Brother p-touch to label panel, and wires also with special labels.
Labelled and routed all wires and secured with cable ties. Replaced my analog
voltmeter with victonix battery monitor. Fits existing hole

Hi Joel
I had to replace my AC panel, at some point it had a meter in it which
had died and been torn out, looked bad. And I wanted to fit a VHF
adjacent. So I had 2 rectangles cut and I drilled as required, and
painted with black "hammered finish" spray - looks great. And when I
later replaced the panel above it I could easily paint to match.

Paneltronics will let you pick the exact labels you want and just buy
them, so you don't end up with labels for "trim tab" and "annoyingly
loud stereo"...

Re: Stus-List Lemon oil cause mildew?

2016-01-12 Thread Dave via CnC-List
Agreed on ventilation. We had a venture 22 20 years ago that had minor
condensation issues. I added a single passive dome vent to the foredeck,
issue solved. It takes very little but constant air movement to make a real
improvement. Most production boats are very poor in this regard imo.
The cs36t makes clever use of the anchor locker as a dorade vent.

Re: Stus-List Fwd: Stainless steel name plates (46088)

2016-01-12 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
Hey Ken,

I'm very interested. I've always loved the way yours look. Since we're
sorta in a design phase I'd like to come up with something that we can all
agree on. "All" includes anyone that might be interested regardless of
whether or not they own a 34+ or 37+ or any of their variants.

Design considerations would be the font of the C&C, the size of the plates,
the relationship of everything, the size of the sword and it's ratios.

I nominate Gary as the design guy. He's clearly demonstrated his
proficiency.

Gary, you've already done such a nice job which I greatly appreciate. If
you are pursuing your own solution in polycarbonate and are unwilling to be
the "design guy" I would understand. If not, I'd like to see what you can
come up with for this stainless steel solution. I think what you already
came up with is great and matches amazingly close to what was original. I
envision a melding of Ken's plate and your design.

-Instead of being raised as in yours, the characters and symbols would be
recessed.

-Per Ken, instead of being 1/4 inch thick it would be ~1/8th inch.

-The rim is directly on the edge and recessing it will make filling it with
paint challenging. I would eliminate the rim

-As Ken suggested, swords on the forward end and pointing forward.
Different one each for Port and Starboard.

-Slightly larger (1/2 inch added to height and width) so as to cover the
original hole and overlap by 1/4 inch on all sides

-As already discussed while you were originally designing yours, provide
options for various model numbers. As I see it, this is the option which
opens this project to all C&C owners.

-Maybe these "specs" could be kept and managed on the photo album for
future owners. A profit margin could be added with proceeds forwarded to
Stu.

-If we initially drum up enough interested owners I believe it would
justify a FREE set of plates for you. I'm thinking that if we get the per
plate price near $50 it would be very easy to justify.

Thanks a bunch Ken and Gary!

Hello Everybody,

While we are on the subject of C&C 37+ nameplates for sale, I have another
option to put foreward.

As some of you already know, my boat has custom made stainless steel name
plates on each side of my cabin top.

A few photos of them have been circulated in the past. Here is a link to
one of those photos:

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/gh_Za0epuiPkRaZG8fo1NJPE0LDMN2ciJXnWeEGp-rNpYrfVT6JnE_285WjjvuqE_AW-tQ=w1896-h791

...and in context:

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/hWpYcECinHHDMdWwInzVRGSJhWrC0uqlrxElnqjjJWAQZ5gtjFCJUWEJmMCBAK2CnQIuFw=w1896-h791

The plates are made of 11 gauge (1/8") stainless, the letters and symbols
recessed and then infill painted.

Because of the ongoing discussion of name plates I removed mine from the
boat last week and took them to a local business (Protocase) that makes
this sort of thing and specializes in one offs and small quantities
and regularly ships all over North America (and Europe).

Protocase tells me they can easily reproduce these plates exactly the same
as mine or any variation of that layout for the prices listed below, in
Canadian dollars. Remember, the Canadian dollar is in the toilet right now
so the US members on the list will pay considerably less in US dollars. As
of a few minutes ago (according to Google) 1 Canadian Dollar equals 0.70 US
Dollar.

These prices DO NOT include the infill paint, this shop isn't set up to do
that yet (they hope to be able to offer this service very soon, *perhaps as
soon as next week*). These guys (and girls) are into customer satisfaction.

