Re: Stus-List Bermuda to Norfolk

2013-07-01 Thread Della Barba, Joe

I didn't wreck any, but my brother and some other crew did. My brother crashed
on the way to the dive boat, so I wrapped his leg with a garbage bag and duct
tape to keep blood from attracting sharks. This seemed like a GREAT idea at age
16 LOL.
As for cruising, I have a Cruising Guide to Bermuda around someplace. You
certainly can do this and there are places to go, but it isn't like say the
Chesapeake or even the BVIs. There is Saint George at one end and Hamilton at
the other. Think Annapolis and Baltimore scaled down with nice blue water. In
between are coves you can anchor in, but the whole island is developed and
residential. There are no real isolated coves that I can recall and the nicest
beaches are obviously facing the ocean and you are not going to want to anchor
off a beach exposed like that. So the most likely cruise would be going from
one end to the other with maybe a midpoint stop. Be prepared to spend . The
last time I was there we had no defined date to leave, it was stay until the
cash was at 0 and then go. We left a lot earlier than I thought we would!

Like Joe said, there isn't a lot of cruising in Bermuda. There are
a number of anchorages but outside of the yacht clubs and St. George's
harbour, you won't see many transients. Many transients or racers
simply stay in St. George's. (Which is like going to NYC and staying
 in Queen's the whole time)

If you sail there though, it's certainly worthwhile to bring the boat
over to Hamilton. . From Hamilton, you can get to any place on the
island by bus, taxi, or rented scooter. (No rental cars in BDA).

There's good diving, snorkeling, eating, beaches, and more. Just be
aware that it ain't cheap there. Everything on the island is
shipped/flown in and there's a 30% duty (plus freight) on imports.

If I was planning a trip, I would think 2 weeks to explore the island
would be plenty. Sail over, explore, sail home - would be a great 4
week vacation. Just do it early enough to avoid hurricane season.

A better trip (if you have time) would be Norfolk to BDA late in the
season. (Nov 1). Hang out for a while and then sail BDA to BVI over
Christmas. (But then all of a sudden it's New Year's and you're
stuck in the BVI. That would suck.)

I have sailed Annapolis to Bermuda 3 times. Bermuda is *AN* island, not a

water are fantastic. Sailing can be great, but not a lot of people sail
 place-to-place once they get there.

I've never sailed Bermuda, but I've sailed the BVI's and the Bahamas. I
prefer the BVI's for the sailing and the destinations. What's Bermuda like
compared to the BVI's? Wind? Destinations? Is it one island or are there
 lots of places to go?

I've sailed to or from Bermuda 8 times and have spent quite a bit of
time on the island over the years.

I recommend you and everyong sail down there and enjoy it.

only had a couple of hours to play tourist and felt cheated, Bermuda is
 the
lushest, greenest, friendliest place I've been in over 30 years of

 Fred,

I was only there for about 20 hours and spent 18 on the boat getting it
ready or sleeping. I liked what little I saw. Even the Customs agents
 were
 friendly.

We were at the Dinghy Club by ourselves, as the 1-2 racers had left that

Stus-List Bermuda to Norfolk

2013-06-27 Thread Joel Aronson
I completed my sail yesterday on a Pacific Seacraft 37. We saw almost
everything in terms of weather- winds from 0 to 60, seas, 0 to 10! I've
read about Gulf crossings with heavy wind and seas and thunderstorms from
out of nowhere. We hit the trifecta - had all 3. Details are probably too
long to post, but are at at www.facebook.com/TheOffice35.

It will be different next year when I do the A2B!

Here are the numbers for my slightly larger LF38; all lines led back to the
cockpit. This is from an order I placed with Cajun Ropes in 2007 -- they had
all the lengths on file. I have since upsized the mainsheet from 3/8 to
7/16, as it was slipping in the clutch:

 S/V Oceanis (1979 CC Landfall 38)

Main halyard: 105 feet of 7/16 XLE, white w/blue
 flecks, headboard shackle

Jib halyard (port): 110 feet of 7/16 XLE, white w/red
 flecks, swivel snap shackle

Jib halyard (starboard): 110 feet of 7/16 XLE, green
 w/white flecks, swivel snap shackle

Spinnaker halyard: 110 feet of 7/16 XLE, blue w/white
 flecks, swivel snap shackle

Spinnaker pole lift: 80 feet of 3/8 XLE, white w/blue
 flecks, swivel snap shackle

Reef 1: 50 feet of 3/8 XLE, white w/green flecks,
 whipped ends

Reef 2: 75 feet of 3/8 XLE, white w/red flecks,
 whipped ends

Mainsheet: 55 feet of 3/8 XLE, white w/red flecks,
 small eye one end

Port traveler: 20 feet of 3/8 XLE, white w/red
 flecks, small eye one end

Starboard traveler: 20 feet of 3/8 XLE, white w/red
 flecks, small eye one end

Furling line: 60 feet of 5/16 XLE, red w/white flecks

 Jib sheets: (2) x 45 feet of 9/16 XLE, white w/red
 flecks, whipped ends

Outhaul: 15 feet of 5/16 XLE, white w/red flecks
