Stus-List Removing caulk residue
Hello all, I'm in the process of replacing all my hatches. I've removed them and trying to clean the surface where they bed. I have the de-bond marine product. I applied that and scraped again but, there is still residue. Anyone have a secret method to get that surface clean? I'm going to try something abrasive like scotch Brite pads. Danny: Try using a small round wire brush on a drill..I did that on my hatches when I removed and replaced the seals and it worked fine.did not scratch or damage anything and did a superb job of removing and cleaning the old adhesive from the surface(s). get a 1" chisel, very carefully use it to scrape the surface clean. It might be best to round off the corners of the chisel if you are not sure of your hand... I've been carefully scraping with a single edge razor blade. It still leaves a residue... I'm thinking the caulk is probably silicone. McKanica makes a silicone remover that has worked very well for me. It's a gel that you put on the silicone. After an hour or so it breaks down and comes right off. It's on Amazon. Another reason to use good quality butyl tape IMHO. The old usually peels off easily and can be replaced with new without further cleaning of the surface. Since it doesn't come out of a tube like most caulks but comes off a roll, there is minimal mess in applying it and cleaning up the excess. You're preaching to the converted there. Re: Stus-List Removing caulk residue
Another vote for butyl tape. It depends on kind of caulk you are trying to remove. McKanica works pretty well on Silicone. If it's a urethane caulk, mechanical methods and Debond may work. Butyl tape will probably respond to mineral spirits, but is easy to remove mechanically, anyway. Re: Stus-List Removing caulk residue
Hello again, I just wanted to offer an update with regard to cleaning off the old caulk, So, I carefully scraped as much caulk as I could off with a razor blade. 2 of the hatches are located right in the non skid! (that sucked!) This ate up 2 boat days! Then, I got the McKanica Silicon caulk remover and spread that with an acid brush. ( I would not hesitate to use this again and would not spend as much time with the initial scraping) This made it so I could get the remaining stuff off with a plastic razor blade. I tried the DeBond but that doesn't work. I had it left over from the viking and I recall it not working very well then either. I swear, it took me about 2 hours to remove the hatches and another 3 boat work days just to clean off that F#$%ing caulk! Oh, I did have to use a SS wire brush, the one that is little bigger than a tooth brush, to get all the caulk out of the non skid areas. I did finish up with one of those magic eraser, Mr. clean, type things and then denatured alcohol. (almost wanted to take some swigs!) Anyway, I'm ready now to fill in the old holes, drill, plug, re-drill new holes and set WITH BUTYL TAPE. The amazing thing is that, the PO had the decks painted, and they did a really nice job. At forst I had thought they taped the hardware but, they removed it. that was maybe 6 years before I bought the boat, I can't imagine those hatches were in very good condition then either. The frames are great, but everything else is pretty sun beat. All the plastic is brittle and the lenses are very crazed. Anyway, Thanks again for the advice.
