Stus-List 81' C&C 30 - removed a winch, filling deck holes for winter

2017-10-27 Thread Chris Hobson via CnC-List
In an effort to reduce constant dripping from a neglected winch fastened to my
deck support along-side the mast (common on the 80’ MK2) I removed it, cleaned
with Acetone and filled the holes with Life Caulk. That way my settee below
doesn’t get soaked each rainfall during our Vancouver winter. In hindsight I
realize you can’t paint silicone and that clear Life Caulk doesn’t match the
deck. So is it better to do a job like this with epoxy? I.E. dig out the old
silicone and replace with epoxy that matches the deck color (in spring of
course)? I used what I had.

The actual core along these deck supports on either side need to be cut out and
replaced, but presentation is everything until I can get to that list item.

Re: Stus-List CnC-List Digest, Vol 141, Issue 130

2017-10-27 Thread Gary Russell via CnC-List
Hi Rich,
While I agree that mounting the ram to a shelf on the hull is the
traditional way to do it (C&C does it that way), I like my design better
because it reduces the lateral force on the hull to almost zero and reduces
the chance of the shelf ripping loose. There is a sheer force on the hull,
but it's about 25% of the total ram force and the joint will be stronger in
sheer as well.
Some people connect the ram to the rudder quadrant, but in discussions
with Rob Ball (C&C designer of the 37+) he says that's a very bad idea,
because the quadrant isn't strong enough and if the quadrant fails, you
lose all steering. It's also very hard to keep the ram dry (corrosion).
My 2 cents...

2017-10-27 Thread Danny Haughey via CnC-List
I just saw a very short interview with the women on the news.  Apparently, they
were swamped in a storm that washed the engine and damaged the rig.  No more
info than that.   Although, both women looked healthy and not very distressed.
They were found 900 miles off Japan.
one statement I found really puzzling.  She said she was sure they would have
died in the next 24 hours.  But they weren't emaciated at all.  You'd think of
they were afraid of running out of food they would be rationing and very thin.
My guess is they were writing their book and maybe embellishing the situation a
bit.  That's a terrible thing to say isn't it?  Lol

Yes, but the report in the UK Mail says that they had a mast problem, and could
sail at 4-5 knots. I don’t see why that is a problem.  The real question is now
they got “lost”.  Did they have no navigational capability?  No solar or wind
power?  Also, they lost their cell phone overboard the first day.  What use is
a cell phone in the Pacific Ocean?  Lots more to hear on this one.  Dave

I’ve installed both Ray electric ram and a hydraulic. The hydraulic is
slightly more resistance as Gary describes, but the advantage of significant
less amp draw far outweighs this.

No matter which brand autopilot you use (mine is B

units have far too much drag and ruin the feel of the rudder.

FWIW, I signed on to having all the rod replaced on our 37’. I received a
quote, and I’m guestimating the labor costs because we are doing everything
rigging/lifeline related, that came in at around $9,000.00 to $9,500.00.

Hope that’s a good reference.

Hi Jim

I had Blackline do mine in 2010. I replaced the rod with wire. They also
installed radar on the mast, replaced corroded spreader tips, etc. Cost was
close to $6,800 minus taxes.

Cheap compared to the cost of the new motor I'm in the process of putting in.

By the way, we followed your model more or less on the installation of our
windlass. That was a great help to see your installation. Didn't use it a lot
this summer but it always worked well. Such a joy.

Andrew, you're right, I want to pull the mast so I can take the collar off the
deck, fix some voids, and rebed it, plus change all the fixtures and the
wiring, and add spreader boots. Elkhide sounds good, I'll have to see if I can

That brings up another thought, I'll start a separate thread for that.

2017-10-27 Thread Ron Ricci via CnC-List
Doug,

I “copied” Gary’s design and am happy with the results. My rudder shaft did
not have a keyway (Gary’s had one) so I ended up having to drill a 3/8” hole
through a 3” stainless steel tube with ½” thick walls. Edson makes an
appropriate tiller arm with a 3/8” hole pre-drilled. I used a drill bushing to
start with a 1/8” pilot hole. If you end up having to drill your shaft, let me
know. I have a drill bushing

Gary,

Did you just use the key-way or did you drill through the rudder post as
well?  I really like how you installed it all at home and then just
glassed in the shelf!

Re: Stus-List CnC-List Digest, Vol 141, Issue 120

2017-10-27 Thread Robert Wooden via CnC-List
Hi Kyle,

I have a C&C 27 that I have sailed on-and-off for several years (life and
work keep getting in the way).

I have had a single burner propane "swing stove" for several years. I tried
to fine one like mine online but don't see the exact unit. The first link
takes you to one that is available that is close. I think I had the older
model, see the second link. I often cook one pot meals on it on overnight
sails. I bolted the bracket where I can use the stove under the
companionway sliding hatch, hatch open in nice weather or closed when foul.
I lift the stove off and store it when not in use.

Hello everyone...new owner of a 1977 C&C 26. I have owned a Bayliner
sailboat and still have a Catalina 25. Really excited about this C&C, but
I?m working on where to install a stove. I?m located in Washington State and
coffee is a must. I mostly prepare food on a grill in the cockpit. So I
could use a single burner. Just looking for advice and ideas.

The boat has never had a name and I?m considering using my first grandson?s
name, Killian.

This virtual C&C community has existed for over 20 years. Many of us have
escaped the list's cyber boundaries and meet in the "real" world.

What Bill didn't mention was that Sailnet wanted to charge an ongoing fee
to all of us. We would also be subject to their advertisements and any
future fee increases. After we set up a Yahoo Groups, we found it lacking.

Stu stepped up to the plate and offered to maintain what we now call Stu's
List. One of the promises Stu made was "no advertising, ever". We like
that. It is a community list. Although Stu diligently maintains it, we all
feel a deep sense of community and semi-ownership. Although Stu is the
"official head knocker in charge", we choose to believe this list is "ours".

Not only does this resource make our boats more valuable, the cumulative $$
and aggravation savings are large. Benefiting from the been there, done
that of this list is very valuable. The combined experience of our members
cover all aspects of our boats; rigging, tuning, structural repairs,
engines, electrical and electronics.

Well worth throwing a few bucks at Stu. IMHO, if there is an excess, I
believe Stu will inform us and apply it to next year's expenses. I, like
others, think that if Stu chooses to accept an annual "bonus" of a bottle or
two of some fine adult beverage, that's good by me. He deserves it.

Enough about this. Send $$$.

Stus-List Jib trade?

2017-10-27 Thread Brian Fry via CnC-List
I have a 37/40 xl. We have a racing jib on board that we are considering
cutting and modifying for a cruiser friendly jib. It has battn pockets ( no
battens) and goes all the way to the deck. No uv fabric. It has only been
used 2 seasons so is in good shape.
Anyone have a cruising jib to trade?
Just looking to swap for a jib with uv cover and reefing points.
