Touche' has a day/night solar vent in the head. Parts of the year it is
covered by me storing the dinghy on the foredeck.

I find that the fan powered heaters work well even when the solar fan is idle.
I have two of these:

When I leave the boat I use one year round and add the second one for colder
nights. If you keep the cabin air above the dew temperature, you won't have a
lot of moisture except perhaps on hatch and portlight lenses.

Hi Brian

I replaced my forward hatch with a stainless ManShip
hatch,
I'd done the same on an earlier boat so I knew I'd be happy with it. Also
changed the mid cabin hatch.

My boat came with a mushroom vent in the head, slightly ahead of the overhead
light. I replaced that with a Nico solar vent, and have since replaced the
vent - they seem to have a life of a few years, I can live with that. I
appreciate it exhausting air from the head, helps the air movement greatly. I
did dig out the balsa and re-fill with epoxy - the previous owner just cut the
hole and dropped the vent in.

Pics available on request, what's your email?

Stus-List hatch vents

2018-04-07 Thread Howard and Skippy via CnC-List

to: John Conklin

I also have a 35-3. I put 2 solar powered vents in, one in the head
hatch feeding air in and one in the main salon hatch set to exit air.
The combo works well and the boat is never stuffy after it sits for a
few days. Cut the plexiglass in the hatch to size, caulk and you will be
good to go.

2018-04-07 Thread Eric Frank via CnC-List
On Cat’s Paw, I installed a Nicro solar vent over the head like Jim (as an
exhaust) and then an additional one over the hanging locker on the starboard
side (as intake) using the two raised areas on the deck where dorades are often
installed (none on Cat’s Paw). There was already a Nicro vent in the main hatch
(intake) like the one John wants to install. Also modified the Plexiglass
companion way “door” with a metal vent as an additional exhaust, which was
important to keep good airflow through the cabin. This has really helped with
mold during the winter and keeping the air fresh in the cabin during the
summer. Although rain-proof (sloping horizontal metal pieces), it is certainly
not waterproof, so in heavy weather I take the sliding “door” out and replace
it with the 4 teak boards that came with the boat.

Brian,

My boat came with a vent in the forward hatch. I removed it, as it was a
source of water in the v berth area. I have since replaced the lens. The
filler plug for the vent blocked some of the light (but was at least
watertight).

I have a Nicro solar vent in the hatch over the main saloon. Works great. The
plastic shop cut the hole when I replaced that lens too. I don't have any
ventilation in the head, but I do have a bungee cord to keep the head door open
during the off season. It helps.

I can't speak too much to the vent question but hatches I have some experience
with.
I looked into all this.  I ended up going with all new hatches.  6 in all.
Select plastics are expensive.  Its pretty much the same cost as a new hatch.
The savings they claim is in the labor to install a new hatch rather than just
take the lid off and put it back on.
Glazer glass in New bedford Massachusetts is far more reasonable in price.
I went new because all the plastic hardware was uv damaged and brittle.  There
are some how to videos out there on how to do the lens yourself.
If you have the old lewmar ocean hatches let me know the size.  I may have one
of the same size.  You could keep a hatch in place and replace the lens in the
spare to allow a clean swap out.  It also allows plenty of time to do it right
without worry of a big opening in the deck for any length of time.  Or we could
get the spare to glazer glass, have them do the lens and then do a clean swap.
I have no affiliation with either of these glass companies other than having
spoke to them on the phone.
Danny
