Re: Stus-List Split in keel.

Brien,

The keel stub extends roughly 4-6” from the hull down at the aft end. I can’t
tell from the picture if you damage is to the glass or the lead portion of the
keel. Either way, the suggested methods of sealing it with epoxy will work.
Some glass and fairing will make the repair blend into the keel better too. I
have pictures of my 35-3 without the keel attached, if you are interested.

I recently discovered this split in the trailing edge of my keel (photo
provided via google drive link below). It looks as though the split has
exposed the lead of the keel. The rest of the keel looks fine. No evidence of
any water intrusion of any kind in the keel to stub joint. No C&C smile at all.
Has anyone seen anything like this or had to make this repair on their boat.
This is my first season with her and I'd rather not get into a super expensive
keel repair if I don't have to. My thoughts were inject with epoxy, cover with
glass mat, sand, fair, and repaint. Any thoughts or advice would be greatly
appreciated.

Re: Stus-List Solar vent batteries

2017-11-28 Thread Chuck S via CnC-List
Solar Fans are great. Better than opening ports cause the induce air changes
when there is no wind. I installed four in my 36 footer in 2007.

FYI, I recently replaced batteries in my Nicro solar fans and one actually
became quieter. You can't tell it's running. The other, no work at all. Just
sayin. I need to take time to remove the working battery and put it the other
fan to prove the fan may be shot.

I replaced my ICP solar fans that stopped working, That comoany went out of
business. I ordered Marinco Solar Fans and regret it. They are so obnoxiously
tall, they will catch sheets and I have to fabricate new rings of PVC Foamboard
to defend that or convert to Nicro units. I'm still working on options.

I feel really honored to have one of the “R’s”. It’s taken me a year to learn
how to sail it and I am still noticing it but what absolute fun it h as been.

Do you know if there is any similar graphic resource as you found for the 37-40

Found this list of 37/40 boats. Great resource, but I prefer the smaller

FYI, there were only 94 hulls made of the 34/36 model, 9 R's and the rest
cruising plus and XL models with at least three different rig options. There
are many boats ready for sale that aren't listed, boats waiting for a new
owner. The key questions are "Where are you located, where will you sail, how
many people can you get to crew. A 37/40 needs a large crew, while I can

Looked at your photo and it looks like the split is fairing material, not the
real keel. I always follow Dennis' advice, BTW. He's tops. I suggest you
sand/grind fairing down to solid stuff and fill with a waterproof material.

I've also heard of using wire brushes to apply the epoxy to lead. Same
concept as the scotch bite pad.

Re: Stus-List Split in keel.

2017-11-28 Thread Dennis C. via CnC-List
I did some cosmetic repair/fairing on the trailing edge of Touche's keel
years ago. Your situation is similar.

I ground off deteriorated material down to exposed lead then quickly
applied epoxy with a ScotchBrite pad. Why? The lead will oxidize
quickly. Applying the epoxy with a rough pad by rubbing hard will remove
any oxidation while covering the lead with the epoxy to prevent further
oxidation.

Once I had the lead covered, I epoxied some glass to one side of the
trailing edge and let it cure. This formed a backstop for working the
other side. I applied epoxy thickened with colloidal silica to the other
side and faired it with a plastic spreader. Once it all cured, I sanded
and faired with 3M Premium Filler. I used an 18 inch stiff long board
sander to square the trailing edge to 1/4 inch width. Bottom paint
followed.

Not a technically challenging job. Just a bit of planning and patience.

Re: Stus-List Split in keel.

2017-11-28 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
Your plan sounds good to me. You might consider a g-flex type of epoxy.
You could possibly even forgo the fiberglass tape and see how it goes after
a single season. The biggest question in my mind is weather or not water
is entering the boat through the crack.

   - UK/Victory #3 (2009).
   - North Kevlar #4.
   - North Asymetrical Spinnaker (2006).

   - UK/Victory .75 oz. Symetrical (2006).

The 37R being scrapped appears to be "Third Wave".

This link takes you to some photos of her from happier times (and a view of
the winches and some of the other gear she had).

Stus-List Split in keel.

2017-11-28 Thread Brien Sadler via CnC-List
I recently discovered this split in the trailing edge of my keel (photo
provided via google drive link below). It looks as though the split has
exposed the lead of the keel. The rest of the keel looks fine. No evidence
of any water intrusion of any kind in the keel to stub joint. No C&C smile
at all. Has anyone seen anything like this or had to make this repair on
their boat. This is my first season with her and I'd rather not get into a
super expensive keel repair if I don't have to. My thoughts were inject
with epoxy, cover with glass mat, sand, fair, and repaint. Any thoughts or
advice would be greatly appreciated.

