Re: Stus-List Otter Problem

2014-01-26 Thread Tom B
Thanks for all of the ideas...

We hosed off the crap, deck brushed the dock and spread a box of moth flakes
around. If that doesn't work I'll try some camphor oil next. The deck is
not too close or low and she's all battened down. So, we're not too concerned
about otter boarding. We'll have to keeps an eye on things and see how it
goes. Fortunately the dock is a 5 minute walk so we get to the boat often...

Stus-List Otter Problem

2014-01-25 Thread Tom B
Yesterday we relocated Alera to our a Yacht Club's brand new docks. We have
been on the wait list there for years and this is closer and cheaper. We were
assigned a slip on the inside of the hammerhead at the end of the dock. When
we tied up I noticed a large amount of poop on the dock. It looked bigger that
any raccoon poop, like we had at our prior dock.

As I was walking up I saw an otter on the dock. Apparently it is very bold and
seemed to be nearly domesticated by the way some of the guys were shooing it
away with little effect.

My research revealed that otters develop habitual latrine areas and will go
back to the same spot, out of the water where they live, to crap. Apparently,
our finger pier is that spot.

Any suggestions or crappy remarks are appreciated!

Stus-List Adjustable genoa car

2014-01-21 Thread Tom B
Adjustable cars seem like a great deal. Some installs show a bungie attached
to the aft shackle on the car to pull it aft and counteract the sheet pull.
Does this result in losing the use of some of the aft track section?

Subject: Stus-List Hand rails for C&C33

Hi folks:

Our original teak handrails on deck are in need of attention. ?They are
leaking, but also need to be refinished and I'd prefer to not have to sand and
apply 5-6 coats of Cetol.

Has anyone tried the 'Plasteak' had rails on deck? ?If so, are you happy with
the results or do they look cheap, and obviously plastic? ?Leaking problems??

I have heard mixed reports of replacing handrails with stainless steel,
although I like the zero maintenance factor.

Stus-List Rigging and listing

2014-01-19 Thread Tom B
As part if my spring prep I want to check my base point on my mast tuning.
Alera does not have adjustable back stays but does have a baby stay for some
tuning. But my question goes to the basic initial setting.

What is the appropriate top mast position? I under stand the idea of using the
weighted halyard to set it but Alera, like many boats has a stud list at rest.
I'm not too sure how to account for this when tuning the rigging.

Stus-List Wheel wraps

2013-11-27 Thread Tom B
I did Alera's last winter with the Boatleather kit w pad. I used my bike stand
and a car wheel lock I had laying rand to make a stand. That helped a. Lot. I
also used the project as an excuse to get a decent pair of sailing gloves at
the boat show in Seattle. Gloves are a must if you want tight knots and don't
want to shred your hands.

It was pretty easy. The video helped, though doing it left handed made the
video a little more difficult t follow. The only real tricky parts were
rounding the wheel spokes and the finishing knot.

I've crossed the Georgia Strait a number of times in other people's boats
and am just about to do it in my 24 for the first time, solo. Silva Bay to
False Creek. Have got Keats/Gibsons, Snug Cove, Fisherman's as alternatives
if necessary, although these are mostly off track, any other ideas? I've
been told False Creek can have 5 to 6 knot currents making docking tricky,
does one need to aim for slack?

With short boat length will need to wait for calmer seas.

Any thoughts for a smaller boat?

Stus-List Genoa Sheets

2013-07-22 Thread Tom B
Thanks Bill...I checked today and Alera is carrying 3/4" sheets. They do work
in the Barient 32's but not very good. I am wondering if anyone has had luck
with 9/16th's or if I should just go with 5/8.".

Stus-List Genoa Sheets

2013-07-22 Thread Tom B
Our genoa sheets are left over from the PO. I'm not sure of the size, but they
are bigger than 1/2, super fat and great on the hands. But they do not run
through the blocks well and act like they are caught just from their weight and
softness.

I have Barient 32s. I am all for comfortable sheets, but really want ones
that also work.

Any recommendations?

I have been holding off because it is impossible for me to be objective about

Stus-List non-skid paint

2013-05-31 Thread Tom B
We used Kiwigrip on our old 35 MK1 and it was great. Just a light sanding. We
took a plug from some repair I had done to the local paint store to get a
perfect match. Get their applicator roller, it's well worth it. Clean, light
sanding and masking took more time than the application. We saw her last
weekend when we were in Olympia and the deck still looks new 2 years later.

Here's what it looked like.

My guess ( just because noone mentioned it yet) would be a clogged heat
exchanger. It was a problem for me on my 35 MK 1, but that was an A4. Not too
sure it would apply to your diesel.

Stus-List Boat buying tips

2013-02-27 Thread Tom B
I second pretty much everything said so far. A contract subject to survey,
engine inspection, rigging inspection and sea trial can save you from a bad
boat. It will cost more, but still be way better than a bad buy! And no matter
how much you really "want" the boat you are looking at, don't hesitate to walk.

