Re: Stus-List CO detector choices

2017-11-27 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
We use Altair atmospheric monitors to detect bad air in confined spaces
where I work. The CO sensor is identified as being cross sensitive by the
manufacturer and we've seen this occur during use. In fact we have been
able to detect hydrogen leaks from compressed gas systems using this method.

Very often our very expensive air monitoring equipment will have a cross
sensitivity to another chemical, we have found that the gas produced (hydrogen)
from charging a battery will set the CO alarm off. Batteries are one of the
things we look for when investigating a CO alarm in a home in the winter. Of
course we evacuate the residents first.

If the OEM was NiMH then I think you need to stay with that since it is
what the charge circuit is designed for. As for best brand? - I have no
idea. I'd probably settle for Amazon best reviews and lowest price.

My original coal mine CO detector died long ago. I replaced it with a Xintex
marine CO detector. It is now old enough to need replacement or a factory refurb
if they will do it. That will cost either $140 or so for new or $25 for a
refurb. So I was in the hardware store and what do you know – a home CO
detector for $25 brand new and it runs on batteries.
Does anyone have any idea if these are suitable for a boat? I am going to get
something, no way do I want people sleeping below without some kind of alarm.

The R does not have an aft stateroom. Just a big
open bunk to store your sails and the nav
station. I suspect the fuel is under it as it is
a good location. Water is probably under one of
the settees or possibly in the bow under the
forward end of the v berth if Ball thought it
would be better balance to keep it there.

Also, according to sailboatdata, instead of the
75g water and 40G fuel, it carries only 30g of water and 20 of fuel.

Re: Stus-List CO detector choices

2017-11-27 Thread David Castor via CnC-List
UL 2034 is the applicable standard. It covers residential, RV and marine
applications. But it contains specific *additional* requirements for use
on boats. So I'm guessing if it does not state is rated for marine or boat
use, it doesn't meet these supplemental requirements. Not sure what they
are. There used to be a separate UL standard for boat CO detectors, but it
was deleted and those requirements were added to UL 2034 as additional
requirements for marine use.

I bought my CO detector at Costco. As far as I know, CO in the home is no
different than CO in a boat. I believe the detector has to be replaced
every ten years.

Stus-List CO detector choices

2017-11-27 Thread Della Barba, Joe via CnC-List
My original coal mine CO detector died long ago. I replaced it with a Xintex
marine CO detector. It is now old enough to need replacement or a factory
refurb if they will do it. That will cost either $140 or so for new or $25 for
a refurb. So I was in the hardware store and what do you know – a home CO
detector for $25 brand new and it runs on batteries.
Does anyone have any idea if these are suitable for a boat? I am going to get
something, no way do I want people sleeping below without some kind of alarm.

Fuel tank is normally under the aft berth Water tank should be under one
of the settees I'd think. The fuel and water fills in the deck will be
close to the tank locations so should give a clue.

Drawing are here but they don't show tankage locations: https://c-c-37-40.

Re: Stus-List Espar furnace repairs

2017-11-27 Thread Daniel Cormier via CnC-List
It's mounted high on the aft bulkhead just behind the aft cabin… I presume they
put it high like that so the fuel line would be below the tank. With the fuel
pump there's no need to gravity feed. It almost interferes with the rudder
cables and auto pilot so placing the duct lines is tricky.
