Re: Stus-List OMG! We're dragging!

2014-12-04 Thread Marek Dziedzic via CnC-List
I had a quick look at some of the anchor dragging apps mentioned here and the
“Anchor Alarm” does exactly the same thing as any of the Garmin anchor alarms –
sounds an alarm if you move more than X from the current position (at the time
of setting the alarm).

However, the Drag Queen can do the same, but additionally, you can provide
(manually) the initial position. This is not yet what Bill wanted (set a point
on the map and draw a circle), but functionally, provides the same result (with
a bit more complicated user interface). A warning, though: the Drag Queen use a
lot of GPS cycles (in “high battery usage” mode); this may mean that you better
have your smartphone connected to a charger or at least fully charged, before
going to sleep. There is no easy way of telling (at least with the tools I
have) how long would the battery last. But this depends heavily on the way how
the application was written (my experience with tracking apps (recording a
track) shows that two apps doing exactly the same (logging waypoints in a 10 s
interval) can discharge battery at a very different rate (one lasting 8-10 h,
the other just under half of that).

Anchor Watch (free with ads or $4) is even more interesting, allowing to set
the anchor position by bearing and distance (chain length + water depth) from
the current boat position and to set the “drift radius” by sector (longer in
some directions and shorter in others). Anyone willing to do the field test?

Tim,

There’s an app called “Drag Queen” that does a pretty good job of keeping track
of your anchoring location. Set it up when you drop the hook and it will keep
track of your distance from the anchor and let you know if you drag.

  Anchored off boardwalk at Pensacola Beach last night. 30 20.25 N 87 08.41 W.
Dead calm, clear night. Set anchor alarm on GPS. Depth alarm also set.

At 5am this morning I was startled awake by beep beep beep. Leapt up, came
into cockpit and heard it again. It was the backup alarm on a garbage truck on
the island emptying dumpsters. :(. Crap!

I've often wished for an anchor alarm app for my smart phone or GPS
chartplotter that would work like the range alarm on my RADAR where you
set a ring of a particular range, rather than just a directional

sound. Seems to me that GPS makers have missed the boat on what would be
a really great feature to use as a sales pitch.

the circle drawn around where the anchor is located, not around the
boat's present position when I set the alarm. This would be done while
looking at the chart, so you could start at the anchor location and drag
out a perimeter from there that is just a bit more than your scope, to
allow for tide changes. I didn't see a way to accomplish that with any
of the units I have, but perhaps I missed something. I'll look again.

Not sure about the details of operation. If you can't choose the center of
the radius on the display you might need to put the boat close to the anchor
and then set the alarm. I only used mine a few times. The radius if I
remember correctly was set as a distance from the starting point, not
dragged on the screen but again, I am just not sure. Memory is the second
thing to go and I forget what the first is.

you can dial it in. In theory you could leave an old phone on the boat
powered up with the app running and it will call/email/SMS you to let you

repeat option. The latest update has the ability to have the app call you.

 Bill,

There is an IOS app, Boat Monitor that does this. It will also send email
or SMS alerts (assuming you have one device on board / one with you
ashore). I used it a couple of years ago when we were eating ashore and
expecting a major wind shift in the anchorage. It helped me relax and
 enjoy my lunch.

Re: Stus-List OMG! We're dragging!

2014-12-03 Thread Marek Dziedzic via CnC-List
Bill,

You are right. The circle is drawn from your current position at a selectable
(settable) radius. I don’t know of any way to move the centre of that circle
(to where you want it to be). The only option I can imagine at this moment is
to move the boat to the anchor and set the alarm there. Of course, it makes
little sense.

However, if you are prepared for that operation ahead of the time, you can set
the alarm, when you are dropping the anchor. It should be a simple operation of
pressing a key or two. Even if the boat is moving slowly, a few metres this or
that way should not matter (unless your anchorage is that tight).

Not sure about the details of operation. If you can’t choose the center of the
radius on the display you might need to put the boat close to the anchor and
then set the alarm. I only used mine a few times. The radius if I remember
correctly was set as a distance from the starting point, not dragged on the
screen but again, I am just not sure… Memory is the second thing to go and I
forget what the first is.

