I am in the process of replacing my Yanmar mixing elbow on our 3HM motor.
Does anyone have any experience with the stainless replacements being
offered by HDI marine out of Vancouver Wa.? The price looks to be a little
less and they look good on the website.

Re: Stus-List Diesel tank

2017-11-09 Thread Rick Brass via CnC-List
I also replaced my 35 year old diesel tank during a refit in 2009-2010. Same
cause of failure - pinholes in the bottom because of moisture collecting
between tank and wood platform. The seepage caused a bit of lingering diesel
smell in the boat, and I was unable to find any leaks that would explain the
smell. At least until I removed the tank.

I was able to get a new tank made and increase from 20 to 22 gallons. Cost
was more reasonable than yours, but then it was 7 years ago, I'm doing the
work in rural North Carolina, and paying is $US.

When I reinstalled the tank, I put 6 nitrile pads between it and the wood
platform to allow air to circulate. They are 6x6 (150mm?) by 1/8" thick
rubber sheets available at the local hardware store and used to make
plumbing gaskets. Just bought some more to use as cushioning gaskets for
another project and they were $1.59 at Lowes.

Based on our similar experiences, owners of older boats with persistent
diesel smell from an unknown source might want to check the bottom of their
fuel tank.

No opinion on the hoses.simply don't know.

However, a few weeks ago, I also removed my 33 years old aluminum fuel
tank.there was a pin hole in the bottom where the tank sits on the
wooden platform. Took it to a local machine shop for their inspection and
input. They are in the process of welding a new bottom on the tank..the
rest of the tank is fine.

I too had a difficult time getting the tank out of the locker..the same
issue.the inlet fitting was approx. 1/4" too high so I tapped the top of
it down and squeezed it out.

Told the machine shop about the difficulty removing stating that any repair
could not make it bigger otherwise I would not get it back in through the
locker. They said "no problem, when we cut the bottom off and weld a new
one on, the tank will be 'one inch' smaller, from 12" to 11"..you will
loose approx. 1.5 gallons volume in the tank".

My response was do it..I don't really care if the tank holds 20 gallons
or 18 gals. as long as it has been adequately repaired and I can get it back
in without all the hassles of a new tank and assembling and installing the
fittings.

Talked to the machine shop yesterday..they said the tank will be ready
maybe Thursdayfinishing the welding today and then will pressure test
it. They said the tank, after they cut the bottom off, was a like new
condition, a little dirty but no signs of corrosion anywhere. They said the
pin hole started on the outside where it sat on the wooden
platform..water got between the tank and the wood and the action of
electrolysis caused the corrosion from the outside in. They are going to
attach something to the bottom to keep this from happening again (as if I
will worry about it at my age (66) happening again! Cost will be in the
$400 range for the repair.

FYI for anyone else thinking about this.

Well, you should be using only SAE fuel hose. And the specs are the same
regardless of the manufacturer. So use whatever is less expensive.

You might even get a price on hose - probably Gates Rubber - from your local
NAPA store. Since it's not "Boat Hose" it's probably significantly less than
either WM or Defender.

Non-marine hose may well work to keep fuel inside of itself, but auto hose in
general isn't even close to the fire resistance of marine hose. Airplane hoses
have fire-sleeves over them and marine hose is about 3-4 times as thick as it
needs to be so there is a lot of rubber to burn away before it would have a
hole in it. Auto hose has neither.

Stus-List Mooring Rights -- Any "Sea Lawyers" on the List?

2017-11-09 Thread Edd Schillay via CnC-List
Listers,

Looking for some advice/experience on this non-C&C issue:

As most of you know, I hauled the Enterprise for the winter about a month ago.
The company that winterizes moorings has informed me this morning that a boat
(no mast) has been on my mooring for a few weeks now (without my permission or
knowledge.)

The mooring is owned by me. Same with the mooring ball and gear. There is
nothing that is attached to this mystery boat that can be considered club owned
or public domain.

I have reached out to the club to see if they know anything about it, but no
response. My club is very loose when it comes to people’s property and rights.

Anyone have any suggestions on what my next steps would be? TowBoat US doesn’t
seem to want to touch it. Do I call the police? What would they do? What can I
do? I’m under the impression that this falls under theft and trespassing.

Any thoughts?

2017-11-09 Thread Della Barba, Joe via CnC-List
This is kind of tricky.
If you just untie the boat, you can be liable for it and anything it hits.
If you leave the boat, you might be liable if your mooring lets go or they try
and pretend it did.
If they are there for a long time, they might try and make like they own the
mooring.
The boat could sink and drag your mooring down with it.
First people I would call are your DNR police or whatever you call the water
cops there.
I would also leave a note on the boat.
If none of that works, midnight relocation to a marina or ??

When I caught someone on my mooring they tried to tell ME to go find another
one. We told them they had 5 minutes before we boarded and cut them loose. That
was plenty of time for him and his girlfriend to put their clothes back on,
aided by our spotlights LOL

Re: Stus-List Mooring Rights -- Any "Sea Lawyers" on the List?