46088-1 NAME PLATE (C&C 37+) REV(-) Quantity 1 Lead Time: 2-3 business
days. Shipping is also included in these prices, not extra (FedEx- 2
business days).

Quantity Product Unit Price
1NAME PLATE (C&C 37+) REV(-)$130.98
1Setup Fee $70.00
1Design Services Fee $40.00

A second, identical plate would not incur an additional $70.00 Setup Fee or
the $40.00 Design Services Fee AND the Unit Price would also drop some.

By the time you are ordering 10 or more IDENTICAL plates the unit price
drops to $53.00 each plus only one charge of the Setup Fee and the Design
Services Fee for the entire order. So a group order, allowing them to make
plates in batches, makes sense for everybody.

Variations on the plate's layout (say, to have the sword pointing
toward the bow on each side of the boat) or lettering changes (to have C&C
37/40+ or C&C 37 XL or whatever) will incur some variation of the $70.00 Setup
Fee (the simpler the change the lower the set up fee) but probably will be
exempt from the $40.00 Design Fee for each variation on the theme.

They did provide a quote on a pdf but Stu's List doesn't allow
attachments. Or if I could attach it, I didn't want to eat up his
bandwidth,

Re: Stus-List Refinish/repaint breaker panels?

2016-01-12 Thread Graham Collins via CnC-List

2016-01-12 Thread Chuck S via CnC-List
I use Pinesol to remove mildew on wood. I thought it had natural pesticide
properties. Am I wrong? It cleans nicely, smells great, removes a little of the
old teak oil and I mix it so I don't have to rinse. It probably would hold up
better if I oiled the wood immediately after wiping down w Pinesol, but it
looks so good, I usually just go sailing instead.

I use Tilex on fiberglass. I spray it on a sponge and wipe the fiberglass
surface w the sponge, so not much is airborne to breathe. I rinse the sponge in
clean water but let the fiberglass air dry.

I went on to check the MSDS of
some other wood oils (teak, watco, etc) most were a mixture of mineral oil and
mineral spirits.

Re: Stus-List Raymarine e-Series Chartplotters/MFDs

2016-01-12 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
AC is particularly helpful with destination planning but the part I miss on
my chartplotter is the anchorages and hazards which include shoaling and
Nav-aid errors. Additionally, with active captain integrated into the
chartplotter I would be more likely to update those pieces of information.
As it stands I can mark the hazards with waypoints but then have to
transfer that info later...Which never happens.

E-boat cards is an extension of AC which broadcasts your location to your
boating friends...and their's to you. Again this is something that would
be nice to have at the helm.

Another technology that is on the horizon which may or may not yet be
integrated into ANY chartplotters is SignalK. SignalK doesn't just allow
you to wirelessly view all of your own ship's info but theoretically allows
your info to be shared to the cloud and others in real time. We're talking
wave heights, depth, current, wind speed, wind direction, barometric
pressure, air temp, and water temp. Imagine being able to see instantly
the conditions which others were experiencing!

Does anyone know if any of the current chartplotters allow importing of
GRIBS? What about importing the free vector/raster charts?

>From my research, all of the above features are either available or being
worked on in the open source world of OpenCPN, Openplotter, or Navigatrix.
A marinized, 12v, touchscreen, monitor can display all of this at the helm.

Re: Stus-List Lemon oil cause mildew?

2016-01-12 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
Just curious Rick, why lemon oil then teak oil?

FWI: I thought lemon oil was just that. Oil from a lemon. I assumed from
the peel. I even checked the bottles at the store very closely. They are
labeled very clearly and plainly as "Lemon Oil". In small print on the
back the only thing to the contrary is a statement which says something to
the effect of, "Contains a minimum of 10% petroleum distillates". I
assumed that this was the solvent which carried the lemon oil.

After researching my previous question to the list of "does lemon oil cause
mildew?" I found that most lemon oils are mineral oil with added scent and
color. In disbelief I re-read both bottles of lemon oil and then resorted
to checking the MSDS. To my dismay the MSDS confirmed that a significant
portion (>90%) of "lemon oil" is just white mineral oil. I went on to
check the MSDS of some other wood oils (teak, watco, etc) most were a
mixture of mineral oil and mineral spirits. As I understand it woods like
teak are so dense that a thinner/solvent is helpful in carrying the oil
deeper into the wood pores. One exception is Danish Oil which has
polyurethane mixed in. An additional exception is any oil which is a
"drying oil" boiled linseed is one example and I think tung oil is another.

