Re: Stus-List Plastic-Wrapped Spars in Sunlight

2016-11-16 Thread Jeff Allston via CnC-List
I few years ago I was getting my C 32 ready for shipping so I wrapped the
mast in several layers of thin film plastic to keep all the running rigging
from flopping around. There was a 10 week delay in shipping so the mast sat in
direct sunlight and +25c for a while. When I removed the plastic, quite a bit
of it was fused to the mast which required a lot of scraping to remove.

Listers-

My C 30 Owner's Manual says "DO NOT expose a spar wrapped in plastic to
direct sunlight." Does anyone know the rationale for this precaution? Was the
worry that a brand-new spar for a brand-new C boat might be wrapped in thin
plastic film that would melt in direct sunlight or something?

Of course, the reason I'm asking is because my rig is down for winter, and
laying along my trailer side rail, and I've wrapped the lower mast section
containing the coiled halyards, lower sheaves, cleats, etc. in thick plastic.
Most of the mast will be shaded all winter but I'm not sure about that section.

Thanks,
Randy

Anyone know off-hand the circumference of a C 32 mast?That SSI Custom
Plastics place has them right on the site but I'm not sure what size I need and
the boat is two hours away. It's going to rain all weekend and be crappy out so
it's unlikely I'll be making the trip for summarizing.

Josh,
That's one of their models. Mine is the furnace only, no stove/oven.

Jeff,
Is Wallas the diesel stove/oven that starts a blower when you close the lid?
Cool idea for getting propane off the boat.

This model heater has two hot air ducts and two cold air returns. One cold air

have one outlet vent there. I ran the other duct under the stove, behind the
water tank, through the hanging locker and, finally, out the bottom of the

It works great. I went with Wallas because the national distributor is in town

Hi All,
I'm starting to look at the Espar and Webasto units. Is anyone running one on a
32? There's a good price jump from the Espar D2 to the D4. The literature
indicates the D2 is good to 26 feet of boat, so it sounds like I need the D4 :(
My use is Georgian Bay, just want to extend the season, not living aboard in
the winter. The boat is two hours away so there will be "maintenance" trips in
the spring and fall which means sleeping aboard, it can get quite cold up
there.
I have to keep the temps warm for the boat parrot who'll be living aboard with
us while we cruise. We're planning three weeks in August this year so it
shouldn't be too much of an issue but it gets cold up there at night, even in
August. I imagine a D2 would be fine for cold summer nights but I have ideas
about maybe cruising the North Channel when the fall colours are out. I don't
want to limit myself. At the same time, I don't want to spend money that could
go elsewhere.
The Newport Dickinson Diesel bulkhead heaters are pretty but I hear they don't
make quite enough heat. I'm leaning this way for the cost, but don't want to be
disappointed. Everyone says the Espar and Webastos are best.
I'de be doing the installation myself in any case so am eager to hear from
others who have gone through it.
Thanks,
SteveSuhana, C 32Toronto

The cabin is slightly darker, but it's not really a problem. There isn't a lot
of wood in there to start with. I applied 6 coats of varnish which makes these

JeffI have seen some examples of that procedure, but the pictures were small
and it was hard to get a good feel for the look.I have been toying with that
idea, only one step better (it was my back up). Just a short distance from here
there is a lumber mill that deals in teak. They sell the Teak and holly panels
for the floor, teak boards and teak plywood. I was thinking of getting some ΒΌ
teak plywood to make new panel. Your happy with it. Does it make the cabin
feel darker?Larry ___

On my 32, I stripped the material from the four removable panels and applied
teak veneer. It made a huge improvement in the interior looks.

Hello: I have a 1986 MKIII 38-ft. One of the removable panels over the galley
(four or five screws) material needs replacing. I have pulled the panel and
removed the material. It cannot be save, it was ruined by the previous owner
trying to glue the edges back up as a quick fix. All the others in the cabin
are in great shape. Does anyone know where I can find a match. It is cream to
beige in color, as I am certain all of them are. I was told it was a vinyl wall
covering by a boat upholstering shop. I live on an island in Washington state.
I can take a ferry or bridge to the main land, but it is normally an 3.5 round
trip just over and back, without leaving the ferry dock area. So I do most
things via the internet. Thanks for any help you may have.