I didn't want to tell anyone this but when I was testing out my espar I ran
it without the combustion air line connected on first startup. a nice cloud
of smelly white smoke bellowed out (burning off years of carbon buildup)
which creeped through my aft cabin and set of my CO detector :) I have a
standard household carbon monoxide detector - glad to know it's working!

They're beautiful winches, but out of my price range at the moment.  I was
hoping the salvage sail would be letting some go for cheap.  If not I'm going
to wait until the summer.  Thanks though!

Re: Stus-List Sail drives in general

2017-11-28 Thread Della Barba, Joe via CnC-List
I have had good luck with my PSS shaft seal. I only replaced it because the
shaft was being replaced anyway. That said, I think you can accomplish the same
thing now with Teflon packing in a stuffing box more or less.
Sail drives seem fantastic to USE, I have nothing but good to say about how
they perform. They can potentially be a huge maintenance nightmare when
they go bad though. One trick someone told me about was to fill the cooling
water intake with epoxy and use a normal seacock.

Thanks for all the responses on sail drives. I have many of the same
reservations expressed, but also have the same with the PSS shaft seal not
seeing the value of changing from the traditional packing. That said, if a
potential new to me boat had a PSS shaft seal I would not reject it out of
hand. As with many things, it comes down to knowing the pros and cons of any
“new” technology and applying the appropriate maintenance. It is reassuring to
hear the multiple positive experiences from sail drive owners on the list.

From the very small sample of responding sail drives owners on the list, there
seems to be a very different cost for the seal change between the Yanmars and
the one Volvo, with John shelling out 2 x’s what the Yanmar owners did.
Granted it is more than replacing packing, whether GFO or regular flax. It
does not seem to just be a regional “cost of living” variation as believe Barry
is also on western LIS [Mt. Sinai area] and IIRC Ted is / was further out on
the island, vs. Ron on the Narragansett ?? Though McMichaels does have a
premium price reputation [from what I have heard is one of the better, few
remaining yards in the area] it may be more a Volvo vs Yanmar cost
differential. Some further research is needed.

Thanks,
Brian

I had also had reservations about sail drives when looking for my next boat. I
spoke with a lot of people who actually owned a boat with a sail drive and the
overwhelming majority of owners really liked them. There was nothing said that
would would have prevented me from purchasing a boat with a sail drive. So I
did.

I have owned boats with shafts and sail drives and can tell you from first hand
experience that I prefer a sail drive. Some people worry about the seal at the
hull failing and sinking their boat but if you ever saw that seal, you would
realize it would be very difficult for it to fail. When I purchased my boat I
had the original seal replaced as it was 14 years old but still looked new. I
tried to puncture the old seal with a screwdriver but it was extremely
difficult to do. It was easier to damage the bellows on my previous boat with a
PSS dripless shaft seal. The sail drive seal is protected by the hull and sits
about 8 inches above the bottom of the boat. You would have to do a huge amount
of damage to your hull before the seal would be exposed.

Changing the seal is a DIY project if you are somewhat handy. I will definitely
do it myself next time. My engine had to be slid forward a couple of inches to
remove the sail drive. There was one mechanic doing the work and he had no
problem moving the engine by himself. The sail drive on my boat is 16 years old
and doesn't have any corrosion. Keep it coated with the proper paint and you
won't have issues. Maintenance costs are similar to those of a shaft drive. I
wouldn't hesitate to buy another boat with a sail drive as I don't see any
downside.

We use Altair atmospheric monitors to detect bad air in confined spaces where I
work. The CO sensor is identified as being cross sensitive by the manufacturer
and we've seen this occur during use. In fact we have been able to detect
hydrogen leaks from compressed gas systems using this method.

My original coal mine CO detector died long ago. I replaced it with a Xintex
marine CO detector. It is now old enough to need replacement or a factory
refurb if they will do it. That will cost either $140 or so for new or $25 for
a refurb. So I was in the hardware store and what do you know – a home CO
detector for $25 brand new and it runs on batteries.
Does anyone have any idea if these are suitable for a boat? I am going to get
something, no way do I want people sleeping below without some kind of alarm.

Batteries give off hydrogen. I am not sure why a CO detector would react to H2.
If you have a combo CO/Propane detector, it would likely react to any flammable
gas.
