[cobirds] White-winged Crossbills-Grandview- Fort Collins

2010-01-09 Thread 87211...@gmail.com
Hi all! It's been so long since I posted anything I had to re-learn
the process. So I hope this is correct. A fortuitously short trip
finding this couple. As I left two times previous without seeing
them. I happened to park right under the spruce tree the White-winged
Crossbills were feeding in today. This was around 2:45pm and the sun
shining from the west made for perfect observation conditions. I
never heard them at all due to their proximity to the raucous Mountain
Chickadee and Pine Siskin hordes they were intermingling with. After
about 5 minutes they flew off to the west and I couldn't refind them.
I saw them in a tree in Section 7 but just of the road that bisects
Sections 7 and 9 on the South side of the cemetery. Curiously, I did
not see or hear a Red Crossbill at all. A good lifer to start the
year. A thanks to Dave Leatherman for finding the birds. I think
Dave is responsible for more birds on my life list than I am!

Good birding to you all!

[cobirds] audio diary: Boulder Christmas Count

2010-01-09 Thread rostrhamus
A pleasant re-capturing of the 2009 Boulder Christmas Bird Count
featuring current compiler Bill Schmoker, and the original compiler
(at least in my experience!) Bill Kaempfer is now available on the
Boulder County Nature Assoc. website. It nicely sums up the day's
adventure in a CBC way.

Here's the link:

Thanks to KGNU, and George Outzel (BCNA webmaster) for providing the
audio!

Enjoy,

[cobirds] Red-shoulder Hawk Weld Cty

2010-01-09 Thread Todd Deininger
I refound the RSHA on the Poudre Trail around 9:15 this morning. It was north
of the trail in a tree out in field. Thanks to all the posted photos I was
able to id the hawk. I later tried to lead others to view the bird, but it had
moved on.

[cobirds] Nunn Guy Bird Trip: Weld Raptor Search Results (Red-shouldered!)

2010-01-09 Thread The Nunn Guy
Fabulous Weld County raptor day! Blue sky, 33 degrees, 17 birders,
gracious Nunn Cafe hosts and a new Colorado resident on her first
Colorado birding outing-we did not disappoint.

Good omen at start of day--Ferruginous Hawk on grain silo across from
Nunn Cafe--it only gets better from here.

Golden Eagle - 6
Prairie Falcon - 5
American Kestrel - 14
Rough-legged Hawk - 8
Ferruginous Hawk - 12(!)
Red-tailed Hawk - 18
Unidentified buteo - 2\Bald Eagle - 2
Northern Harrier - 2

Crowning the day for all of us-Red-shouldered Hawk at 2:30PM. We
parked in Poudre River Trail parking lot on north; walked no more than
half-mile east. The trail goes east; turns south then bends east
again-at this bend is where a trail walker mentioned hearing a hawk-
like cry. We found the bird across the Poudre River perched on limb
10 o'clock in the three Cottonwoods closest to river on south bank.
It sat for at least 10 minutes-then dove to ground; not sure if he got
his prey and flew low west along river and perched low could no longer
see the hawk.

Crowning day for myself was at home at WCR 33/100 dog colony not one,
not two ,not three, not four, not five but SIX Ferruginous Hawks
fighting over fresh Prairire Dog kill-AWESOME. Got pix of four them
together posting soon.

All in all a fab day for Weld County birders

Thanks

[cobirds] Winter Wren at Fountain Creek Park, El Paso County

2010-01-09 Thread KENNETH PALS

Cobirders,

A Winter Wren, reported by Bill Maynard about a week ago, was observed by
several people today at Fountain Creek Regional Park south of Colorado Springs.
Aaron Driscoll was the first to see the wren on the north side of the gazebo
at North Rice's Pond. A few minutes later he connected with me, and we refound
the bird in the same location. Leslie Holzman and Rise Foster-Bruder also had
brief glimpses of the bird.

I found the bird again at around 3:30 p.m. with Kaye Lafreniere. I had a great
look at the bird this time and we heard it's call several times. It was found
in what is known by some as area 2 in the park, near the Trail Marker #18 first
in the dead Crack Willow tree on the east side of the regional trail, it flew
across the trail to another willow and dead branches, then proceeded to the
sewage treatment outflow area.

Thanks, Bill, for your tips on finding this new county bird for all of us.
