Stus-List Re: Racing rules- finishing

2020-09-22 Thread ALAN BERGEN
Look at the definition of racing. After you finish, you have to clear the
finish line and marks. If you touch the pin end after you finish, you must
take a one turn penalty, and that time is added to your finishing time.

Stus-List Re: Racing rules- finishing

2020-09-22 Thread Jeff Nelson
Hmmm... using the rules that expire this year.  I note next years rule
book would fix this issue and I think

further support my interpretation.

My interpretation would be that there was a violation of rule 31 after
finishing.
Therefore you would not have finished and would need to sail back to the
course side of the finish,
take your penalty and then re-finish without hitting the finish mark.
Interesting the definition of
finish does not include rule 31 violations even though it is explicitly
mentioned in rule 31.

31 TOUCHING A MARK
While racing, a boat shall not touch a starting mark before starting, a
mark that begins, bounds or ends the leg of the course on which she
is sailing, o*r a finishing mark after finishin**g*.

Not sure why you would ever hit a mark when finishing...as soon as you
hear the finish signal,
a number of options are present, including starting your engine or other
propulsion to keep clear of the marks

and to clear the line.

Finish A boat finishes when any part of her hull, or crew or equipment in
normal position, crosses the finishing line from the course side.
However, she

has not finished if after crossing the finishing line she
(a) takes a penalty under rule 44.2,
(b) corrects an error under rule 28.2 made at the line, or
(c) continues to sail the course.

*28.1* A boat shall start, sail the course described in the sailing
instructions

and finish. While doing so, she may leave on either side a mark that
does not begin, bound or end the leg she is sailing.*After finishing**
**she need not cross the finishing line completely.*

David,

There’s a penalty. Even though the boat has finished, she is still racing. See
the rules.

All the best,

Edd
