Re: Stus-List Seized SS Screw

2020-07-02 Thread Dave Godwin via CnC-List
Rob,

Be careful about pulling the stanchions out of the aluminum bases. Hopefully
yours will slip right out.

ALL of my S.S. stanchions were fundamentally welded to the cast aluminum bases.
I spent may hours/days soaking in solvents and heating. Wash, rinse, repeat.
Did not loosen them one bit. A buddy with an acetylene torch took a crack at
with the higher heat.

After applying the heat, he started banging on the aluminum base to free it.
Which is exactly what happened when the base disintegrated. That proved to be a
costly lesson…

Well there ya’go!

A fellow here at our club had a Nelson/Marek 50’ racer whose time had come and
gone, and after years of trying to sell it and paying ever increasing storage
fees did just that!

On a calm day, he took it down to Buffalo to a Broker, and somehow ended up in
Canadian waters, co-incidentally in the deepest part of the lake.
Unfortunately, a terrible fire erupted in the engine room and burned the boat
to the waterline! As luck would have it, he fortunately he happened to be
towing a RIB, so he was able to save himself.

As time goes on there will likely be a sad parade of boats to the breaker’s
yard that would have been repaired in past years. Only so many people want to
spend $30,000 to create a boat worth $12,000 on a good day.
I actually think about this, if I ever sold my boat I am not sure I could stand
watching her sit someplace and decay. Almost rather give her a Viking funeral

osprey nest on deck and wasps living in the cabin sitting an inch lower every

This may be helpful, it shows how the strut is bedded right into the hull.
It took several hours to carefully chip away all the fairing bog. Once it

Well, here's a situation where I should have asked the question first.

Took the fiddle castings, shown in a picture, to a local powder coating

were melted in the process. The shop offers to replace or credit for

damage.

Do we have a source of fiddle castings?

The unfortunate reality is that boats are expensive to maintain. Allow the
maintenance and repairs to stack up and pretty soon those expenses exceed
the book value of the boat. FWIW, there is a neglected Tartan 3700 from
1974 in Solomons which is currently free to a good home. I'm confident
that it will soon be part of the "parade". If anyone is interested or
knows someone interested let me know and I will forward the details.

Stus-List Seized SS Screw

2020-07-02 Thread Robert Abbott via CnC-List

A fellow sailor, who is also a machinist, lent me his Snap On Impact
Driver...it got the seized SS screw out.  In order to remove the
stanchion from the base, I will have to remove the stanchion base from
the deck and he will take it to his shop (basement in this case) to
separate them and straighten the stanchion.

Make sure to seal the threads FULLY with loctite or antiseize (choose your
antiseize wisely here..) when reassembling.

Also be sure the new screws are 316ss, lots of poor quality 'stainless'
hardware out there. Go to your local ace hardware or similar, 18-8 is not
suitable in a marine environment IMO.

I often find that many applications of penetrating oil may be necessary
where corrosion has inhabited threaded products. I try to use a hook/pick
to remove any visible corrosion to help penetration of oil.

Heat is often an option for me. I have a battery powered heat gun that has
a 'concentrator' tip- the flip side of this is using compressed air in a
can- super cold on the bolt to shrink it a bit. Remember that heat
"expanding" makes everything tighter (but might break bonds of corrosion),
you need the male component to be smaller.

We local ad for a C & C 30 being given away to a deserving recipient. Ended up
in a good home. If I did not have kids…that’s what I would do

Almost rather give her a Viking funeral
than become one of “those boats” anchored in Derelict Cove with 100 pounds of
osprey nest on deck and wasps living in the cabin sitting an inch lower every
time you go by.
