Hi Kevin,

Did you use the SS cinch clamps and what kind of fittings, or just the John
Guest fittings. I watched a professional Plumber with an expansion tool slip
this plastic collar over a fitting once, very quick and secure, and a much
smaller installation than most of the Guest fittings. He used a simple big
hand powered expander, hum like this one
http://www.supplyhouse.com/Wirsbo-Uponor-Q6295075-ProPEX-Hand-Expander-Tool-with-1-23-41-heads-2412000-p

I was impressed. I’m still watching and learning, but it looks like I could
rent a tool and do a lot in a weekend, maybe. . .

Cheers, Lee

Hi Edd...I replaced all my freshwater tubing, galley fawcet, water tank fill
and vent hoses on Alegria last winter.  I used Whale systems 15mm tubing in red
and blue.  This entailed pulling all three water tanks (so as long as I had
them out the fill and vent hoses seemed logical).  I also added a air tank and
rebuilt the manifold.  For that I used PVC connectors and valves... that worked
best to eliminate air lesks. The biggest problem was finding the precise
connectors to work everywhere...BSP, tapered pipe, 3/4" at the water
heater.But, all is working now.  Quite a project.Spencer Johnson '84 LF38

Stus-List Dodger and bimini...or a windshield?

2017-01-11 Thread Dennis C. via CnC-List
Here's a bit of a different take on dodger/bimini installs.

Granted, my canvas needs "down south" are different than many of you
listers further north. Our main concern is shade, not wind/cold
protection. Further, since we sometimes race, having a hard frame dodger
just didn't work for us.

With the end boom traveler, Touche' has two biminis, a large forward bimini
that extends over the seahood and a smaller aft bimini. A filler piece
connects them when we want additional shade.

However, for the occasional spring or fall cruise or transit down the
coast, we wanted wind protection. The rest of the time we want
unobstructed breeze through the cockpit.

So, I had one of my canvas maker buddies make me a windshield. A
windshield is different from a dodger.

The windshield attaches to the forward bimini by a zipper across the top
and the leading edge of the bimini. It wraps around the bimini frame
almost to the primary winches. The sides and bottom are simply attached
with small lines through grommets in the windshield. There are two eye
straps on the deck adjacent the seahood for holding it down. The remainder
of the small lines simply tie around the bows of the bimini and the
handrails. The center portion zips and rolls up for breeze when we want it.

I can install and uninstall the thing in 5-10 minutes. It rolls up easily
and is stored in the quarterberth.

Granted, it isn't as nice as a dodger with support frame but for the few
times a year we use it, it satisfies our needs.

Paul,

We have had a Bimini and dodger made for our C&C 33-II by Sportech Sails -
http://www.sportechsails.com/index.php?p=Home

Had them a couple of years, then had a full enclosure added last year – I gave
Jamie a challenge – no additional fittings on the deck beyond what we had for
the dodger & Bimini. I did eventually allow 2 on the side of the winch
mouldings where the panels turn out ward. We are delighted with the results.

Jamie has joined a number of other local marine retailers I know and is not
usually at the Toronto Boat Show.

Hi all,
After a few years of cruising Lake Ontario and the 1000 Islands in the St.
Lawrence River I'm planning on some extended cruising next season, maybe to end
up where winter doesn't suck.
My old 33 MKI is naked - no dodger and no bimini, and while I love that, let's
face it, some shelter from wind/rain/sun would be damned nice, and this spring
I'm going to bite the bullet and do it.
I would really love some opinions (and pictures?) of some designs and "dos and
don'ts" for dodger design.
Resolute has the traveller just aft of the companionway, which will be a bit of
a pain for dodger design, but I'm not moving it (it's a newish traveller, and
really really nice!).
My main concerns in the dodger design are how to handle the slope of the cabin
top (so it looks ok) and to keep things so that the lines are clear to the
winches with room for cranking. I could deal with a dodger being in the way of
the more forward winches and just use the aft ones when the dodger's "trailing
wings" are pulled back.
Last season I worked out the height - a bit lower than the boom will let me
look through it when sitting and look over when standing (in the picture that's
my son who is a bit taller than me!)

I appreciate any comments, especially those which explain what you feel like
are mistakes on your own dodger! (and any and all pics of a 33 MKI dodger
appreciated VERY much!)
Cheers!

I saw that this morning too. I wouldn't say it looks sketchy necessarily,
just your typical bought-at-auction project boat. Transients were living on
it for a couple years, and the engine might be shot. It's sad what ends up
happening to good boats sometimes.

The latest pictures he posted (open them full size in a new tab) are pretty
interesting / informative. I haven't seen many of those bulkhead cutouts
(windows) from the galley to aft qtrberth.

Genco made a dodger and bimini for my 29 mk 2 last year. The dodger design is
great. It is built with fixed supports from the coaming to the dodger frame.
The dodger sides are completely removable and in fair weather it becomes a mini
bimini over the companionway. The front window, corner windows and side windows
can be zipped in any combination. With the front and corner panels installed,
you have complete access to the foreward winches. As other have commented, I
shifted the mainsheet bale about 1 foot aft to clear the back of the dodger.
Very happy with their work.

Did you remove all the original Polybutylene (PB) / (Qest) pipe and
fittings? There is no need to remove it if it works you just need an
adapter. 3/8ths PB might look like it fits PEX push or crimp fittings but
it will almost certainly leak.

The typical pex pipe comes in 1/2" but 3/8ths is more than big enough.

After doing my own repairs throughout the freshwater system I've found one
of the best systems for connecting multiple types of tubing.

We did that trip in 2014/15. Before we left I had Genco fabricate and install
a dodger/bimini/enclosure. I am very please with their work. Side panels are
removal or can be rolled up and they have screens. If you are going the same
route as me (out the St. Lawrence) you’ll want a full enclosure. To see some
pics look at my website www.persuasion37.com. My traveller is on the coach
roof so not quite the same. Give Genco a call they probably have pictures on
file and you might even get show pricing

Persistence has a very nice dodger and bimini design. A number of the concerns
you have stated have been addressed. The dodger has zip out side panes which
make winch access for primaries excellent. Also our traveler is on bridge deck
just aft of companionway (same as 33 mk II). The boom bail is moved aft approx
10 inches to account for this. Another option would be to have a dodger frame
that does not come as far back.

Dodgers are generally a pain for "looking through" compared to no dodger but
when cruising a dodger and bimini are very nice. Be sure you get an extension
piece that you can zip in to join dodger and bimini for when at anchor or under
motor in the rain.

I can send pictures when get access to them later this week

Note that Persistence is not a 33 mk 1 but as a Frers 33 is very similar
cockpit and coachroof layout to 33 mk 2

2017-01-11 Thread Kevin Paxton via CnC-List
Hey Edd,
I did mine this past season on my 34. It was fairly straightforward after
all the planning. I bought everything through Freshwatersystems.com. They
had the most complete selection of SeaTech and PEX that I could find.
Unfortunately the PEX tubing comes in rolls which made it a little bit more
difficult than what straight pieces might gain you.

They say PEX is flexible and can make somewhat tight turns, but I stuck to
just using elbows for most everything. They have clips that are supposed to
bend the tubing for a 90* turn at a safe radius, but those things were
fairly flimsy. The biggest pain I had was trying to screw in the mounts for
the tubing to secure it. I used the 1/2" CTS 35 series fittings with collet
clips. They had the right size for just about all of the faucets and
connections that I needed. I had to connect to my poly tank, water pump,
galley sink faucet, fresh water foot pump, water heater, external hose
inlet, and head faucet.

Let me know if you have any other questions.
