[cobirds] Sage Sparrow--Chatfield

2010-03-20 Thread markchavez
This beautiful and snowy morning, I arrived at the Chatfield Swim Beach to find
Glen Walbek and Loch Kilpatrick, who had just seen the Sage Sparrow. The bird
was relocated again, and we got great looks at this elusive bird. We would
watch him for a short period before he would disappear in the hoards of Juncos.
Distant shots can be seen in the uncommon and rare gallery below:

[cobirds] Golden-crowned Sparrow - Red Rocks

2010-03-20 Thread mike
After shoveling out from under a foot of snow, I took a drive to Red
Rocks near Morrison and then Bear Creek Lake Park. I scattered some
seed in the garden area to the west of the Red Rocks Trading Post.
Within 10 minutes the Golden-crowned Sparrow (looking more golden on
the crown) appeared along with the regulars - Western Scrub-Jay, Black-
capped Chickadee, Spotted Towhee, Song Sparrow, House Finch, and a
variety of Juncos.

[cobirds] A Drama of Three Birds...

2010-03-20 Thread mike
Around noon as I was driving the roads in Bear Creek Lake Park, I
witnessed a drama involving a Black-billed Magpie, Cooper's Hawk, and
a Red-tailed Hawk.

Just ahead of me I saw a bird knock down a Magpie and land in the
middle of the road. It turned out to be a Cooper's Hawk on top of a
struggling Magpie. I watched for several minutes as the Cooper's held
down the struggling Magpie, while 10-12 Black-billed Magpies landed in
the tree above the two combatants, scolding, squacking, and creating
quite a ruckus. All of the magpies stayed in the tree 10 -15 feet
above the fray while voicing their displeasure. Then, all of a
sudden, the Cooper's loosened it's grip on the Black-billed Magpie,
which wobbled a few feet away. I fully expected the Cooper's to renew
it's attack on the magpie, but instead it flew off to the south, the
disheveled magpie wobbled up into the nearest tree, and the flock of
cackling magpies took off. BANG ... like a stealth bomber a Red-
tailed Hawk hit the magpie, turned sharply, landed on a limb in the
tree with the poor magpie in it's talons. I imagined the Red-tail
getting a better grip on the magpie the short time it was perched.
The Red-tail then took off with the magpie in tow and uttered a
typical Red-tail scream (a victory scream???) as it departed. Later
on I saw two Red-tails circling and one of the hawks (male???) still
had the magpie grasped in it's talons. Something special to witness!

[cobirds] Golden-crowned Sparrow at Tunnel Drive

2010-03-20 Thread millerrichj
Colorado's other Golden-crowned Sparrow continues its winter sojourn at
Tunnel Drive in Canon City. This morning it was on the ground with several
White-crowned Sparrows next to the metal gate at the end of Tunnel Drive.
This is its fourth winter at Tunnel Dr. Also seen in the area were two
Rufous-crowned Sparrows and a imm. Bald Eagle.

This afternoon I saw two FOY Tree Swallows flying along the Arkansas
River. Appropriate for the first day of spring!

[cobirds] Birding Weld County

2010-03-20 Thread Norma Erickson
The monthly Greeley Birders drove to Crow Valley Recreation area today and saw
many hawks. The sky was blue and hawks so visiable. Many Ferrugenous,
Red-tailed, one Rough-legged, many Harriars, a Prairie Merlin and a some of
usuals. We did find a new restaurant has opened in the building on the north
side of HWY 392 just before the turn to the campground. This should help a lot
of us hungry birders. It is clean, nicely redecorated, reasonably priced and
the hamburgers were good and thick. It is open from 11:00 to 2:00 PM Monday
thru Saturdays.

[cobirds] Dinosaur Ridge Hawk Watch - 3/20/10

2010-03-20 Thread rostrhamus
Roger Rouch and I did our second rotation for the RMBO volunteer crew
at the snow covered Dinosaur Ridge Hawk Watch today 3/20. Dave
Hinrichs joined in the morning and was rewarded by eye-level looks at
Peregrine Falcon, Ferruginous Hawk, and American Kestrel. The Juniper
Titmouse sang for several minutes atop a pine at the site. Mountain
Bluebirds were common along the ridge. The snow helped us pick-up
raptors flying against a foothills backdrop. A scope is very useful
for raptor watching.

We ended up seeing six species of migrant raptors totaling 11
individuals, including 4 Bald and 1 Golden Eagle. Plus 2 additional
local species.

A herd of 80 elk rested at the summit of Mattews/Winters Park nearly
all day.

Good Birding,

Scott Severs
