I can't speak to Adam's refit, but she sank at the dock at my home club
(Bedford Basin Yacht Club), she was on the end of the marina in a big storm, a
wave hit just wrong, mid finger cleat put a hole in the side.

We now have mandatory marina evacuation when the wind is > 40 knots, which
people take seriously for some reason!

Stus-List Stainless, chrome and metal

2018-10-03 Thread Dennis C. via CnC-List
Spent a couple hours polishing the stainless and chrome pieces on Touche'.
Just some observations.

The added on pedestal guard and stainless wheel had moderate stains.
Mostly easily removed. The bimini bows had moderate stains. Fairly easily
removed. Manufacturer of these parts is unknown.

The stern pulpit (pushpit) and bow pulpit had virtually no stains. C&C
used some really good quality stainless tubing! The bow chainplate - zero
stains.

Point is that some stainless and chrome parts showed stains while others
did not. Not surprising, I've seen it before. Been around boats a long
time.

Just makes me appreciate a builder or parts supplier that uses good quality
materials rather than schlock, garbage, crap. Looking at many of the other
pieces on the boat by good suppliers, Harken, Shaefer, Garhauer, Barient,
etc. showed little to no stains or blemishes.

Sometimes I just want to scream when I see or am asked about using cheap,
inferior products on a boat. Glad C&C used quality materials.

Buddy of mine is refurbing a Hans Christian. In spite of the Scandinavian
sounding name, it's a Taiwanese made boat. The stainless is not the best.
My buddy is meticulously replacing all the critical stainless parts. He's
using Garhauer and a local guy to fab up replacement parts.

Just my opinion, but consider about quality every time you think about
putting a critical part on your boat. Cheap can sometimes be really
expensive.

Dave.
I love your question and look forward to responses. We, on our 33-1 are looking
at the same issue. In our case we have had no real holding tank (a 6 gallon job
which was never used) but have used an electro-scan Type 1 Marine Sanitation
Device. As Puget Sound in now a no discharge zone we need to choose our next
system. The composting head sounds like an interesting option but I too would
like to here what others have experienced. They are not cheap but neither is a
custom made holding tank. I’ve looked at the many prefabricated tanks and have
not found one which would fit our situation.

The install is pretty straightforward.  First off the biggest advantage to
this system is that it uses some type of capacitance to detect level.
Similar to the way our smartphones detect touch.  The sensors are
completely external to the tank and simply adhere to the outside.  This
means NO LEAKS.  They are comprised of 2 aluminum tape (metal duct tape)
strips installed in parallel on any side besides the top or bottom.  They
run from the top of the tank to the bottom in a vertical fashion.  As the
level in the tank rises the liquid capacitively couples more signal between
the two vertical strips.  This is processed into an output number and then
the user calibrates the specific number to a percentage of level during
installation/setup.  You choose different calibration intervals for ease
and accuracy.  Either a 2 point (full/empty), 5 point (25% increments), or
11 point (10% increments).  An 11 point calibration provides the best
accuracy for odd shaped tanks with sloping or curved sides.

Besides adhering aluminum tape to the side of the tank, a sensor unit with
2 pads gets adhered to the tank.  One pad to each tape strip.  The sensor
is a 4 wire device which has a short pig tail.  A user supplied cable needs
to be routed and connected between the head unit and the sensor.  A
template is provided for cutting the appropriate hole to mount the head
unit.  Then a 12v supply is required.  Then calibrate by filling the tank
to known volumes.  Overall pretty simple.

The aluminum tape strips won't work on metal tanks so the company provides
dip tube style sensors which can be installed instead.  The 37+ has a metal
fuel tank and a metal water tank in the v-birth.

The company also has an option for propane tanks (or any other tank) which
are already equipped with a 0 to 300 ohm output.  Just wire it up and
calibrate.  The head unit can accommodate 8 tanks. Fuel, water, sewage,
propane, etc.

.  Our main sail trimmer was Rob Ball.  We bought our first C&C in 2001, Half
Magic, a ?74 25 Mk 1 as the 3rd owner.  It served our family for 14 years,
mostly day sailing and cruising with a race here and there until our two
children with the occasional friend and a large yellow lab made for rather
crowded accommodations for weekend cruising.  We bought our new Half Magic, an
?83 Landfall 35 in Jan 2016 and again I?m the 3rd owner.  After Zoomer sold, I
rejoined Rob for racing as crew on his Etchells and we worked together at Edson
for quite a few years.  At no time did I consider replacing the 25 with
anything other than another C&C.  Maybe it?s the lines of the boat, maybe the
build quality, or perhaps Rob?s influence as a friend and sailing buddy or a
combination of all of the above.

Just an FYI, after acquiring his 34, Rob?s Etchells is now on the market and is
a spectacularly great deal given the time, money,  and effort he?s put into the
boat.. Someone on the list should snap it up!

Anyone going to Annapolis for the Boat Show this week?  I?ll be down there
walking the show on Thursday and Friday, supporting a few of my Novabraid
dealers.  Hit me up off list if anyone wants to catch up and talk boats.

Cheers,

This is the end of our 3rd season with Destrier, our 73 C&C30 mk1. I bought it
from the second owner who had it for over 30 years. He was a high school
teacher who used it to introduce sailing to his students. The original owner
bought it to race and had it fitted out for sailing as they did it then I
describe it as "original unrestored" condition including the original Atomic 4
which needed some rebuilding but now runs great . We sail out of the Bronx, in
fact, just across "the creek" from Edd Shillay's Enterprise. The highlight has
been our adventure in attending the Northeast Rendevous this year. This winter
I'll take care of a couple of soft spots in the deck. I absolutely love it and
this "support group" shows me I'm not alone in my passion.

I would be very interested in hearing how you installed this, including access
to the tank sides to mount the sensors.

All the best,

wondering if anyone has replaced tank level senders/sensors or reactivated them

All input, suggestions, would be much appreciated, thank you so much.

Adam,  that sounds like quite an undertaking; what did you have to do to get
her up and what was her condition once you had her on the ground? Also, why did
she sink in the first place? Thanks