2017-11-09 Thread Chuck Gilchrest via CnC-List
Edd,

Just so you know, you only own the tackle, not the actual “mooring” or space
underwater in which your gear is located. As I understand the law, if it is a
navigable waterway, ultimately the Army Corps of Engineers has final
jurisdiction.

Is the mooring field in any way regulated by the town, city, or county in which
the mooring is located? I’m assuming there’s no harbormaster or else that
would have been your first call. In most municipalities having public mooring
fields, you likely pay a waterways fee or some other fee to a regulating
authority, especially if you own your mooring tackle. Sometimes the State EPA
has some oversight of waterway use. New York State Marine Police would be the
next option if the city has no regulatory options for the harbor. If you get
no satisfaction from them, you can simply remove the boat from the mooring and
let Mother Nature sort it out.

Lastly, you could call the Coast Guard and claim that there was a derelict
vessel adrift and you prevented damaging other boats by putting it on your
mooring. Then ask them to retrieve it..

Do you pull out your mooring tackle at the end of the season to prevent damage
from freezing etc?

If you replace your top gear with a winter stick, I would do that at your
soonest possible time to prevent mooring poachers from latching on to your
mooring moving forward.

Does the boat have a current registration? Your state Marine Board should
be able to tell you who the owner is, and how to get in touch with
him/her. In Portland, there are some homeless people who live on run down

stolen boat. Good luck.

First, I'd search the laws and regulations concerning that particular
mooring field. What documents do you have concerning your right to your
gear and that location, i.e. permits, etc.? Like this:

http://codes.findlaw.com/ny/navigation-law/nav-sect-46-a.html

Once you determine what your rights are and have located and re-read your
permitting documents, call the public safety department which has
jurisdiction over the mooring field.

The bad news is you may have to start an eviction process which may take
several weeks. The good news, you don't need the mooring for several
months.

Thanks to all for the comments and local/national laws.

Update: I finally heard back from a Moorings and Ways Chairman, who said that
the boat was supposed to be on someone else’s mooring, not mine. The are
reaching out to the owner of the other mooring and will relocate the boat ASAP.

If it’s not gone by Monday morning, I’ll contact the coast guard and cops.

All the best,

Stus-List New Owner of C&C 29 Mk I and Datamarine

2017-11-09 Thread JAN MAGEE via CnC-List
Hello,This is my first post to the list.  I have been following for a while
after purchasing a 1979 C&C 29 Mark I  hull #658 with a Yanmar 2QM15 last year.

The boat was on the hard close to the Welland Canal not far from the original
C&C plant in Virgil (given the CCY on the HIN, I think that is where she was
built - please correct me if I am wrong).
I had a pre-purchase survey done with the surveyor spending 4 hours going over
the boat.  Although his report indicated no major issues, several critical ones
were overlooked resulting in an unplanned busy year of repair work. Too bad I
did not know about this amazing community of C&C owners at that time!  Luckily
my past experience building a couple of boats using the West System helped.  On
the other hand, doing a lot of the work with only battery powered tools due to
extra high water levels on Lake Ontario this year was tedious and slow.
Walking down the dock covered in 18" of water provides an interesting
perspective on moored boats and some very creative boarding solutions.

Major projects to date include:
- rehab the Harken Unit 0 furler - now affectionately known as the
Franken-Furler- re-wiring the mast including installation of conduit-
replacement of transverse floor rib at the aft end of the keel (it was rotten
through to the outboard ends and totally missed by the surveyor)- replacement
of fuel tank support (rotten on port side - and also missed by surveyor)-
replaced cockpit drain hoses- removed, cleaned and re-plumbed water tank since
it had to come out to permit the rib repair- replaced head pump- and then the
endless list of ongoing maintenance and improvement activities that make the
boat your own.

About me - A life long sailor, club-racer for many years (crewing on a Mirage
30 and then skippering my own Tanzer 26) out of Highland Yacht Club, and
managed to bring home some hardware in the process. 12 years ago we sold the
Tanzer to spend time with our 2 sons and their activities which thankfully also
included sailing (2 Lasers I and II, plus an Access 2.3 dinghy now grace the
garage).  My younger son has cerebral palsy and is wheelchair bound, but the
Access is a design wonder and he can skipper that himself).

In 2016 while my father was in palliative care for 9 months it got me thinking
- "If that was me, and I had not got back into sailing, I would hate myself".
I'd been "looking" (not seriously) for years anyway, so whether mid-life crisis
or something else, the task was taken on in earnest.  With an appreciation for
beautiful, well designed and well built boats it had to be a C&C and the 29 Mk
I was it.  Have had countless comments "THAT is a nice looking boat" mostly at
launch and haulout as it flies past suspended from the crane.
Originally named Caveat, then Dulas Buoys (don't ask), she is now BOOMERANG -
because we came back.

