Re: Stus-List Worn stanchion base sockets

2019-06-15 Thread Adrian Humphreys via CnC-List
A one inch diameter stanchion has a circumference of about three inches (pi x
d).

I notched the open ends 1/8 inch or so, about half way up, something like this:
___
|_ _|
  |_|

so when the plastic is bent around and inserted into the socket, there's an
open notch at the bottom where the ends meet. I lined up the notch with the
set-screw hole in the base. As I inserted the stanchion into the sleeved base,
I tried to twist equally in both directions to keep the notch lined up. The
dish detergent helps here.

I also had multiple holes in the stanchions for set screws, but only one lined
up vertically with the hole in the base. Go figure. Some set screws had been
forced, cross-threading the screw. For those, I chased the hole with 10-24 tap
and replaced the screw.

FWIW my stanchions come off in the fall to put the winter cover on and when
I was putting them back on I noticed there were two holes for the set screw
and a big dollop of what seemed like the sealant they used to seal the hull
and deck, in the bases. I pulled out the sealant and the stanchions would
sink a little deeper in the base and the set screw now goes into the upper

Agreed on the topping lift, I use a spinnaker halyard since the end of
the whisker pole is farther outboard than the spinnaker pole, slightly
less inward pull on the pole but probably doesn't make too much
difference.? The topping lift allows better control of the sail, IMHO,
especially in light air, you can take the weight off the sail and
control its shape.

themselves were tapped 10-24 thread.

Stus-List Worn stanchion base sockets

2019-04-02 Thread Adrian Humphreys via CnC-List
The stanchions are loose in the worn sockets of the plastic stanchion bases.

Before I order eight new ones, I'm wondering if anyone has tried filling the
socket with epoxy and either setting the stanchion in the wet epoxy, or letting
the epoxy set and re-drilling for the stanchion?

Thanks,

Adrian Humphreys
