Jake,
Having the old stripes is key. Without them it would practically be
impossible (laser levels?)
I wasn't lying about four hours of taping. It takes forever. Use the
best of the 3M blue tape and just move along the line. It has enough of a
stretch so you can do the length of the entire side without having to break it
up. The tricky part is the curve on the stern. Will take time and several
pieces, but patience will yield great results.
Make sure you shake up the paint a lot to thoroughly mix the
polyurethane. Apply with a roller for extra smooth surfaces and follow with a
foam brick to get rid of any air bubbles or imperfections. I was worried about
the poly solidifying on the tape, so as soon as I was done, I pulled the tape
off.
As it dries, it glosses up and you find yourself staring at the hull in
amazement.

All the best,
Edd

Listers,  This past weekend, after several years of trying product
and product, I redid the Enterprise's boot stripes from their heavily faded and
ugly-looking originals (see original look).  And, after much
deliberation and hours with Photoshop in deciding the new look, we decided on
steel gray. Check the finished look here.   4 hours of taping, 1
hour of painting and 15 minutes getting the tape off. What a job, but VERY
happy with the finished results. Sleek as ever!  So now I'm left
with two unopened quarts of Brightside Red and Dark Blue. Does anyone want
them? No cost -- just send me a PDF FedEx or UPS shipping label and they're
yours.

The problem that I have with taping
straight lines is when I draw the tape off the roll say 2 or 3 feet at a time
and lay it down with my left hand while holding the roll taught with my right

the tape so that when I lay that section down the edge is distorted.  How
do others get around that problem? Is 3M fine line tape the answer to that?

Re: Stus-List Boot Stripes -- Anyone need Brightside Red and Blue?

2013-04-23 Thread Russ & Melody

Hi Dwight,

I use two people for this task. That way I can get far out for a good
view of the fair line, while holding the tape roll, and say, "Tack
it there." to the friend. My walking path is an arc from stern to bow
to keep the tape landing where I want it.

In no time you can offer them a beer, after getting both sides'
waterline or boot stripe fair and true.

I used some of that, but only because of size -- the white area in between
the boot stripes can get thin and the blue tape was too thick (1 inch).
Everywhere else, however, the blue ta[e was more than sufficient -- VERY
straight lines.

Andy,

I used some of that, but only because of size -- the white area in
between the boot stripes can get thin and the blue tape was too thick (1 inch).
Everywhere else, however, the blue ta[e was more than sufficient -- VERY
straight lines.

I would be inclined to use the 3M Fine Line tape. It's plastic and will
stretch around the curves in the stripes. But bring money; that stuff is

Re: Stus-List Boot Stripes -- Anyone need Brightside Red and Dk Blue?

2013-04-23 Thread Edd Schillay

Edd

And, after much deliberation and hours with Photoshop in

4 hours of taping, 1 hour of painting and 15 minutes getting the

So now I'm left with two unopened quarts of Brightside Red and

Your originals look just like mine do currently. Nice job!
I would take you up on the paint offer but I won't be able to get to
painting new boot stripes until next year and that wouldn't be fair to the
next guy that might get some use out of that paint now.

That looks nice Edd, but if you don't stay away from those large suns, this
new paint may get burnt out as well . . .

Maybe you could buy some protect-shun -

Listers,

This past weekend, after several years of trying product and
product, I redid the Enterprise's boot stripes from their heavily faded and
ugly-looking originals (see
<http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PPVtbhIlO7g/UG2lYMX0jfI/Bm0/BmtAWuiDrUM/s
1600/spot2.JPG> original look).

And, after much deliberation and hours with Photoshop in
deciding the new look, we decided on steel gray. Check
<https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/15162917/steelgraystripes.jpg> the
finished look here.

4 hours of taping, 1 hour of painting and 15 minutes getting the
tape off. What a job, but VERY happy with the finished results. Sleek as
ever!

So now I'm left with two unopened quarts of Brightside Red and
Dark Blue. Does anyone want them? No cost -- just send me a PDF FedEx or UPS
shipping label and they're yours.

  All the best,

  Edd