If anybody is "into" essential oils I'm planning to make my own wood polish
from mineral oil and tea tree oil. I might try adding lemon too. The tea
tree is evidently supposed to prevent mold and mildew.

Hey all,

I'm finishing a complete rewire of my 1976 C&C 30 mki. I've installed all new
low-draw LED lighting in the cabin. In most places the new wires are easy to
conceal as I'm just routing them where the old wires were. However, in the
head and in the V berth running the new wire between the cabin ceiling and the
deck appeared extremely difficult or impossible, so I opted to run the wire
behind the cabinetry and out along the joint of the bulkhead and the ceiling.

I am looking for a safe, flexible, and pleasing-looking conduit or cover for
wiring that my wife will approve of - not your standard black plastic marine
wire conduit. Home depot sells a few covers, but I'm wondering if anyone has
something they've used with success on a boat.

There are photos of the head and V-berth lighting/wiring in their current
unsecured and un-hidden state at the links below. Thanks in advance for any
help!

Mike,

I bet you can adjust that auto-dimming feature. I have a smaller unit (420) and
it allows for adjusting the screen brightness (and auto-dimming). If I recall
correctly, you press the power button (I think that the long press is off, so
the short press should bring you to the brightness menu, though it might be the
opposite) and you can adjust the brightness using the left-right panning
buttons. Try it on yours, but probably, you don’t want to do it coming into a
harbour at dusk.

Stus-List Fwd: Stainless steel name plates (46088)

2016-01-12 Thread Ken Heaton via CnC-List

Or if I could attach it, I didn't want to eat up his
bandwidth, so I didn't try.

 Hi Josh,
I  will try to get a quote for the stainless steel.  If
I can get it, what kind of stainless do you want?  The
choices will probably 308 or 316.  The 316 is more
corrosion resistant, harder to machine and more expensive.
I'm not an expert on this stuff (but I did stay at a

I need to know who is interested.  I suspect I can  have
them in about a week.  If there are similar nameplates for
other C&C models, I can entertain getting them as
well.  I don't know if I can get them in stainless
steel, but if possible it will be quite a bit more expensive
because of the small radii of some of the cuts.  A

I went with Paneltronics, a little cheaper than Blue Seas. Plus they had
the size I needed. I was also able to order the panels with all labels where I

Re: Stus-List Clean-looking wire conduit

2016-01-12 Thread Ryan Doyle via CnC-List
Wood... Of course! Thanks Gary. That will look far better than any
plastic cover.
Regarding the difference between my boat and yours - a previous owner
did an extensive interior renovation on my boat. They also swapped
out the portlights and put in large Lexan pieces - as you can see the
portlight trim is not original. So, while I'm not sure if they messed
with the head area,
my boat is definitely not a "standard" 1976 30-1.

--
Boy, there is a LOT of difference between a ’76 30-1 and my ’80. The
whole head sink area is different – sink, cabinet, etc.

Why not get a piece of wood and groove the backside and either paint
or varnish. I’m not aware of any conduit which is pretty.

Looking at both the Toronto based 44 and the Massachusetts based 44, one looks
the part of a pure racer and the other is far more cruiser friendly.

As my sailing buddy told me, there are two types of sailboats, the ones you sit
on and the ones you sit in. These two boats illustrate that point.

Hey all,

I'm finishing a complete rewire of my 1976 C&C 30 mki. I've installed all new
low-draw LED lighting in the cabin. In most places the new wires are easy to
conceal as I'm just routing them where the old wires were. However, in the

Re: Stus-List Refinish/repaint breaker panels?

2016-01-12 Thread Dennis C. via CnC-List
Joel,

My thoughts.

1. I built the AC and DC breaker panels for Touche' from scratch. I used
Ancor 8 gang panels and installed the breakers. They came out nice. Would
I do it again? NO! I'd buy the appropriate Blue Sea panel with everything
pre-wired. The only advantage I realized by building my own panels was
getting the exact size breakers I wanted for each circuit. What I lost was
all the nice indicator lights and buss bars, etc behind the panel.

2. By the time you disassemble the old panel, clean it up, paint it (or get
it powder coated) you will wish you'd bought a new Blue Sea pre-made panel.

