Chuck,

Still in the planning stage. My boat should
have been hauled Thursday but the tide was so
low I could not get the boat to
the travel lift. It should be hauled at high
tide Monday.

The HF bearing separator kit (or a borrowed
one) might be the easy way out. I'll check the
local auto supply places. Thanks for the tip!
Otherwise I'll cut and drill 2 end plates and
buy some threaded rod. Once I see the
clearance I'll decide what to use for the
sleeve. I'm hoping a piece of PVC will fit,
but I doubt it.

I'll remember the set screws!!

still need to make a split sleeve to go over the shaft to press against the
metal part ot the bearing. 1" pipe nipple or 1" rigid conduit cut square.
Another idea is to assemble a bunch of keyways the same length and tape them
or hose clamp them around the shaft to act as a sleeve.

Re: Stus-List Cutlass bearing removal tool

2013-12-19 Thread Joel Aronson
The boat was hauled Wednesday. Too bad, as it will be near 70 degrees
Sunday.

The set screws are clearly visible on the port side. Now I need time to
remove the Maxprop and try my bearing removal tool, but it won't be this
weekend. I'll take photos as I go and share them (and the tool) if things
go well!

Chuck,

Still in the planning stage. My boat should have been hauled Thursday but the
tide was so low I could not get the boat to the travel lift. It should be
hauled at high tide Monday.

The HF bearing separator kit (or a borrowed one) might be the easy way out.
I'll check the local auto supply places. Thanks for the tip! Otherwise I'll cut
and drill 2 end plates and buy some threaded rod. Once I see the clearance I'll
decide what to use for the sleeve. I'm hoping a piece of PVC will fit, but I
doubt it.

I'll remember the set screws!!

I googled Bearing Separator Harbor Freight and found several choices in

Advanced Auto Parts, Pep Boys, Auto Center may lend you the tool? You'll still
need to make a split sleeve to go over the shaft to press against the metal
part ot the bearing. 1" pipe nipple or 1" rigid conduit cut square. Another
idea is to assemble a bunch of keyways the same length and tape them or hose
clamp them around the shaft to act as a sleeve.

May try Grainger. My mechanic does not have one but is asking around too. I
think I can make one out of some thick G10 and threaded rod. I have the G10

Re: Stus-List Cutlass bearing removal tool

2013-12-13 Thread Chuck S
Option A: Make your own: Harbor Freight and other discount tool suppliers sell
bearing pullers. The puller is cheap but you need a piece behind the bearing
called a bearing separater and a 6" pipe nipple cut in half to clamp around the
shaft to apply pressure to the bearing properly. You might need $70 before
you're done.

Option B: Get a price from a local engine mechanic to change the cutless
bearing you provide. If you remove the fairing around the strut to remove the
set screws and remove the prop and provide the new bearing, he already has all
the tools and might do it for a 30 pack? Worth a try. A friend hired a pro to
do it for $100 rather than screw with it himself and he felt it was worth not
having to chase down the right tool. I think you could get a better price if
you ask a mechanic working in the yard already.

I'm trying to avoid the step of "removing the shaft". Internet wisdom also says
you can make your own tool, but I don't know if I can find something sized
properly to push out the old one. If the yard has the tool I may pay them to do

Re: Stus-List Cutlass bearing removal tool

2013-12-13 Thread Jake Brodersen
Joel,

I've done this job twice. Drop the rudder, pull the shaft (leave the prop
on), and the cut the old bearing to peel it out. I used a threaded shaft
and washers to install the new one. It's an easy job, except for the
rudder. Getting at the quadrant is a pain, but I always use never-seize on
the bolts. They come out easily now.

Easiest would be the in-hull puck glued to the hull in a spot without core.
Best would be the thru-hull, your choice of material. Forget the
transom-mount unit, you don't have anywhere to mount it.

They have a thru hull plastic or bronze. they have a in-hull puck and a

Joel,

Here's one with dimensions, etc.  You could print it, take it to a machine shop
and get an estimate.  Only problem, it's in German.

http://www.randpsystems.co.uk/seawolf/engines.htm

Scroll to the bottom of the page.  There's a link there.  It didn't copy well.
