I flush an oxygenater tablet into the holding tank every few weeks. That has

Stus-List Water everywhere

2016-08-15 Thread Dennis C. via CnC-List
Perhaps you've seen the news about the flooding in south Louisiana. It's
been bad. Lots of folks flooded out. Lots of sad stories.

The water began to enter my neighborhood in Baton Rouge early yesterday
morning. The Admiral and I watched the water slowly rise in the street in
front of our house. It filled the street then crept over the sidewalk
inching its way toward the house. It stopped about 8 last night 20 inches
below the elevation of the house floor. We still have water in the street
but it's receding slowly. Others weren't so lucky.

Many of the Admiral's family and friends were flooded.

Roads are still closed. It will be days before many folks can return to
their homes to assess damage.

To make this sailing related, I keep Touche' sails in a commercial storage
nearby. The storage building is adjacent the bayou which backflowed into
our neighborhood. The Admiral and I went to the storage unit yesterday
morning to raise stuff off the floor. Touche's sails didn't get raised.
I'll go visit the storage later today. Hopefully it remained dry.
Otherwise I'll be drying sails all week and being grateful it's not
clothes, furniture and belongings.

Thoughts and prayers to all affected.

John — sorry for the delayed response, I was actually out sailing this weekend…
  :^)

Use the best sanitation-grade hose you can get; yes, they’re stiff, but
application of heat, either from careful use of a heat gun or very hot water,
can be used to get these hoses to bend enough for you to get them installed.
You only need a few feet of hose, so don’t let the per-foot cost keep you from
getting the good stuff.

BTW, my LF38 doesn’t have a nav-station; I’ve got the dual quarter-berth
version. So I’ve got a 35-gallon holding tank under the starboard quarter
berth. Nice to have the extra space.

HI Dave,

Not for nuthin' but, if you can hear the the vent, it is restricted and
won't be letting much air in unless there is a vacuum like the one
created by the pump. Mine was the same way when I bought my boat so I
added a second and enlarged the first using 1-1/8 SS thru hull fittings
and hose. was not that big a job. also the waste hose could be a big
source of smells from the system. I replaced all those as well. no
oder at all on our boat!

The larger vents and thru hull also allow me to flush the system at
pumpout with fresh water running into the system through the vent
opening and get the tank nice and clean.

Dave,

From what all the experts say, using quality hose and having proper
ventilation are main keys. A real eye opener for me was finding
a bug nest clogged air vent line, so at the very least check or
replace your vent line. To be honest, I cannot make any claims that
adding the
active ventilation fixed any problems as the system was be newly
installed so there was no problem to fix. But at such a small
cost ~$25, it was a no brainer to install a system which constantly
pumps fresh air into the holding tank. I thought briefly about
getting a
12V air pump, but if I were to make any changes it would be to plumb
the galley sink drain to the head inlet so that when I leave the boat
for an extended period,
the head inlet could easily be flush with fresh water. This
eliminate salt water organisms from the inlet line which die off in

the line and decay, without oxygen, anaerobically.

not a specific solution to any of your problems, but if you are dealing with
sanitation, Peggy Hall’s book (Get Rid of Boat Odors) is a very good read. It

Stus-List The Mariners' Museum Newport News, VA

2016-08-15 Thread Dreuge via CnC-List
Hi,

I’m spending much time in Newport News this fall for work related travel.
This weekend I decided to go to the local Mariners’ Museum to kill an hours or
so time. Surprisingly, I spent 5 hours there loving it.

First off, for all of August admission is only $1 (nice surprise getting back
$19 from a $20), but really well worth the usual full price.Yes, there are
plenty of well done historical exhibits ranging from the age of exploration up
to modern Navy ships. They have a nice section on the ironclad revolution which
replicas of the of the USS Monitor and CSS Virginia(aka Merrimack) include the
actual recovered USS Monitor on site. But all that aside, the sailor in me
was very impressed by modern exhibits like the "International Small Craft
Center” with many sailboats and the "Abandon Ship: Stories of Survival” with
many sailboat survival exhibits.

In fact going into the museum's bathrooms was a learning experience (see:

)

If you are anywhere within several hours drive, I highly recommend a visit to
this museum.

The best sailing version is the 6.5 Ft keel with carbon mast. The 5.5 Ft keel
moved center of mast aft and drags transom a bit requiring careful attention to
keeping weight forward if racing. Very nice boats. Build quality seems very
high. If you buy one you will not regret it

Stus-List Opinions about new headsail construction

2016-08-15 Thread Rick Brass via CnC-List
As I mentioned in an earlier post, I'm in the process of getting a new set
of sails for Imzadi. Thank you to the listers who recommended lofts and
commented on their experiences.

The specs for the new main are pretty well set. All the quotes so far have
recommended cross cut, loose foot, full batten sails (using my existing
Strong Track hardware), made from Challenge sailcloth.

But there seems to be a range of opinion about the 135% roller reefing
headsail. I'm looking for a 135% sail that can be reefed down to about 100%,
with a balance of durability and good performance - and performance is
probably worth some extra money to me. The quotes I've gotten all recommend
a cross-cut sail made from Challenge High Mass Fiber sailcloth between 8.88
and 9.1 oz.

I've always understood that tri-radial construction offered superior
performance and shape over cross-cut construction.

But one of the sailmakers has commented that both his cross-cut and
tri-radial headsails would be designed using the same (virtual) mold so
there would be little performance difference - not enough to justify the
increased cost for a cruising sail. A second sailmaker says the tri-radial
sail will "hold its shape better over the long term", but said the
significant increased cost (about 15% for tri-radial construction) make
cross-cut a better option.

So what is the experience (or opinion) of the list about the value of
tri-radial construction? Give me some guidance.

Re: Stus-List Opinions about new headsail construction

2016-08-15 Thread Dave Godwin via CnC-List
Rick,

Tri-Radials are just sexier.

There. I had to say it.

Seriously though, I’m a big fan of tri-radial sails. I have an old 140%
tri-radial on Ronin that has well withstood the test of time in terms of
keeping its shape and performance. It hasn’t been used for years and is in the
attic but if I were to bend it back on when she goes back in the water I would
not be displeased.

I look at the extra expense amortized over the life-time of the sail as opposed
to the initial cost and for me it’s worth the uptick.

I guess I would ask myself how much will it be up and sailing. If I were not
sailing constantly then I would think that a cross-cut sail will save me money
and give me a great sail for a long time. If I were sailing a lot and in
challenging conditions, then I would probably opt for the tri-radial.

OT: Interesting choice of a 135%. When Ronin goes back in the water I’m
probably going to go with a 110% max. After wrestling with the 140% it will be
a relief. Our racing-style days are over with.

Stus-List Bow Pulpit Repair

2016-08-15 Thread Dave via CnC-List
While docking on a windy day I managed to bend my pulpit. The only thing
obvious is that the life lines are slack (more than the threaded adjustments
are capable of adjusting for) but, the bent pulpit is still "somewhat"
symmetrical. So, at a minimum I need to bend it "forward", bend the uprights
forward relative to the base. While there is a lot of information from a lot of
folks about how to repair the bent pulpit, I can't find any dimensional
information about the pulpit to see where I need to bend it back to.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Re: Stus-List Blog post on my excellent day buying Jacklines.

A couple of tips: Jacklines should be twisted so they don't lie flat on the
deck. Makes them easier to pick up. And they should be as tight as practical;
if they're loose, they will tend to bind as your carabiner runs along them.

I know others twist them but to me they are more of a tripping hazard when
twisted and not in use.

My 2 cents
