[cobirds] Ospreys / Larimer County

2010-04-16 Thread Stacy Taeuber
My second ever post! Apologies if this is common knowledge/old news,
having moved here recently I'm not sure On Sunday I had what I
thought were 3 osprey in a row fly over the road as I was driving
east from La Porte on 287B. When I pulled over and turned around,
there were 2 osprey sitting on the platform on an old utility pole in
the field off of N. Taft Hill Rd and 287B (right where 287/14 veer
north). As I watched, one osprey mounted the other and then after
sitting for a moment took off. It must be spring -- every time I turn
around I'm seeing birds mating! Looks like a nest platform, which is
why I figure maybe this is common knowledge

[cobirds] early migrants, dixon res., fort collins

2010-04-16 Thread arvind panjabi
A quick stop at Dixon Reservoir this morning produced a few early migrants and
some other interesting birds.

Greater Scaup
Ring-necked Duck
Mallard
Killdeer
American Kestrel
Turkey Vulture
Mourning Dove
Northern Flicker
Downy Woodpecker
Rock Wren
Canyon Wren
House Wren
Red-breasted Nuthatch
White-breasted Nuthatch
Black-capped Chickadee
European Starling
American Robin
Audubon's Warbler
Myrtle Warbler
Song Sparrow
Western Meadowlark
Lesser Goldfinch
American Goldfinch
House Finch

At my home near Horsetooth Mountain, I had a migrating Brown Creeper stop in my
yard briefly on wednesday Apr 14. Mtn Bluebirds are inspecting nest boxes and
singing from my roof daily, and a Red-naped Sapsucker stopped in briefly early
last week. Until a few days ago, Cassin's Finches and Mountain Chickadee were
regular, but they seem to have moved on now.

Cheers,

2010-04-16 Thread The Nunn Guy
I did my best to imitate what I heard at Dixon Reservoir. Can anyone
ID it-or suggest birds to listen to on my iPod?

[cobirds] Broomfield Rambles

2010-04-16 Thread Lauren Burke

I've been intending to post..This morning in my very suburban Broomfield yard I
looked out the window and had a male Mallard (oh, wait-is it more properly
drake?). I was surprised. He was enjoying spilled seed under one of my
platform feeders..even made his way into my wee little bird pond. There was
just enough room in the deep end for him. He quacked at me as I came out to
go to work..but then one of my dogs chased him off. He was seen again in my
driveway later in the morning-I'm hoping he comes back!

I've also had my fos Brown-headed Cowbird a couple of days ago. I know most
people despise them-but they are beautiful and I love their liquid/electronic
vocalizations.

We have crows nesting in the evergreen tree outside my office window, a family
group that's been around since last season. We also put up a flicker box on
the community clubhouse as there was a pair trying to nest in the walls of the
building. We see this pair and Starlings in and out of the box-I hope the
Flickers succeed! We also had a Prairie Falcon fly by our office on Wednesday,
spotted by my boss Kim. I've almost got her completely hooked!

I'm really enjoying these springtime locals. Colorado is an amazing place to
live!

[cobirds] Bird Call ID Update/Dixon Reservoir

2010-04-16 Thread The Nunn Guy
I used http://identify.whatbird.com/mwg/_/0/attrs.aspx (visual/audio
cues search) to try and narrow down choices ... to no avail. They now
have two song/call options to help reduce number of possibilities.

Thanks to all that chimed in with possibilities-guess I'll chalk it up
as a miss (so I can get some sleep).

Thanks

[cobirds] Yellow-crowned Night Heron [El Paso County] Marbled Godwits [Pueblo County]

2010-04-16 Thread Bryan Patrick
Hello CO-Birders,

Not to beat the dead horse, I also refound the the Yellow-crowned
Night Heron this afternoon at Hansen Nature Center (south of Fountain
Creek Nature Center) as posted by Kara Lewantowicz this morning. This
bird is extremely cooperative and photogenic. I posted one of my
shots on the ABA Photo Gallery at:
http://gallery.aba.org/displayimage.php?pos=-1204

Also, the 6 Marbled Godwits (hanging with the White-faced Ibis) were
still at the 'shorebird area' at Pueblo SWA as posted by Brandon
Percival. I also posted a photo of one of these birds at:
http://gallery.aba.org/displayimage.php?pos=-1206

Thanks to Brandon and Kara.

Good Birding,
