Re: Stus-List winter in NS (and ON)

2014-01-06 Thread Marek Dziedzic
Not much to brag about, but I think we might take the cake for today’s weather:
- -5 C and freezing rain from midnight till 7:00
- +5 C and rain at 9:00
- dropping down (quickly) to –25 C tonight (it is already –5 C at 11:30)

I don’t even want to think about my driveway. There was about 10 mm of ice
covering it this morning. At night (-20 C?) there would be no way of removing
that ice (without anything short of a bulldozer) until it warms up.

If you can’t beat it, you have to join it. I am going skiing after work. The
master racing series starts tonight.

leaving the dream...

Lucky guy — NWS forecast for Minneapolis says:

...LIFE-THREATENING COLD TONIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY...

.DANGEROUSLY COLD ARCTIC AIR WILL CONTINUE TO MOVE SOUTHWARD INTO
THE AREA TONIGHT. TEMPERATURES OVER NORTHERN MINNESOTA AND NORTH
DAKOTA LATE THIS AFTERNOON WERE IN THE 15 TO 25 BELOW ZERO
RANGE...WITH WIND CHILL READINGS OF 35 TO 60 BELOW ZERO...AND THIS
AIR IS HEADED FOR THE LOCAL AREA TONIGHT.
TEMPERATURES WILL FALL INTO MINUS 20 TO MINUS 35 DEGREE RANGE
TONIGHT AND THE WINDS WILL INCREASE INTO THE 15 TO 30 MPH RANGE.
EXPECT THIS TO LEAD TO LIFE THREATENING WIND CHILLS OF 35 TO 60
BELOW ZERO. THESE DANGEROUSLY COLD WIND CHILLS WILL THEN PERSIST
THROUGH TUESDAY MORNING.
THIS IS A DANGEROUS AND HISTORIC COLD EVENT THAT HAS NOT BEEN
SEEN SINCE EARLY FEBRUARY 1996. ANY PRECAUTIONS THAT CAN BE TAKEN
TO KEEP PEOPLE AND ANIMALS INDOORS IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

The governor closed all public schools tomorrow, as a public safety measure.

2014-01-05 Thread Russ & Melody

Hi Dwight,

No doubt, I often remark, "Living the dream."
Your winter wonderland sounds like a nice place
to visit but I hate to wake up to a scene like that if it means going to work.

My old saying goes back a few years now, May 2008
Harmac Pulp mill was part of the Pope & Talbot
bankruptcy. A rag tag band of miscreants obtained
the mill through court proceedings and we've been
moving ahead ever since. So me and my mates have
gone from being simple employees to become industrialists (a 25% holding :)

She was like an old boat really. We got her up
and running for 30 million and then went ahead
and spent another 70 - 75 million on capital projects during the last 5 years.

For me it was not a difficult decision, stay and
sail all year round or work in the frozen tundra known as Alberta.

Still "Living the dream."

Cheers, Russ
