2019-11-07 Thread CHARLES SCHEAFFER via CnC-List
Hi Ken,
Beautiful job on your webpage for the 37/40.

Funny, I was looking over the construction drawing you sent me only yesterday.

I did buy everything available for the 34/36 from Kingston Museum when they
first got the drawings. It included seven files; a large sailplan, keel and
rudder foils for the deep keel (but not the wing). No construction drawing, no
lines drawing or sections. I did buy the builders file from Southshore but do
not remember layup schedules or build info there either. It has parts lists
and inspections and letters between the buyer and CI have a very
detailed set of drawings for my three spreader rig I got from Offshore Spars
and Edson provided me drawings for the steering assembly.

My boat is hull number two of the series and I feel it was rushed out the door
to make Block Island Race Week to get the new design onto the race course and
drum up sales. Their strategy worked as 67 of the 94 hulls were built in 1990
and 1991.

I'll call the museum tomorrow and see if any new 34/36 drawings have turned up
since my last contact.

Re: Stus-List C 34+ DK & C 35/36 XL

2019-11-07 Thread Glen Dickson via CnC-List
I own a 34+ (although won't be applying for a PHRF cert until this coming
season), however, I have access to the PHRF-LO handicappers worksheet.
Lake Ontario only lists 3 versions of the 34+:
C 34/36+ DK (XL)
C 34/36+ WK
C 34/36R

That would imply the DK was only available on the XL, however, the brochure
clearly shows the 7'3" fin was available on both the + and the XL versions.
I suspect you'd have to look at the mast, as + is twin spreader, XL is triple
if I recall. I don't think the double was available on an XL and vice versa.

For comparison, PHRF-LO shows (all else being spec), the 34/36+ DK(XL to have
an FS rating of 90, NFS of 111 with feathering/folding prop, and the 34/36+ WK
to be 102/123

Re: Stus-List C 34+ DK & C 35/36 XL

2019-11-07 Thread Glen Dickson via CnC-List
I have a 1990 34+, but have never seen the stepped transom.

Glen D.

The difference between + and XL versions was in the optional (read more
expensive) hull layup on the XL (which was the same layup used on the R), which
used a bit more Kevlar Hybrid Fabric and used Aircraft Grade Pre-Impregnated
Balsa Core in place of Marine Grade Balsa core, so was lighter and perhaps a
bit stronger. It was just another option on the order sheet.

Most XLs were also ordered with the taller tapered mast with three spreaders so
that is the usual way to tell them apart. The order sheet gives the details if
you have a copy of the original. Look for the 'R' Racing layup option to see
if it is ticked off. If you are lucky enough to have the Build File all the
details are in there.

In one C brochure for the 36 Series from 1994/1995 they say the XL mean
'eXtra Light'. The 36 Series is what they called the 34/36 in marketing
materials after C's restructuring in 1993. The Brochure page is here:
http://www.cncphotoalbum.com/brochures/36foot/36xlb1pg02.htm

Skip to the last page of the Brochure to compare the Standard Equipment lists
for the different versions.

Re: Stus-List C 34+ DK & C 35/36 XL

2019-11-07 Thread Ken Heaton via CnC-List
The difference between + and XL versions was in the optional (read more
expensive) hull layup on the XL (which was the same layup used on the R),
which used a bit more Kevlar Hybrid Fabric and used Aircraft Grade
Pre-Impregnated Balsa Core in place of Marine Grade Balsa core, so was
lighter and perhaps a bit stronger. It was just another option on the
order sheet.

Most XLs were also ordered with the taller tapered mast with three
spreaders so that is the usual way to tell them apart. The order sheet
gives the details if you have a copy of the original. Look for the 'R'
Racing layup option to see if it is ticked off. If you are lucky enough to
have the Build File all the details are in there.

Skip to the last page of the Brochure to compare the Standard Equipment
lists for the different versions.

2019-11-07 Thread CHARLES SCHEAFFER via CnC-List
I've done some research on this and found the 34/36 could be ordered with any
combination. Some plus models were ordered with short rigs and some with two
spreader rigs and some with three spreader rigs. There were several keels
offered, 7' 4", 5' 3" wing, and later a centerboard version. In '96, Mars
Metals cast a 6' 3" keel for the boat. Last I heard Mars lost the molds for
the wing keel but still have the molds for the 6' 3" and 7' 4" models. The
difference between Plus and XL remains a mystery to me as I've seen several
versions of each.

As far as I know a 34/36 XL will have triple spreaders and running back and
check stays. The 34+ will have double spreaders and no running backs or
check stays.

Thanks again for the comments.

I've got an order of Captain Tolley's Creeping Crack Cure on the way and
will use that as I tighten the bolts as most have suggested.

Looking forward to finishing these projects and begin sailing again --
might even try to make the Fla Randevu if it works out.
