[cobirds] Green Herons -- Larimer County 6/14

2010-06-15 Thread Brandon K. Percival
Hi all,

There were two Green Herons yesterday evening at Running Deer Nature Area in
Fort Collins.  The Least Bittern didn't appear.

Thanks to everyone who helped me and others seen the Black-billed Cuckoo
yesterday at Norma's Grove in Weld County.  The cuckoo was at one point sitting
on a log, where I was able to get a few photos.  Great bird for sure, and only
2nd one in Colorado, the other one was back in the 1990s at Tamarack Ranch.

Birding around Weld County yesterday also produced:  Mountain Plovers, McCown's
Longspurs, a Ferruginous Hawk, singing Grasshopper and Cassin's Sparrows, and
lots of Lark Buntings.  Chestnut-collared Longspurs were not to be found, if
anyone has a for sure spot for one of them, please let me know.

Good birding,

Brandon Percival
Pueblo West, CO

[cobirds] Black-billed Cuckoo and road closures

2010-06-15 Thread Glenn Walbek
Folks,

Steve Stachowiak reports the Black-billed Cuckoo continues at Norma's Grove.
This morning it was seen in the trees along Rd 100. Be advised, many of the
roads in and around the Platte River north of Kersey are closed apparently due
to recent flooding. If you are heading up there from the south, save some time
and go Hwy 85 or I-25 to Hwy 14.

[cobirds] Common Black-Hawk - Delta County, June 15th

2010-06-15 Thread Jason Beason
About one hours ago I saw a Common Black-Hawk soaring over Hotchkiss (Delta
County). This is almost exactly one year from the date (June 12th last
year) I saw this species souring in about the same location in 2009. I also
saw one perched near where I was today on July 29th, 2009. Could this
species be breeding near Hotchkiss?!?

[cobirds] Admin Message/Please Read

2010-06-15 Thread Rachel Hopper
Just as a reminder, please include the county name in the subject of your
post and try to give some idea of location and directions when naming a
specific area such as Running Deer. The County Birding Website can always
be used for links to directions and maps:
http://www.coloradocountybirding.com/

We have well over 750 members and COBirds is read world-wide. Specific
information is always helpful and required as part of our posting guidelines
(which can be read here: http://www.cfo-link.org/birding/COBirds_rules.php).

Here is a link to a good map of the natural areas in Ft. Collins:

Thanks.

[cobirds] Atlas blockbuster. Lincoln, Washington, Yuma, Cheyenne, Kit Carson counties

2010-06-15 Thread Hugh and Urling Kingery
On our Atlas blockbuster last weekend, 14 field workers in four
parties worked in 16 blocks. Plains blocks in the Arriba/Burlington area
usually have 20-30 species, but each one provided its own special reward.
Species detected included:

Dickcissel - in 6 blocks; again this year, good numbers have arrived on the
prairie.

Lark Buntings - dozens per block, performing their spectacular song feats

Grasshopper Sparrow - in almost every block

McCown's Longspur - only one block, but a colony of 8-10 larking males (wow!)

Cassin's Sparrow - not many, not much suitable habitat

Mountain Plover - only one bird

Burrowing Owl - 4 blocks

Blue Grosbeak - 2 blocks

Barn Owl - 2 blocks.

On Friday Urling and I stumbled onto a section of Yellow Sweet
Clover, interspersed with 150 bales of last year's clover-hay. Dozens of birds,
using the bales for perches, sang vigorously: territorial Dickcissels, Horned
Larks, Grasshopper Sparrows, Lark Buntings, meadowlarks, and Red-winged
Blackbirds. Also on hay bales, cowbirds. Every other hay bale seemed to have a
bird on it. *

On Saturday our party of six stopped at a decadent alfalfa field
(half alfalfa and half some other plant that we can't identify) and marveled at
dozens of larking Lark Buntings plus 3-4 Dickcissels. Spectacular. Breathtaking.

Sunday, in off-and-on misting rain, we worked the Bonny Res. N.
block. Singing Orchard Orioles must have numbered 25-30. Five-six noisy
Yellow-billed Cuckoos. Eight Red-headed Woodpeckers. A pair of Blue Grosbeaks.
A colony of five Dickcissels. A dozen or so Warbling Vireos, presumably the
eastern race, and two pairs of White-breasted Nuthatches, also eastern. We saw
(too briefly) one Northern Cardinal and one (I think) Great Crested Flycatcher
(in the same place that I saw one in Atlas I).

Francis Commercon described the four blocks that he and his mother,
Joyce, sampled:

On Friday night we were out looking for Nighthawks, but we were
running from two massive thunderstorms as well. The lightning was horrifying,
and Severe weather and Tornado warnings on the radio made us fear for our tiny
tent back at the campground. Once we got lost near our Vona block, and saw a
group of tornado chasers, who had discovered a funnel cloud heading our way!

Despite the weather, the next day yielded Ring-necked Pheasants, a
Greater Prairie-Chicken and her fledglings, Northern Bobwhite, Indigo Bunting,
and Orchard Oriole, all of which were life birds to me. In my Stratton Block we
discovered a Black Tern.

If you want to find some of the Bonny birds, I will gladly provide
directions, provided that you promise to share your observations in order to
supplement the Atlas data that we have so far.

Hugh Kingery

PS - as some of you know, I keep a very important List of
Birds-Seen-on-Haystacks. Now in its 41st year, my list has 47 species on it,
with the addition of three species on Saturday.

[cobirds] Ptarmingan, American Pipit, American Dipper

2010-06-15 Thread Ronald Green
A recent trip to Mt Evans netted some shots of a Ptarmigan. There was a pair
together. I was not able to capture any images of the second one. I found
them just a the tree line ends by the Nature Center/bathrooms. Additionally,
I finally captured some images of a pair of Dippers that were at the
waterfalls off 40 just short after you enter Berthod Pass. I have been
wanting to get some images since moving here 2-1/2 years ago but just never
came across any. As a photographer friend of mine out of Minnesota said,
they are a bird that is a blast to watch as it dives in and out of the
water, even rapidly moving water. He was right! Anyway, I hope that you
enjoy the images.

[cobirds] Doves and Cowbirds at my feeder.

2010-06-15 Thread Bob Spencer
Hi Cobirds My birding is confined mostly to home. Yesterday late
there was both an Eurasian Dove and
a Mourning Dove feeding on my cable drum feeder. Four Brown-headed
Cowbirds joined them and
soon a female Cowbird showed up to eat seeds. An interesting
combination.
