I had a very similar experience to Joe on Coquina when we bought a $60,000 boat 
recently. When I started asking questions about the boat, the selling broker 
actually told me that the commission he was getting from the sale wasn’t worth 
his time, and that he wasn’t working for me. He had zero interest in helping us 
get any history on the boat.   

We did meet a broker that we liked a lot as we looked at other boats, and wish 
in retrospect we had enlisted him as our buyer’s rep. That would have at least 
spared us from  deal with the selling broker, who was rather difficult to work 
with. And it wouldn’t have cost us any more than we ended up paying.

The issue you may encounter is that it is just as much work to sell a $25,000 
boat as a $500,000 boat, so when brokers are busy you may not get as much help 
with the lower end of their listings as you would have a couple of years ago. 
Looking at a boat that was about $50K, the broker told me he listed it mainly 
as a favor and hardly wanted to bother with something that cheap.

Some, if not many, of the boat finance companies charge different rates based 
on age.  Typically 20 years is the break point.   Over 20 years is a higher rate

Re financing: My credit union will loan on boats 200 years old, they really 
don’t care about age as long as there is survey to provide some idea of the 
value of the boat. This is not true of most lenders, so make sure you can get 
the money on X year boat before wasting your time on it.

Adam,

+1 to Josh’s comments — it really helps if you are looking to borrow money to 
purchase the boat and if there are murky title and inspection issues. But, as 
Josh says, if you are capable and comfortable doing these things yourself (as 
many seasoned boat owners already are) then it’s really not necessary.

PS — If you are looking for slightly newer and larger than your current 1981 
36, suggest you look at a 1990 37/40. I know of one that you can get for a 
steal — way lower than market value.

comfortable with handling those things yourself then I would consider foregoing 
the broker.  Especially and specifically if the boat is local to you.  Going 
into using a broker thinking that they are "looking out" for your interests as 
well or better than you would is IMO hopeful at best.  The broker gets paid 
when they close the deal, not based on how much they saved you or the number of 
hours worked or the number of phone calls made.  It is in the interest of the 
seller, the sellers agent, AND the buyers agent to close the deal quickly and 
at the highest price.  The only person who wins by moving slow and methodical, 
searching for the best boat and the best deal is the buyer (you).

like real estate) looking our for my interests or is that an unnecessary
