I think I would try and get the engine running. You've got the left water
lift or muffler or whatever, and you want to blow it through there, and not
have water sitting in there. You're going to have to get it running sooner
or later anyways.

Old shade tree mechanic trick. Marvel Mystery Oil is great stuff.
However, when I did it I used automatic transmission fluid. The AT4 I was
resuscitating hadn't been run in over 10 years. Brought it back to life.

I also did it late one Sunday evening after all my dock neighbors had
left. I WILL make a cloud. :)

The fuel could well be it if it's getting old. Open the fuel cap and give
it sniff and see if it smells foul.

Next things I would do:
1. Pull the spark plugs out and give them a look - see if one looks
different than the others (best to do right after having the issue... you
might find one is wet and hence not firing)
2. Pop the distrubutor cap off and give the points a look - if noting looks
obviously bad, give'm a little scuff with some fine sandpaper to clean them
up a bit.

Might if the tank is getting low it might be worth trying to burn up the
remaining fuel and try with fresh fuel and filter.

Sounds like a sticking valve. Very common with an A4 and very easy to fix.
With the engine running at moderate rpms, pour a little Marvel Mystery Oil
into the carb air intake. Do this a couple of times and marvel at the smoke
cloud! This will usually free up a stuck valve and return the engine to