I have had varied results with surveyors. Between Jubillee (our 35 MK 1), the
37+ I passed on after it failed a sea trial, and Alera, the quality of the
surveys vary a great deal. The ability to do the full moisture analysis is
especially important, as stated already. The best survey I got was on Jubilee
and the surveyor actually specialized in commercial fishing vessels. His did
not have much sailboat savvy, but he was thorough and provided a punch list of
everything that needed to be done including photos, which was a huge help for
us as rookies.

And no matter how good the surveyor is, and how little you think you know,
follow them through the process and do your own back up. Ask questions and
press them throughout the process. Everyone has an off day.

The toughest thing you will have to deal with the possibility of no sea trial.
It saved my ass on one possible purchase when we were looking for our 37+.
Than, we bought Alera without one. She was on the hard at Niagara on the Lake
in November. iBut she only had 480 hrs on the engine and had obviously been
babied. Also, my brother was familiar with her and her PO. Gert Teil's survey
was not very detailed at all, but since both he and several others involved in
the sale were C&C factory veterans, I still had a high comfort level. If
things had been different, it might have been prudent to pay the cost related
to taking her out. But my gut told me she was our boat!

Finally, don't let the broker push you or rush you...not in this market. I
have had brokers push back on a request for anything more than a few weeks to
get everything done. But you should ask for as much time as you need with a
pad because shit happens.

One last thing...listen to your heart...if she's your boat, she'll speak to you.

Stus-List Cheap fixer upper vs used well kept used boat

2013-01-20 Thread Tom B
We have gone both ways. I think there is a great deal to be said for getting I
A. Fixer upper for. Your first boat, if the price is right. Our 35MK 1 Jubilee
was in neglected shape though the hull, sails and rigging were solid, she was
filthy. We picked her up at a Boy Scout auction for $9k. At the price, we had
a ways to go until we got totally upside down. But by the time we sold her
last year for 2k5 we had accomplished that goal!

The process of turning the boat around and learning the numerous tasks and
systems was invaluable and made us much better boaters and sailors.

Alera was the most well kept 37+ I could find anywhere in NorthAmerica. She had
a mere 480 hours on the engine and some pretty sweet upgrades as well. Like in
boom furling, that I love but probably would never have considered installing
myself. However, between the transport from NOL to Seattle, refinishing the
bottom for saltwater, installing a windlass and appropriate anchor and a new
dodger, we were completely upside down long before she ever hit the water!

The experience with Jubilee was invaluable in talking on all of the new and
strange systems on the new boat.

Stus-List Sole (wo)man

2013-01-04 Thread Tom B
My first mate, Lynn, has always handled our bright work. She wants to refinish
a portion of the Teak/Holly sole on Alera. Apparently the prior owner had all
of the removable panels refinished, but not he section at the bottom of the
steps since they don't come out.

As we understand it, the sole is a veneer and she is concerned about damaging
it in the sanding process. Also, she is thinking about using a min wax floor
finish.

A little advice here on techniques and products would be appreciated.

Thx and Happy New Year everyone!

Stus-List Deck fill cap replacement 1990 37+

2012-10-27 Thread Tom B
Last summer we lost overboard one of the water tank filler caps. It is
aluminum with an eight pointed star for upending with a winch handle. We are
using a newer plug as a temporary fix, but all the newer filler tubes use and
internal ring washer. These older ones use a ring washer partially embedded
into the deck receptacle piece that the cap then screws down against.

Anyone know where I can get a replacement?

Stus-List Best price on a 1989 CNC 37+

2012-10-07 Thread Tom B
Based on putting a well worn 89 under contract (that failed the sea trial) and
then purchasing the pristine Alera I think that the boat you are describing
should be priced out at around 80-82k. But I'm no broker.

The things that would cause me a great dal of concern is that any intrusion
into the hull or decks is, as I understand it, are located by moisture tests.
And with the boat sitting on the hard that long it's seems to me that it may
well have dissipated.

Rigging and full mechanical inspections are essential, in addition to the
survey. And there are surveys and then there are surveys! The one I had done
on our old 35 MK 1 was totally comprehensive with tons of pictures and a
description of everything on the vessel not 100%.

The one for Alera was a summary and superficial. But I had a high comfort
level in the boar and the surgery was done by Gert Teil, I figure it was ok.

Still, no sea trial seems like a huge chance. But getting a 37+ is sure worth
the effort, expense and risk.

Good luck and feel free to give me a call if you was to talk...206-463-9200

Stus-List Tacktick instruments

2012-10-02 Thread Tom B
I installed the entry level package on my 35 Mk1, Jubilee, last year and used
them one season before moving up to Alera. They were easy to nest all and set
up and worked fine. As a geek, I found the potential for expansion with the
wireless model I strong inducement. That and not having to pull the mast to
install them.

Mounted them all on a 1/4" piece of teak that I used to cover to old ones.

Stus-List Mystery solved

2012-07-29 Thread Tom B
Thanks for all the help gang. Dunce hat for me...

We recently replaced the shower head with one with a water saving on off
function. But it does make the hose leak a bit. When I finished my shower I
neglected to turn off the water and the hose leak into the bilge was causing
the cycling.

That said, I'd rather feel dumb than have another issue with this water system.