On the Datamarine side, there is currently a Link 5000 system on the boat which
I'd like to keep if possible as it suits the vintage.  However the 550 Remote
unit is not working and the mast head unit is missing the entire wind speed
unit (not just the cups).  The round-trip cost to send it to DMI for repair
plus duty and exchange is ugly.  Have been scanning the online garage sales but
no luck so far.  If anyone has any of this gear that they've replaced with
something else but is still serviceable can you please let me know.  Else I'll
be visiting the Toronto Boat Show in the new year to replace the entire rig.

Glad to be a part of the C&C legacy and I like your style as a community.  The
right mix of experience, sharing, humor and seriousness.

Re: Stus-List Anchor advice - Rocna or Mantus

2017-11-09 Thread Dreuge via CnC-List
Doug,

I recently gone through the same process. I think both the Rocna and the
Mantus are great anchors. I ended up getting a Vulcan which is made by the
Rocna folks. If I could choose over again, I would still choose the Vulcan.
Best setting and holding anchor I have ever used. That said, I have thought
about getting a large Mantus as a back up cruising anchor as it can be
disassembled, stored, and forgotten until needed.

That boat had been listed there all year with bi-monthly price drops as the

On the plus side it is a 35 Mk1 (not a Mk2 as stated in the ad) but the

The price is cheap but it is someone else's work in progress.

Re: Stus-List Diesel tank hoses

2017-11-09 Thread Rick Brass via CnC-List
I never suggested using automotive hose for a boat fuel system. Rather, I
said there were other places to buy suitable hose, including an auto parts
store.

46CFR Chapter I, Subchapter T, part 182.720E requires that flexible fuel
hose used in construction of small passenger vessels meets the requirement
of SAE J-1942. J-1942 is essentially SAE J30R2 hydraulic hose with a higher
melting point.

Gates C5M hose meets these requirements. Trident does not offer a hose in
their catalog that does.

USCG requirements for fuel hose used in small recreational vessels have USCG
standards A1 and A2, both of which are met by SAE J-1527 (which is similar
to ABYC H-33). Trident fuel hoses all meet J-1527. A number of automotive
hose providers - including Goodyear - offer J-1527 hose.

Remember SAE stands for Society of Automotive Engineers. Manufacturers who
cater to automotive markets have higher production volumes and economies of
scale (and maybe scope) vs. marine product manufacturers. And the auto parts
market is a lot more competitive than the boat parts market.

So pick your poison: J-1527 or the commercial J-1942 hose. And then check to
see how inexpensively you can get the hose from multiple sources.

BTW, Joe, fuel hose on aircraft just has to be "suitable" for the
application, but the requirement for the fire sleeve is in 14CFR!,C,23,e.

Non-marine hose may well work to keep fuel inside of itself, but auto hose
in general isn't even close to the fire resistance of marine hose. Airplane
hoses have fire-sleeves over them and marine hose is about 3-4 times as
thick as it needs to be so there is a lot of rubber to burn away before it
would have a hole in it. Auto hose has neither.

Removed my OEM aluminum diesel tank now 35 years old. Exterior looks great
but interior shows a number of corrosion issues. Had to remove fittings and
saw off the inlet fitting to get the tank out of the locker so was committed
when I did that to getting a new tank. That said, the hidden corrosion on
the interior tells me an incident was in the making so replacing now is a
good idea.

Have replacement aluminum tank made by Luther's in Bristol RI who by all
accounts are the "go to" source for a tank made right in all respects. Not
the least expensive by any stretch but by far the best value or so they say
:)

Question is replacing the hoses. West carries the Shields brand, Defender
the Trident at a cost differential of some 20% less in price.
Specifications are essentially identical. Any reason to not embrace the
lower price??

Edd, I hate to say it but you’re involved in a bucket of s … well, let’s say a
can of worms.

Some states have abandoned and derelict boat laws, most don’t seem to. And
local laws are sometimes conflicting and hard to find. (For example, the local
regulations in New Bern, NC are part of the local zoning code and Oriental, NC
– where there are more sailboats than people – has no regulation at all.) I
wouldn’t expect too much from the USCG because they seem to be pretty
disinterested unless the offending boat is a hazard to navigation. I’m rapidly
gaining expertise on this because of growing problems we’re having in the
harbor an Washington, NC, where I manage the municipal marina.

In North Carolina you can send a registered letter to the last owner of record
for the offending boat. If he doesn’t claim the letter in 30 days, or if he
gets the letter but does nothing, you can go to the State and apply for title
to the vessel, which takes another couple of weeks. Then you can move, sell,
dispose of, or scrap the boat because it is yours.

I’d start by contacting the state agency that handles registration of boats in
the state where the boat is currently. They can tell you what your options are.

First, I'd search the laws and regulations concerning that particular mooring
field. What documents do you have concerning your right to your gear and that
location, i.e. permits, etc.? Like this:

http://codes.findlaw.com/ny/navigation-law/nav-sect-46-a.html

Once you determine what your rights are and have located and re-read your
permitting documents, call the public safety department which has jurisdiction
over the mooring field.

The bad news is you may have to start an eviction process which may take
several weeks. The good news, you don't need the mooring for several months.

All the best,

Edd
