cobbler import command supports *some* Linux distributions, but
Scientific Linux is not one of them.
You can (1) create a distro signature for it or (2) add the distribution
manually mounting the ISO in
Cobbler server file system, rsync'ing it to /var/ftp and creating
corresponding distro/profile objects.

If you do (1), please contribute it back to the community.

Support for Scientific Linux Fermi should have been merged in about a
 year ago:

That patch was only for Fermi. From the OP it seems that this is plain SL,
which is included since a long time already.

Govind, since you are using a local mirror (/local/os_mirror/SL6x/), did you
mirror the whole SL6x directory as it lies on the SL mirrors (iow does it
include the addons, iso, os, updates folders)? In that case you should try
/local/os_mirror/SL6x/os/ as an import path.

You are right, my mistake. I was not able to see that SL was supported
by taking a quick look at

distros_signatures.json.

So, given the error message, one of those things happened:
 - Packages directory does not exist in path root
 - SL release rpm was searched recursively in path but was not found.
You can see the searched file name regular expression at the
version_file attribute of rhel6/rhel7 versions of

rhel breed in distros.signatures.json in Cobbler's code,

Could you look for these and provide feedback?

Hi! I'm actually in the progress of writing a blog post about this
 journey :)

I can't tell what iso you are using for this, so I'm just going to give
you my summary of how i got it working. Be sure to change the arch as
 necessary for your setup:

1: Import Fedora 21 Server netinstall as your distro (same commands
you ran above but with one of these isos:

 http://dl.fedoraproject.org/pub/fedora/linux/releases/21/Server/x86_64/iso/
 )
 2: Sync the Fedora/21/Everything repository (use --mirror-locally=False
if you can get away with it! :)
 cobbler repo add --name=fedora21-everything-64 --breed=yum
 --arch=x86_64 --mirror=
 http://dl.fedoraproject.org/pub/fedora/linux/releases/21/Everything/x86_64/os/
3: Now they have to be glued together. You need to copy the .treeinfo
and images directories from the distro into everything repo.
 cp -pr /var/www/cobbler/ks_mirror/fedora21/{.treeinfo,LiveOS,images}
 /var/www/cobbler/repo_mirror/fedora21-everything-64/
4: Then you need to edit the distro's tree path
 cobbler distro edit --name=fedora21-x86_64 --ksmeta=tree=http://
 @@http_server@@/cblr/repo_mirror/fedora21-everything-x86_64

I came up with this at like 1am last night, so i might not have caught
everything here. Plus there is probably a was better method. Maybe
manually syncing the everything repo, adding the distro bits, and then
using that to do the distro import? Would definitely leave cobbler setup
 cleaner, imho.

 Hello,

I'm trying to import the fedora 21 distro from rsync or dvd with:

 cobbler import --path=/mnt/iso --name=fedora21 --arch=x86_64

After, I tried to add the distro uploaded before with:

 cobbler distro add --name=fedora21-x86_64 --ksmeta=tree=ftp://nas-
 deploy.ll.iac.es/media/fedora/releases/21/Fedora/x86_64/os/
 kernel=/var/www/cobbler/ks_mirror/fedora21-x86_64/images/pxeboot/vmlinuz
 initrd=/var/www/cobbler/ks_mirror/fedora21-x86_64/images/pxeboot/initrd.img
 --arch=x86_64 --breed=redhat --os-version=fedora21

and it seems to be ok, but if I do: cobbler distro list or cobbler
 report, no distros appear...

Is there anyone could have imported the fedora21 distro? how?

 Thank you and best regards,

Hi! I'm actually in the progress of writing a blog post about this
 journey :)

I can't tell what iso you are using for this, so I'm just going to give
you my summary of how i got it working. Be sure to change the arch as
 necessary for your setup:

1: Import Fedora 21 Server netinstall as your distro (same commands you
ran above but with one of these isos:
 http://dl.fedoraproject.org/pub/fedora/linux/releases/21/Server/x86_64/iso/
 )
2: Sync the Fedora/21/Everything repository (use --mirror-locally=False if
you can get away with it! :)
 cobbler repo add --name=fedora21-everything-64 --breed=yum --arch=x86_64
 --mirror=
 http://dl.fedoraproject.org/pub/fedora/linux/releases/21/Everything/x86_64/os/
3: Now they have to be glued together. You need to copy the .treeinfo and
images directories from the distro into everything repo.
 cp -pr /var/www/cobbler/ks_mirror/fedora21/{.treeinfo,LiveOS,images}
 /var/www/cobbler/repo_mirror/fedora21-everything-64/
4: Then you need to edit the distro's tree path
 cobbler distro edit --name=fedora21-x86_64 --ksmeta=tree=http://
 @@http_server@@/cblr/repo_mirror/fedora21-everything-x86_64

I came up with this at like 1am last night, so i might not have caught
everything here. Plus there is probably a was better method. Maybe
manually syncing the everything repo, adding the distro bits, and then
using that to do the distro import? Would definitely leave cobbler setup
 cleaner, imho.

