Stus-List Driveshaft Castel Nut Thread size

2019-07-02 Thread Francois Rivard via CnC-List
Good afternoon all.

I need some help figuring out on the thread castle nut used to hold the
prop on my 34+ . It's a 1 1/8 stainless steel shaft with a tapered end. I
know the thread is not 3/4 - 10 because I bought replacement castle nut
with that thread and they did not work, it looked small .

Long story short I sent my Martec folding prop for a rebuild while I was
in the yard and the post office lost it. I was able to get back in the
water using my old fixed 3 blader and now I'm looking to replace the prop
with a new Flex - O - Fold.

I have all the other specs I need but I don't know the thread on the castle
nut. I did not see any marking on the old one nor do I see any info in the
specs listed in the owner's manual.

Again, it's not 3/4 - 10, it might be a metric size?

Thanks in advance for your help

Sorry for the delay,

The compass has been installed for awhile, It did show on the Zeus3, and I did
the turns. It was reporting within a couple degrees of my actual heading. So,
that seems like it is behaving. There is one data wire around it, I doubt if
there is anything in that wire that would be affecting it. And like I said, it
is giving an appropriate reading . . .

Is this a new occurrence? Did you check the area around the fluxgate for metal
and wires?

I take it the fluxgate has been installed a while? If it was a new install I'd
say check the orientation of the fluxgate. Do you have a control instrument
where you can adjust the compass, i'e. add/subtract 135?

Interesting issue.

Hello Josh,

Yes, I believe it is an AP20,

I would love to get that manual, but the link is dead, Jim.

I think it is giving me a correct reading, I think it is something in the Zeus

.

Bill,

I have the same compass. Here is a link to the manual.

http://www.echomastermarine.co.uk/assets/manuals/Simrad/Autopilot/Compass/RFC35R%20Instruction%20Manual.pdf

Do you have a simrad/robnet auto pilot? AP 20, 21, 22, 35?

Is your RFC35R setup for NMEA 0183?

I have an AP 22 and J300X autopilot. To calibrate I have to navigate to the
calibration menu and over the course of ~2 minutes perform a complete and even
circle. When it is done calibrating it will go to the next menu where I can
confirm calibration and adjust the offset. During this time I drive dead on
each of the cardinal directions - 90, 180, 270, 360 as indicated by the GPS.
If I find that there is a consistent deviation from between the GPS direction
and the RFC35R direction then I can enter an offset number. I believe that
this offset is generally intended to correct for minor errors resulting from
unsquare mounting and the interference of objects on board. I would look to
see how the RFC35R is mounted. There is a Forward orientation. Then I would
drive in each of the cardinal directions and see if you can determine a
consistent deviation. Next see if you can program that value into the
chartplotter as part of the calibration

If none of those things work then try rotating the orientation of the unit to
see if that has any effect.

Let us know what you find.

But the little boat symbol is rotated 135 degrees clockwise, and my wind is off

2019-07-02 Thread Bill Coleman via CnC-List
I don’t think it is a good idea to just fill with epoxy, there is not much to
keep that from cracking again with all the vibration there.

I would say feather it well, and use either fiberglass, or a Kevlar/Carbon
blend to repair the crack, (with West System) to give it some strength.

Thanks Dennis,

Love your comments. The yards around Annapolis are crazy.

The boat is hauled now and the shaft is out so I want to make the repair
myself. I have the tools for grinding and West System epoxy and 404 and
waterproof fairing epoxy. I haven't seen the crack, so I can only imagine.

I think I would find the crack, grind it to expose good fiberglass, and fill
with Thixo FLex Epoxy. Inside the tube, I would insert a roll of Mylar to
create a smooth finish. Inside the boat, I would add 1708 to the shaft log
where ever I can to beef it up and strengthen it and fair with Total Fair
waterproof epoxy compound.

Am I on the right track?

split. Once the shaft was removed, the hose was found to be OK but the
fiberglass tube, the shaft log, has a crack. (I have not seen it)

The boatyard estimated $10K to replace the fiberglass tube which is more than
the boat is worth, and it's a really nice boat and she wants to sail it, not

I have some ideas about fixing the problem but thought I'd ask the consortium

way to test the repair for leakage before launching.