I have several Garmins of various ages, including a GPSMAP76s, a GPSMAP 276c
and a GPSMAP 541. I'll have to take another look at them. I want the circle
drawn around where the anchor is located, not around the boat's present
position when I set the alarm. This would be done while looking at the chart,
so you could start at the anchor location and drag out a perimeter from there
that is just a bit more than your scope, to allow for tide changes. I didn't
see a way to accomplish that with any of the units I have, but perhaps I missed
something. I'll look again.

Re: Stus-List OMG! We're dragging!

2014-12-03 Thread Bill Bina via CnC-List

Thanks, Marek. I'm pretty busy during
anchoring, since I'm often by myself. I usually just hit the MOB
key when the anchor gets dropped, and after I am sure I am firmly
set, I make a waypoint where the MOB position is and delete the
MOB. I then simply "navigate to waypoint" which gives me a running
graphical and numerical account of the distance from that
waypoint. The boat slowly paints a smile on the chart as it swings
back and forth. I can tell at a glance if the smile starts getting
fat it means the boat is getting further from the mark. It also
shows me if the boat has swung around to a new direction. No
alarm, though. Seems to me it shouldn't be that hard to add an
alarm feature tied to the waypoint that would mark a circle on the
chart that could be made any size you wish. THAT is what I feel
would be a very effective selling feature. Looks like I may be
able to find an app for my android smartphone that will do this.
I'd really prefer to have it in my dedicated chartplotter which
doesn't get moved around on board, or carried to shore.

Hi
I am using iOS Anchor! On iPhone and iPad.

It does
- allow moving the anchor location
- alarm perimeter
- alarm means by visual only, sound only, email and phone or any combination

Can wake one from deep sleep but the scary thought would be depending totally
on this!

I don't have an alarm, but have had good results using my Garmin 640 GPS
plotter when anchoring. I simply make a waypoint after the boat settles down.
The 640 can be brought into the cabin, making it easy to check the boat's
location and distance to waypoint after dinner or before bed to see if we've
moved.

Thanks, Marek. I'm pretty busy during anchoring, since I'm often by myself. I
usually just hit the MOB key when the anchor gets dropped, and after I am sure
I am firmly set, I make a waypoint where the MOB position is and delete the
MOB. I then simply navigate to waypoint which gives me a running graphical
and numerical account of the distance from that waypoint. The boat slowly
paints a smile on the chart as it swings back and forth. I can tell at a glance
if the smile starts getting fat it means the boat is getting further from the
mark. It also shows me if the boat has swung around to a new direction. No
alarm, though. Seems to me it shouldn't be that hard to add an alarm feature
tied to the waypoint that would mark a circle on the chart that could be made
any size you wish. THAT is what I feel would be a very effective selling
feature. Looks like I may be able to find an app for my android smartphone that
will do this. I'd really prefer to have it in my dedicated chartplotter which
doesn't get moved around on board, or carried to shore.

Bill,
You are right.

Tim,

There’s an app called “Drag Queen” that does a pretty good job of keeping track
of your anchoring location. Set it up when you drop the hook and it will keep
track of your distance from the anchor and let you know if you drag.

Bill,

There is an IOS app, Boat Monitor that does this. It will also send email or
SMS alerts (assuming you have one device on board / one with you ashore). I
used it a couple of years ago when we were eating ashore and expecting a major
wind shift in the anchorage. It helped me relax and enjoy my lunch.

Reminds me when I anchored one summer evening behind Charles Island,
Connecticut side of Long Island Sound and in the morning I was awakened by
men's voices talking and laughing like they were right next to my boat. I
thought we dragged anchor! I lept on deck and checked my bearings to find we
were on station. I rechecked the charts and saw an ismuth that ran from the
mainland to the island at about 2 to 3 feet depth.

Dawn revealed there were about a dozen fishermen standing knee to waist deep on
the sandbar, fishing about 50 feet from my boat. Weird.

Many years ago I had a new autopilot and was cruising parallel to Northport

minutes later I heard the autopilot engage and it made a 90 degree turn
directly toward the beach! Of course this was a Sunday so tech support was
unavailable. Monday I called tech support and was told not to use the autopilot
closer than 2 miles from shore because garage door openers can cause it to
change course!! I didn't get a beep, beep, beep, wish I had.Michael CottonS/V
