If the boom is to the left, the sheet is coming out the wrong side of the
sheave.

Stus-List Mainsheet chafes

2016-10-08 Thread Brian Fry via CnC-List
In all pictures the goose neck is to the right.
In one I removed the device from the boom and you can see the device is
incapable of being reversed.(that was my first thought and the reason for
removing it).
I guess there are only 2 possibilities left: either the sheet or the sheave
are too big, or both. Does anyone have the same setup and can measure the
gap of the exit hole on the aft end?

Re: Stus-List CnC-List Digest, Vol 129, Issue 24

2016-10-08 Thread Francois Rivard via CnC-List
I agree with Tom:

"The black smoke may indicate excessive carbon buildup. If you don't have
three hours to run it is, next time you bring her in while the engine is
still running out it in neutral and run it up to 90% of max RPM for about 5
minutes.

Tom Buscaglia
S/V Alera"

The combination of doing this, using Diesel Kleen Cetane+ Fuel additive,
and motoring with engine at 100% throttle for about 20-25 minutes several
times a month has turned my engine from a "Hard Starter" to one that
fires-up within about 2-3 seconds every time.

The skeptics can refer to both section 2-4-1 of the Yanmar service manual
and section 7-4 of the Yanmar Operation Manual as say the same thing:

Stoping procedure

1-a) Place the clutch handle in "Neutral" position and let the engine idle
for about 5 minutes.

Important note: If the engine is stopped suddenly while at high
temperature, the temperature of various parts will increase. This may
result in engine trouble

1-b) After five minutes idling place the speed control lever in the "Full"
position to raise RPMS to about 36000 to blow out any burnt gas in the
cylinder

1-c) set he engine to the lowest speed (850-900 rpm), cut the fuel, and
stop the engine.

My 1991 37+ looks the same. The fine trim jams the mainsheet into the slot
that is screwed into the boom. I haven’t noticed any chafing but I don’t use
the fine trim.

I believe I posted about this before but I have some more info.
I have a 37/40xl. 1993.
Where the mainsheet enters the boom there is chafing. It appears to be
happening because of the angle going into the sheave block that is screwed into
the boom.
As far as I know there are no modifications to the boom or traveler. Can anyone
show what theirs looks like?

Re: Stus-List Yanmar diesel

2016-10-08 Thread Jake Brodersen via CnC-List
Tom,

Running a diesel like that under no-load conditions won’t help it much.
Running it at the slip in gear would provide some load to the engine and be
more beneficial. We usually have a 45 to 60 minute motor to the race course,
which helps keep the engine in top shape. I usually set it at 2,800 rpm and
keep it there. Always idle it for a few minutes before shutdown too. This
will help cool down the internal parts before you shut it down.

We have our “big boat” in the same marina as Steve’s 36. For the most part,
everyone fared well (from the videos our dockmate sent). A couple boats on D
dock came loose but not lost, Steve. A lot of torn canvas on the power boats
and popped dock cleats, but from what we hear, that's about it. Not bad for 85+
winds. :-)

Thanks Randy. My boat survived undamaged according to my neighbour at the
marina. He said that the docks were damaged but did not elaborate. I am in
Canada, so no personal risk, just 4 months of labour and many boat bucks. The
closest NOAA weather device measured a maximum of "only" 60 knots, although the
