Re: Stus-List New water storage tanks

2017-11-03 Thread Rick Brass via CnC-List
Ronco Plastics had a tank that was an almost exact duplicate of the cracked
Kracor tanks on my 38, at a cost of about $400 per tank. If you know the
dimensions of your aluminum tanks you may be able to buy an exact (or close)
size from them.

After talking to Dennis C about his installation, I decided to use Plastimo
bladder tanks ($139 at West for the 26 gallon size, with no shipping cost for
store pickup). I’ll put the bladders into the old Kracor tanks (after removing
the top of the old tank) to avoid any chance of chafe as the tanks move in
response to the motion/heel of the boat. Low cost, simple installation,
effective, and allows me to plug the old vent fittings under the toe rail of
the boat – which can be a source of contamination of the water and of leaks.

FWIW, the 35 gallon IMTRA-Nuata bladder tanks (nitrile rubber instead of PVC)
are about $300 at West Marine (actually less than if you buy them direct from
the manufacturer), and look to be of more durable construction than the
Plastimo tanks

Hi guys,

I've been researching new water storage tanks for my boat.

The current ones are aluminum, leaking and well past their life expectancy.
Here is what I've come up with.

so, I think these are all I've worked on;

aluminum for about $700ea w/ shipping 70lbs
Pros are weight, direct replacement, not too expensive
Cons are corrosion, taste, poor reaction to chlorine

SS about $800ea w/shipping 150lbs
Pros are direct replacment, food grade, non corrosive, no chlorine
issue, no real taste issue
Cons are weight

Bladder about $220 ea w/shipping super light
Pros are pretty easy install, food grade PVC, no chlorine or taste
issues, easily replaceable cost effectively, less than 1/2 the cost of
next cheapest option
Cons are some space modification to utilize full capacity.

Custom Poly too expensive to consider

Custom Bladder too expensive to consider

Thats about all I can come up with

any comments from you guys?

Re: Stus-List How long do zincs last?

2017-11-03 Thread Rick Brass via CnC-List
Imzadi has 2 Camp zincs on the prop shaft (whacked good, but no TefGel) and
spends most of her time in the slip not connected to shore power. I end up
replacing zincs about every two years; sometimes one of the two is more eroded
than the other, and the better one will last for another year. I would not
presume that your performance after 18 months is all that unusual, especially
if there is little stray current on the docks and you have an isolator.

I replace the pencil zinc in the heat exchanger when I change the oil and
filter, which works out to be about every year with typical boat usage of about
100 hours per year. Smaller zinc, and I’m mostly in brackish water.

Recent thread gave replies of 3-8 months. I dove Touche' yesterday to change
the zincs and found the prop zincs were only about 20% sacrificed. Best I
recall, those zincs have been on the shaft for about 18 months.

On the other hand, I seem to go through engine heat exchanger zincs about every
6 months. Go figure.

I would go stainless but I don't like the idea of lugging 150lb tanks up a