For what its worth my quickly thrown up blog post just went live:

I’ve been trying to puzzle out the regex in the version file but our iso is
rhel-server-5.11-i386-dvd.iso. This doesn’t look much like the regex in the

Re: [cobbler] cobbler import and available-as option

2012-11-06 Thread Jason Graham
I guess I am confused why you have to specify a local path. When I tried it
this it still seems to need the local path. I get that it will use the
available-as path when your node is being built. I do not get why it
still needs the local path. Is this so it can grab the pxe images? If that
is the case, would it be better to add the distro and profile manually (not
through the import command) so I only need to copy the pxe images to the
cobbler server?

I want to have as little on the cobbler server as possible.

Re: [cobbler] cobbler import and available-as option

2012-11-06 Thread Tom Brown

I guess I am confused why you have to specify a local path. When I tried it
this it still seems to need the local path. I get that it will use the
available-as path when your node is being built. I do not get why it still
needs the local path. Is this so it can grab the pxe images? If that is the
case, would it be better to add the distro and profile manually (not through
the import command) so I only need to copy the pxe images to the cobbler
 server?

I want to have as little on the cobbler server as possible.

Yes. The local path is for the kernel and initrd for pxe.

Very little is actually on the cobbler server.

will always be available the systems we build. Per documentation the
--available-as option should do this for me. Also, from documentation
examples it shows that it should work over HTTP. The syntax I am using is...

 cobbler import
 --path=http://repo.myserver.com:/artifactory/rhel-6.3-base/x86_64/
 --name=rhel6.3
 --avaialble-as=http://repo.myserver.com:/artifactory/rhel-6.3-base/x86_64/

The import task fails. The log shows it tried to use rsync. Does it not work
over http or am I using the wrong syntax?

The --path must be local, or it must be an rsync path. HTTP/FTP are
not supported (but work fine in the --available-as part).

cobbler.log shows that the rsync apparently didn't run because the very next
command fails. If I copy the rsync command from the log and run it manually,
it works just fine every time, and re-running the cobbler import after the
 manual rsync runs to completion.

What might be causing the rsync within the import command to fail?

Just ran into this today after working through some other issues with
users in #cobbler. So what's going on here is a bit weird, and I'll
try and step through it.

The way I reproduced this is as follows:

1. Mount an ISO (doesn't matter where)
2. Run cobbler import on the mounted path
3. Unmount and mount a different ISO to the same path
4. At this point cobblerd continues seeing the old ISO file system,
despite the fact that it's no longer mounted.
5. Bounce the cobblerd service and things start working fine.

In your case, what's happening is cobbler is still seeing the empty
mount path. At this point I'm unsure what's causing this, but it seems
limited to those running cobblerd on Fedora 17.

So for now, the workaround is to bounce cobblerd every time you mount
an ISO (far from ideal, I know) and I'll start digging into why this
is happening. I suspect it's something going on with
systemd/systemctl.

If I run that exact rsync command as root (from the same shell where I
attempted the import) the rsync runs to completion, and I can then re-run
the import and it too will run to completion. I'm just unsure why the rsync
works for my interactive shell, but not when run as part of this command.

Oups, sorry I didn't catch that information.

The issue is that in order for the auto-detection to work, cobbler has
to have something to scan. The easiest fix for that was to have it
download everything temporarily (with obvious downsides...). The fix

In the meantime, you can just delete the tree in ks_mirror after doing

Thank you for the clarification.

The --path option is ignored when you use --available-as (it should
probably print an error when both options are used like that).

Yes, this was changed because of the way the import modules work. It's
a chicken and egg problem, because the rsync now has to happen before
the scan can be executed to figure out what the breed is. One of the
things I plan to tweak is to provide a list of files for rsync to grab
instead of the entire tree, so that it only grabs stuff like the
kernel/initrd/etc.
