I am also thinking about doing my cockpit as I find it slippery when healed
over. Does anyone have a sense of how the smooth compares to the routed
surface for traction? Dave

Cockpit seems like a good use for it.

Thanks Dennis,
That stuff looks like the decks added to surfboards and SUPs. I might do my
cockpit with it?

As part of a project on a client's boat, I was looking at EVA foam decking.
There's some interesting stuff out there. The list has often mentioned KiwiGrip
to replace nonskid. Some of the hardcore racers in my area are using the foam
decking. You can even buy pre-cut kits for some popular racers (Melges, Viper,
etc.).

Not a lot of color or surface choices yet. However you can get camo.

You can also get sheets and cut for your own application. Here's some
providers, there are more.

Couple racers said they really like raptor deck. It's cool, grippy and
comfortable. Said lots of time they race barefoot on it.

Re: Stus-List EVA foam deck nonskid

2015-08-01 Thread Peter Fell via CnC-List
They use EVA foam for windsurfer booms so it’s pretty durable. And it’s the
same stuff you see used on broom, rake, shovel handles, bike handles, etc. I’m
thinking of using some to wrap my steering wheel instead of one of those
stupid-expensive leather kits. Only thing is the actual boom ‘wrap’ they sell
seems only to come in black. I think blue would look better (match dodger, sail
cover, etc.) I keep meaning to go ask at the foam shop to see if they can
source it.

Perhaps try putting a yoga mat or a camping sleep mat out in the sun and check
to see how hot it gets.

Feedback from the racers says it doesn't get hot in the lighter colors. Said
it was cooler than fiberglass deck.

No experience with longevity. Melges sells Raptor Deck aftermarket kits for
their boats so they like it.

Re: Stus-List EVA foam deck nonskid

2015-08-01 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
The EVA foam actually performs better than kiwi-grip for traction tests.
My only concerns were how long will it last, how long will the adhesive
last, and what is left on the deck if you go to remove it? I also worried
about how hot it might get and how it would look after it weathered a few
seasons. All if those concerns pushed me toward kiwi-grip which I'm quite
happy with.
