a 33 and three 26s.Now I think we're down to my 30, a 35-3 and a 26.  There is
a 35-2 and 25 on the hard, but not going in anytime soon.Too bad. There is and
has been a Lancer 30, designed by C&C.  If that counts...RonWild CheriSTL

Stus-List hydraulic backstay

2018-03-21 Thread Dan via CnC-List
Hey everyone,
I noticed that my hydraulic backstay was leaking a little hydraulic fluid
around the piston point - an indication that a seal inside probably needs
replacing... I noticed that over the winter most of the fluid has leaked
out and the backstay will no longer hold pressure. We've had temperatures
as low as -19 deg. Celcius here in Canada, just wondering if this leaking
is normal with a bad seal or is there more at play here with leaving my
hydraulics exposed to the harsh cold environment?

Thanks,

Stus-List Grenadine's Ownership History

2018-03-21 Thread Randy Stafford via CnC-List
In case anyone cares, I’ve managed to piece together my boat’s ownership
history:

1972-1975: Robert Andrews, Traverse City, MI, boat name ?, AO Lake Michigan
1975-1987: Robert Dopke, Traverse City, MI, boat name Premium Due, AO Lake
Michigan
1987-: Jack Knol, Traverse City, MI, boat name Ruby, AO Lake Michigan
-2012: Greg Nachazel, Traverse City, MI, boat name Ruby, AO Lake Michigan
2012-2016: Travis Palmer, Durango, CO, boat name Kona, AO Navajo Reservoir
2016-now: Randy Stafford, Ken Caryl, CO, boat name Grenadine, AO Chatfield
Reservoir

I’ve spoken or corresponded with the three owners before me. Greg Nachazel is
a colorful Traverse City local character who knew quite well all the previous
owners before him, and the history of the boat.

The first owner Robert Andrews was president of Harbor West of Traverse City,
which bought and expanded a marina (home of the Harbor West Yacht Club) on the
west shore of the west arm of Grand Traverse Bay. He reportedly raced my boat
in the Chicago-Mackinac race while he owned it. He had the boat measured for
IOR before it was shipped from C&Cs NOTL yard (the measurement documents came
with the boat). I don’t know whether he is still alive.

Robert Dopke apparently liked to entertain on the boat, and reportedly never
took it out of the marina. He is deceased.

Jack Knol didn’t take the boat out much either, according to Greg Nachazel.
But Jack repainted it red after the original gelcoat faded to pink, he said,
and also recovered all cushions to get rid of cigar smoke smell.

Greg Nachazel said he single-handed the boat a lot, and replaced its prop shaft
and housing, and A4 fuel pump. He said he was knocked down to spreaders in the
water once. Must’ve been a big gust to do that to a 30 MK I.

In summary my boat lived in fresh water in Traverse City, MI for 40 years, was
lightly used by the second, third, and fifth owners, and seems well cared for
by almost all owners. I’m guessing it was Robert Andrews or Robert Dopke who
raised the boom 12” from its as-shipped height (the early hull numbers of 30-1s
had a low boom). Her rarely-used #1 genoa (Hood sails), working jib (Boston
sails), storm jib (Hood), and short staysail (Boston) are probably original
equipment. Over the years seven other sails of various makes were added to her
inventory, and I’m giving her a new main this year.

Cheers,
Randy Stafford

frequently within the past year - but as far as I know I haven’t missed any

To me it’s not that big of a deal to receive replies before receiving the

Stus-List Defender Sale

2018-03-21 Thread Chuck Gilchrest via CnC-List
Come Wind, Rain, and Snow, Defender's annual warehouse sale starts this
afternoon online and will run all weekend at their facility in Waterford,
Ct. I'll be there representing my company Novatec Braids (Novabraid Rope)
from Yarmouth, NS and there will be a myriad of other factory reps on hand
to answer questions and give recommendations on everything from
refrigeration to anchor chain to foul weather gear and more. I was told by
one of the GM's at Defender that in celebration of their 80th year in
business, the normal discount for virtually every item in the store has been
increased from 7-10% in past years up to 20% for the sale. Thursday is
typically mobbed at the warehouse, but I suspect that the weather is going
to keep more than a few folks at home.

Should you be in the area, it is truly worth stopping by if for no other
reason than to peruse the clothing selection. I've bought a brand new Henri
Lloyd Dry Suit (for dinghy racing) there for $150 when the regular retail
was well over $500. Item such a bottom paint, brushes, fenders,
electronics, close outs on radios and speakers, and the largest inflatable
boat assortment in the country very aggressively priced.

Stop by and ask for me in the rope and cut goods area. Would love to talk
C&Cs with anyone interested.. Put the SUV in 4WD and bash through the
drifts to go shopping for the boat!

Cheers,