I just saw Fred's reply which echoes my feelings.

The boat in the Kijiji ad has pipe berths and a dozen sails, and if the spec
sheet in the photo is accurate an 8’4” draft and exposed toilet in the sail
locket that takes up most of the bow. Probably a clapped out race boat.

The one on YW has a beautiful interior, a shoal keel with a big torpedo bulb,
looks like someone has lavished attention on her. Would make a really nice fast
cruising boat.

Two boats similar mostly in the model number only.

plate. There’s a lot more to them, like the backlighting and bus bars:

http://www.go2marine.com/item/115675/dc-16-position-circuit-breaker-panel-8377-blue-seas-8377.html

By the time you add all the backlighting, indicators and breakers to the bare
panel, you’re going to have spent a LOT more money...

2016-01-12 Thread Joel Aronson via CnC-List
Edd already has the Ray autopilot. I find Active Captain useful for
planning, but don't use it at the helm. That's just me.

B&G apparently is adding ethernet ports to their units which will make it
easier to integrate with PCs etc. NMEA 2000 makes stuff slightly less
proprietary, but you may not get full function on other brands products.

Joel,

I had the same problem with mine and years ago I pulled everything out (which
is also when I realized that a complete re-wire was in order) and sanded,
painted and added new labels. I will say this, it wasn’t really worth the
effort. Ergo why I ended up buying new Blue Sea panels. Cost and effort-wise it
just made more sense for me and it allowed for a future increase in the number
of breakers.

But then I had to redo the backing panel to make them fit. And re-arrange the
wiring. And upgrade the service to the panel. And then…

Maybe painting them isn’t such a bad thing after-all.

Re: Stus-List Raymarine e-Series Chartplotters/MFDs

2016-01-12 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
As a huge fan of Active Captain. I urge you to both try AC and verify that
your prospective chart plotter/MFD works with AC.

I too looked at the Raymarine MFDs and talked to one of their sales reps at
the Annapolis Boat show. I was disappointed with the lack of open source
compatability. It seemed like a collection of solid products that
integrate really well with one another to create a lot of powerful
features. Unfortunately, it appeared that a lot of those powerful features
where lost if the individual components were not matched with other
Raymarine products in the same vintage. So, as long as you buy the entire
package and plan to keep the entire package (auto-helm, chartplotter(s),
radar, network, remote apps via phone/tablet) together as a system (more or
less forever) then it will probably be fully satisfying.

My experiences with technology have been that anything proprietary
eventually goes out of style. I said this about the iPhone 30 pin
connector and now look at all the car stereos and home audio accessories
that no longer integrate as beautifully as they used to.

in MA……….same vintage for $119K……….might be worth a project , maybe even a

Re: Stus-List Raymarine e-Series Chartplotters/MFDs

2016-01-12 Thread Hoyt, Mike via CnC-List
Edd

We have a Garmin GPSMAP 740 at helm which has display size 6.0" x 3.6"; 7.0"
diagonal. I find it pretty easy to read and use as a chart. At nav station we
have a Raymarine A65 which has a 5.7 inch screen. I find the Raymarine screen
is difficult to use as a chart because of its smaller size. I think the next
size up Raymarine would be OK for that purpose based on my experience with the
larger Garmin. Both are same vintage

Hope this may be helpful

Oh. One other thing I noted. At helm our chartplotter has this useful feature
where it auto dims as daylight dwindles. This is great except for the fact
that I have eyes that auto dim as the years go on. Coming into a harbour at
dusk near shallow water having a screen dim suddenly makes it difficult (read
that as impossible) to read the depths on the display chart. This is somewhat
disconcerting. This was with the Garmin and at that point I deemed it best not
to fiddle with settings. Next time I will have a pair of reading cheater
glasses on hand as a flashlight is no good ….

Edd,
The 9" screen in the eS Series is dearer than the 7" screen but still worth
looking at for the reasons given by Fred. I'm going with the 7" version as I
set up "Sea Mistress" from scratch with a fully integrated Raymarine system.
Looked seriously at the 9" but I found the 7" screen to be more than acceptable
- same size as my Samsung phone which I have no trouble reading.
Hope that helps

Hi Josh,
I will try to get a quote for the stainless steel. If I can get it,
what kind of stainless do you want? The choices will probably 308 or 316.
