Under the design waterline ,although one could make a strong argument that in
this case that situation was self correcting.

Re: Stus-List Ever Have a Battery-Selector Switch Go Bad?

2014-08-22 Thread kirk sneddon via CnC-List
Edd,

Until last weekend I would have said no. Then

Spent about an hour checking everything because selector switches "never go
bad" By process of elimination confirmed that it was the switch. I could
initially get power on 2 or all, then only on 2.

When I went to remove the leads from the back of the old switch the plastic
just crumbled. Likely the casing had cracked from age and this didn't hold
things in intimate contact.

Never heard of one going bad, thought they were infinite life but apparently
not.

Defender doesn't carry the Perko switches. They carry Blue Seas. The mount
holes on the Blue Seas line up to the Perko that likely came on your boat.
There are some gaps in the surround casing on the switch I purchased that
will transmit noise into the cabin from the engine compartment. Look
carefully at the options, so you don't repeat my error on that front.

Installed the new switch and everything is ducky regarding electrical
function.

Listers,

Has anyone ever had a Battery-Selector Switch go bad on them?

Strange thing happened on the Enterprise last night after racing
and preparing to go home. As I moved the selector from ALL to Battery 1,
everything shut down. Going back to ALL or Battery 2, everything came back
on again.

I checked the voltage on 1 before I left and saw 12.35 volts (we
were running lights and all for a while post-racing.) Certainly enough to
power the lights that I had switched on.

My first guess is that it's the switch, but I'd welcome any
suggestions or other things to investigate from the wisdom of the group.

All the best,

Edd

I'm sure many of you know this but what a great company! I left a simple
question about determining the fabric of my Doyle sails so I could figure
out what to use to clean the mildew stains on their "info" email address. I
heard back from Janet Doyle (my assumption is an owner or executive at
least) who referred me to the guy that runs the sail loft (Bill) who called
me and offered to have me bring my sails down so he could look at them and
let me know what, if any options I had to clean them. These are old Kevlar
racing sails that have probably begun delaminating but he said we may be
able to get them looking a little better. Frankly the mildew stains are not
that bad. I was just hoping for an easy solution to having at least clean
sails.

I am impressed at the level of service they offer and it is obvious they
know their stuff. It is also helpful that they are 30 minutes from my
marina.

My 2 cents

Re: Stus-List Traveler components

2014-09-15 Thread kirk sneddon via CnC-List
Very happy with the quality and service from Garhauer.

I also worked with Guido. I replaced my traveler this spring. I sent them
my old track and they used it as a drill template, so installation was easy
with no new holes to drill.

The Garhauer cars are low friction, and high quality. With the increased
mechanical advantage and continuous line it was a major improvement for
modest sum.

Burt,

You should have several options.

You might consider talking to Guido or Mark at Garhauer Marine. They may be
able to make you a new and better car for a reasonable price.

I'm assuming there are sheaves on the ends of the car? How much room is
between the sheaves? Enough to install a padeye with two fasteners? That
would hold up to the loads better than a single point attachment system.

Your description doesn't sound like a Harken car. More like a Merriman or a
Schaefer.

enjoyable considering the stark accommodations. Learned a few things about
life aboard the new to us 33 footer. Only real issue was the traveler broke
over-night. The broken component is a stainless steel eye bolt in the center
of the car that is used to attach the mainsheet block. It goes through the
car and is secured by a nut on the bottom. I am not sure this is original
design or hardware. Can’t find a traveler car on the interwebs that looks
anything like mine. I assumed it was Harken as everything else on the boat
is. It is a very simple 4:1 arrangement with 8 captive rollers that ride on
the track. The hole that the eyebolt goes through looks like it was threaded
once. I ended up using a 5/16 stainless eye bolt that was a close enough fit
but it is definitely a temporary solution. Does anyone have a source that
might have the correct components or am I looking at a new traveler track,
ends, blocks and car?

I am in Glen Head, which isn't that far from your neck of the woods. If you
run into problem with plan A, let me know and we can get the multiplier in

Tedd, Josh

Great. I'll try Ted's method next time I go so I shoudn't need to get the
multiplier.  It's the standard keel and the mast is out so I can get to the
forward nut.

Thanks.

Torquing the keel nuts on a C&C
29-2 is a one person job if you use a shorter extension than the one you
describe. I assume you have the standard 5'-3" draft model which has a
larger and deeper bilge than the 4'-0" shoal draft version. The extension
doesn't have to be so long as to raise the torque wrench above the settee.
Just get a long enough extension so that the wrench clears the top of the
cabin sole. Sit on the sole with the end of wrench handle facing aft.
Brace your legs against the vertical face of the settee and your back
against the settee on the opposite side. This will give you enough leverage
to reach the 350 ft. lb.
torque on the largest bolts. You'll need a 12" long extension for those
nuts. Don't forget the nut hidden under the mast. That's the one that makes
the "smile" if you neglect to torque it on a regular basis.
